I agree with henrique, I prefer Novaes's Bercuese above the others I've heard (her late recording). Love all the unique voices here tho including the amazing Gieseking.
thank you, i was just mentioning to another a poster I would like to hear Gieseking's interpretation of this wonderful piece and here you have it! What a pianist he was. thanks again.
You can compare all records of Berceuse, however Guiomar Novaes is the best, touchant. Nobody plays this music like her. Nor Rubinstein,Paderewsky, CortotmHoffman
Overall impression is very good: among the best performances. However, his rubato is not evenly applied. Rubato is found in the wind, in the waves, in all Nature: always rising and subsiding rhythmically.
Minha música predileta de Chopin. Esta música, eu já houvia aos 5 anos com minha avó. Até hoje tenho o disco de vinil em 78 RPM. Excelente Video. Parabéns. The best!!!
I have his original album of the Suite Bergamasque - Angel, and I once had it on 78's..it is said he played it the way Debussy wanted it played. I believe it...it is said Debussy heard Gieseking play...could be...
Thanks so much for posting this video! My father was a pianist and I remember hearing the name, Walter Gieseking. Now I know why. His interpretations are emotionally powerful. Each note is played so crisply. Thanks again!
Gieseking was very great. At Channel berceuse75007, hear this being played on Chopin's own Pleyel pianino, his little piano in the hallway at Valdemossa on Mallorca; an instrument with unique sound & echoe.
He was the finest interpreter of Debussy and Ravel, and equal to the task whether on Beethoven,Chopin or almost any other composer. He was one of,if not the most sought after accompanists for all or most of the great soloists.Walter was a true shining star!
TOO SLOW , the line is lost.

This version is the best I think, Gieseking has a softer touch which makes the sounds incredible...

True he had a distinctive unmatched tone pallete... but don't you think he had rather "cringe" worthy performances in say his Rach 3?
prismsmiles 3 years ago
prismsmiles-He was certainly not Horowitz nor Argerich in his Rach 3 ,but neither were they he- in their Debussy etc. Best wishes

His treatment of the left hand is interesting. The playing is gorgeous.
