well my experience of police as i know some of these idiots personally and do call them idiots dictates to me that they are only happy when either arresting somebody or issuing a fine . if it wos upto a lot of this lot their would be no civilian motorbikes on the road .well let me tell you this theirs a lot more than police with an afdvanced motorist badge and bike also aswell as motocross experience 99.9 percent of these guys need to take a reality check .
and by the way pass your test before you start to slate road users and then . view these idiots in the same light when you get pulled for doing 4 mph over the limit as my friend did . look at the news and whats going on in the world
you say your friend was pulled over for going 4 over the limit seeing as you have a video called speed camera on fire on your favorites im guessing it was more like 40.
Ive seen my share of bad driving such as people going 70 on single lane roads the limit is 60 and seen a van driver undertake through 3 lanes of traffic on the M40 to get to the fast lane.
ah clever are we and the answer to your question is . no im not dont class me as white van man and until you pass your test dont even try to criticise my driving dont label me . i see a lot of bad driving myself . on civilians and police and you think you have seen it all . no you havent try a stint on a recovery vehicle scraping bikes cars and trucks and their users of the roads all speed cameras are . are just a way of making money a speeding tax
and until you have driven and rode some machines dont even try to label me as a bad driver rider racing is for the racetrack and you will find when you do pass your test and get to drive something biger than a 1000cc you will find it aint easy to keep them under 30 mph shit happens nobody is perfect as you will find out
again i was presuming youre the average driver and most of them drive 70 on a 60 road they also dont signal most of the time making it a pain when youre behind them and you have no advanced warning of what they are going to do.
of people a bit of advice for you . even when you passed ure test dont assume all i safe and straight forward read the road look at what over road users are doing
Thats what im taught as a learner to read the road ahead and try and anticipate what other drivers are going to do its just harder if someone doesnt do what you expect. my frustration is that some people seem to completely ignore things like road signs and speed limits for example in a car park theres a sign saying exit left only but people still turn right. wheras im taught to read them and act upon them.
well i just hate how people are so ignorant and think they can do what they want but you cant if a sign tells you to do something you do it because normally its for your's and other road users safety, not to inconvenience you. i just hate bad and reckless drivers because they cause so many avoidable accidents.
i hate the way people think that because i am a learner im a bad driver far from it i've been taught how to drive safely and responsibly. i dont remember saying anything bout seeing everything i simply said i have seen my share of bad driving and im sure i will see alot more. true there's a way of making money out of it but if a speed camera makes people slow down then the little kid running out stands a better chance.
im sorry ive thought about what i put here and i feel i must admit i dont even drive never have im not allowed to have a licence as i have alzheimers sorry to mislead anyone
police think they are above the law i dont like two faced twats that train you one day and take you license away the next so lets all stand together and get freedom back in this country
A LIFESAVER is a done when pulling away from stationery never when moving.
What should be done is a quick glance to whichever side is needed. It should not involve you turning your head too far. As a class 1 rider it is taught by police to be done when performing a turn left or right at a junction or any other manoeuvre at less then 40 MPH. Above 40 MPH mirror checks only should be used.
I agree with the statements about lifesavers. I often feel when riding there is no need for some lifesavers.
Also, can you please tell me where this clip is taken from? I seem to remember a program where they were training police bikers in Strathclyde (may have been STV?) but cannot find reference to it anywhere.
Just found this video. A good example of Advanced riding on not too challenging roads. Must take issue with all of you taking about lifesavers. It would be more suitable to call them shoulder checks. There is a difference. Have you tried a lifesaver at high speed? Good descussion though.
bike at 50 Mph your blackbird at 100mph (closing speed of 50mph or approx 73 feet per second X 8 seconds - approx 200yards if your not looking that far back every 8 seconds or so forget it
Just do a Training needs analysis what causes most collisons? answer the rider not looking far enough AHEAD
Thanks, chaps. Great video - I'm 36, and have never driven a car. It's all been Lambrettas, and big bikes. So my transport is big bikes. Excellent video, this. I suppose the message is, respect the machine, always look at the driving movements of others, always be cynical about other road users. I know too many facts about reckless bikers. Believe me, their bodies literally disentegrate on impact. So mates, take it easy out there.

This video lacks lifesavers!!!! Commentary, positioning, forward observation and planning are all very commendable. If the overtake is on, it's simple..... left n right mirrors, signal and then RIGHT LIFESAVER!!!! No arguement. No debate. At speed or bimbling along, a lifesaver is necessary. C'mon guys. Sort it out
I agree life savers are very important especialy in built up areas, its saved me from goin under cars a couple of times.
Also i think that if we ourselves dont do lifesavers then hpw can we moan when car drivers don't.
However i also agree that sometimes they are less needed then others. For example, wot type of dick-head is goin to over take a police motorcycle with its blues and twos on, if they did theyre asking for trouble arent they?
Nice video boys, Nice to see such a heated debate between the both of you. Personal I believe a lifesaver check is very important, but not always required. I have been caught off guard and if it wasn't for my lifesaver I would have been road kill.
No matter what either of you think, the bottom line is a lifersaver works, and should be a used whenever possible.
I spent the day with a police instructor, it should be compulsory. Taught me to be smooth and fast, loved it. Getting chased around Sussex by a cop on a Ducati, great.
bloody hell guys calm down!!! its not a competition!! im sure your boyh very safe riders but it looks like you let the red mist come down a bit to easy and thats a killer on the road lol
sorry mate your so wrong just look at the video at these instructors that you say are teaching life savers there is not one. Of course safety is important and your showing your stupidty in suggesting anyone things different as I said before this ends here I have far better things to do.
God your grammar is terrible. Hey, i posted a comment here first...you are the one who started replying with outlandish statments. Why did you bother???? You can on here all full of your own self importance with your degreee etc....and proceeded to make a show of your self with comments about the word consider and how lifesavers show little. If you want to run away crying do.
I know there are no lifesavers on the video..that was what my very first comment questioned!!!!!! you a bit forgetfull???
If you dont like replies keep you statments to yourself in the first place from now on. Mr self denoted 'advanced biker'...... Self praise is no praise....
calm down. both of you make good points. there ARE times when a lifesaver DOES save a life, there ARE times when its unnecessary. knowing the difference aids progress. ive had times when a lifesaver DID show me a vehicle in my blind spot, at other times its safer to look forward. as a rule i do them though
Mr Andy O'brien. I take exemption to your comments! I have not suggested safety checks should not be done and further more I am not advocating reduced safety, In fact the opposite. Sorry but you are not operating at my level and I can't hold a discussion with you. If anyone else wants to take up the mantle, I am prepared to discuss at an adult level
God your arrogant. Can you not sustain some critisism. your keep refering to the book ( which is good ) but im refering to the living system taught to police riders by police instructors, by ROSPA instructors to trainees etc, and the lifesaver is always, always, always used. 'Consider' is not the most important word of the system.....SAFETY is. That is the entire purpose of the system, SAFE progress as well as being smooth, progressive, methodical etc.
I think you have not realised that the most important word in the system is CONSIDER and if you think this system is taught over Europe again sorry wrong. Have a look at the Hermes European commission driver training project and please don't be puerile by suggesting that I allege something, if you have to lower yourself to that I am sorry but this discussion ends here.
You are completely wrong....SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY is the most important word in the system, not 'consider'. That was some ridiculious statement.
The system actually suggests that you should use your judgement when to use a lifesaver even the book does not demand it at all times and even suggests during high speed overtaking, when your certain whats happening behind its often safer to keep your eyes on what is happening ahead. Page 31 in case you want to check. I think you have not realised that the most important word in the system is CONSIDER and if you think this system is taught over Europe again sorry wrong
At 1:08 when he does the overtake how come he only looks in his mirrors not a lifesaver over his right shoulder? , i thought the idea was to do a life saver for the blind spot in your mirrors like if another motorcycle was overtaking this guy as he overtakes.
a life saver is a look behind into an area that cannot be readily covered by a mirror check. Next time you ride look and see how big your blindspot actually is. This rider has checked his mirror probably every 8 seconds what could be there ???
in 8 seconds??? Maybe a Blackbird, R6, even a Ferrari - anything going a bit quicker than you, especially if you're caught up behind a vehicle that's hindering your 'progress'. I really can't see why you wouldn't do a life-saver, which, as I'm sure you'd agree, is only looking in your blindspot, and not a full 180 degrees behind you.
You implied 8 seconds was sufficient in your previous post - perhaps you are now suggesting that's not frequent enough, I'm not sure. Either way, I really don't see the disadvantage - if you're worried about riding forwards into the car in the split second a lifesaver takes, you're travelling too close.
in MOST cases the lifesaver can be engineered out with adequate mirror checks. However if you feel that you need them you MUST do them. the disadvantage is that your taking your eyes off the developing hazards in front. its not an issue of being too close its where the event or events are taking place and that could be over a mile ahead of the car your planning to overtake. All I would question is what do you really see when you do a lifesaver?
that you could not see in your mirror)again if you really think you need it do it! as this rider clearly shows in most cases there is no need for a lifesaver
remember in motorycling there should be few rules but many considerations
ERRRRRRRRR HOW ABOUT YOUR BLIND SPOT!?! No matter how good your mirrors are or where they are positioned you will always have a blind spot....its sumtimes shocking wot can hide in them aswell.
Yes and no, thats what the DSA will always tell you, and in town thats true. if like me thought you bairly ever go into towns at low speeds (i do alot of fast contry road riding) and your checking your mirrors enough, then you constantly have a mental image of what should be behind you and around you, so you can just CHECK your mirrors, thus giving you more time and sight to consentrate on the twat who cant see a big white bike with lights and high vis coming towards him
yes i agree however.. there is on twisty roads the occasional other bike rider that can catch u up and sometimes isnt wise enough to take into account tht u may nt have seen him. for example two weeks back me and a friend were riding along a fast twisty backroad and when we did the last mirror check it was all clear.
next thing i know a gsxr thou passes me on the right.....which suprised me but it was perfectly safe and legal so no worries.... he then came up behind my mate infront who was using the outta edge of the road to line up for a bend
the gsxr rider then decided to go on his inside (right in his blind spot)both riders then collided and this all being because a dick head had been in the blind spot. unfortunately we cant just say we get dickheads tht sit in the blind spot in towns, their everywhere.
well ok bud, take the risk. were wait to see you go under or over your vehicle of choice. you must remember there are dickheads out there n every bit of protection helps n lifesavers give u that lil bit more reassurance for nearly no effort.
well done matie you have been well chipped by the DSA nerd machine you keep believing in this blindspot one day you might just find exactly how small it really is, but until then you look behind and take your eyes off whats coming towards you at a great rate of knots, you must be safer
The blind spot is there. I once nearly hit a scooter driver when I was changing lanes because I only looked in my mirror and slightly sideways. A little later the same thing happened, only that time it was a biker. It isn't nearly as all the road-safety people say it is, but it's big enough to fit a motorcycle in. And besides, you usually are going pretty slow when you look back because you normally only have to in a crowded town.
thats exactly how i feel advancedbiker1, i would much rather be looking at where i am going, than where i have come from, it honestly makes me feel unsafe, looking over my shoulder being the last thing i am supposed to do before pulling out onto a new road. Stupid DSA, have to jump through their hoops to pass the test.
did it for twenty years and got to instructor since then researched American and other methods of training whilst I did my degree did enough high speed escorts and training others. all I will say is what do you actually see when you do a lifesaver and could you have engineered the need for it out by positioning Didactic training must change to cognitive consideration.
i suggest you research the history of the life saver might surprise you>
If u think safety checks such as lifesaver are worthless fine but dont try and convince the rest of use we are wrong. Ill stick to riding how i was shown by exceptional police instructors. ill stick to the lifesaver and let you go take chances that ur blind spot is too small and that nothing will be there.. it called a blind spot for a reason!! you go ahead advocating reduced safety.
mmmm..i actually dont believe ya. So you know better than the system we have utillised for decades, i doubt it. Your 'degree' can't replace the years of experience professionals have ammased riding. The lifesaver is a key part of the system at a number of points, or maybe all my colleagues, instructors and police riders all over europe are fools. As for you 'allegedly' doing multi bike escorts with no lifesaver...you'd be a liability, a weak link.
You don't have to believe me that am your choice! If you think that "the system" is the be all and end all, you are so sadly mistaken if you need the evidence I can produce it. As an example what does it say about countersteering? So you have your thoughts I have mine. Just ask yourself what you see in that lifesaver and if you think you can see more than the mirror then carry on, just don't run into the car in front when looking backwards
I once checked my mirror before moving past one of a number of vehicles myself and 8 other police riders were escorting. I checked my mirror and the area it covered was clear, i did my lifesaver and one of my colleagues was passing through the area i checked at speed to take control of an approaching junction...mirror check only...not good enough. its my experience that has taught me the value of the lifesaver.
Nice observant riding but minimal hazards , 19+ years of couriering has implanted checking driver head movements and any alteration in front wheel direction as extra pointers to the path of vehicles (dont trust indicators).Allways keep headlights on , at least 1 finger on front brake permanantly and foot hovering on back brake on approach to every potential hazards.
Every time you pull off the kerb , change lane or generally sence something on your side. When moving you should be aware of all traffic infront and behind of you at all times so if you use your mirrors correctly the glance (while allready moving) should never reveal any surprises.
the life saver is out dated with the use of full face helemt and mirrors change the name to a commitment check and check any area the mirror can not see before committing
HA.....always suspicious about someone who denotes themselves an 'advance biker'. Well in my police force we still call them lifesavers. Now are you a police rider too or am i wasting my time talking to some chap with 5 or 10 hours 'advanced' training done. Try a high speed convoy escort with several other bikes and do it without lifesavers......you wouldn't have a chance.
Got some tips for free just watching this vid!
"...but I'll check these junctions out on my approach, not on my arrival..."
Also, just watch how many times he checks his mirrors.
It's art in motion.

and until you have driven and rode some machines dont even try to label me as a bad driver rider racing is for the racetrack and you will find when you do pass your test and get to drive something biger than a 1000cc you will find it aint easy to keep them under 30 mph shit happens nobody is perfect as you will find out
evilbreebles 2 years ago
again i was presuming youre the average driver and most of them drive 70 on a 60 road they also dont signal most of the time making it a pain when youre behind them and you have no advanced warning of what they are going to do.
MarkWilliams212 2 years ago
well rise above it and dont be so judgemental
of people a bit of advice for you . even when you passed ure test dont assume all i safe and straight forward read the road look at what over road users are doing
evilbreebles 2 years ago
Thats what im taught as a learner to read the road ahead and try and anticipate what other drivers are going to do its just harder if someone doesnt do what you expect. my frustration is that some people seem to completely ignore things like road signs and speed limits for example in a car park theres a sign saying exit left only but people still turn right. wheras im taught to read them and act upon them.
MarkWilliams212 2 years ago
let em get on with it ignore it just go about your business
evilbreebles 2 years ago
well i just hate how people are so ignorant and think they can do what they want but you cant if a sign tells you to do something you do it because normally its for your's and other road users safety, not to inconvenience you. i just hate bad and reckless drivers because they cause so many avoidable accidents.
MarkWilliams212 2 years ago
i was simply presuming you're the average driver.
i hate the way people think that because i am a learner im a bad driver far from it i've been taught how to drive safely and responsibly. i dont remember saying anything bout seeing everything i simply said i have seen my share of bad driving and im sure i will see alot more. true there's a way of making money out of it but if a speed camera makes people slow down then the little kid running out stands a better chance.

Guys can I just clear something up here
A LIFESAVER is a done when pulling away from stationery never when moving.
What should be done is a quick glance to whichever side is needed. It should not involve you turning your head too far. As a class 1 rider it is taught by police to be done when performing a turn left or right at a junction or any other manoeuvre at less then 40 MPH. Above 40 MPH mirror checks only should be used.
So please can we now stop calling them LIFESAVERS
MRUMedic 3 years ago
I agree with the statements about lifesavers. I often feel when riding there is no need for some lifesavers.
Also, can you please tell me where this clip is taken from? I seem to remember a program where they were training police bikers in Strathclyde (may have been STV?) but cannot find reference to it anywhere.

ever tried a life saver at an indicated 186 ? you would never get your head facing forward after it !

I speak reasonable English - but I had no fucking idea what the bloke was rabbiting on about when he was overtaking the car.
German would have been more helpful than that.

C'mon guys. Sort it out
ciarzo69 4 years ago 2
I agree life savers are very important especialy in built up areas, its saved me from goin under cars a couple of times.
Also i think that if we ourselves dont do lifesavers then hpw can we moan when car drivers don't.
However i also agree that sometimes they are less needed then others. For example, wot type of dick-head is goin to over take a police motorcycle with its blues and twos on, if they did theyre asking for trouble arent they?
Great Vid
Jackassed1990 3 years ago
lifesaver not always appropiate just before committing to an overtake.theres a lot more to it than just a simple sequance of events as you suggest.

p.s. I live in Warrington cheshire, would either of you two know if there is any a course by the police in this area?

check with your local force. you can either ask at the police station , or with a DSA motorcycle school. Maybe a dealer will know.
vectorm1299 3 years ago
Nice video boys, Nice to see such a heated debate between the both of you. Personal I believe a lifesaver check is very important, but not always required. I have been caught off guard and if it wasn't for my lifesaver I would have been road kill.
No matter what either of you think, the bottom line is a lifersaver works, and should be a used whenever possible.
deanjfk 4 years ago
I spent the day with a police instructor, it should be compulsory. Taught me to be smooth and fast, loved it. Getting chased around Sussex by a cop on a Ducati, great.

sorry mate your so wrong just look at the video at these instructors that you say are teaching life savers there is not one. Of course safety is important and your showing your stupidty in suggesting anyone things different as I said before this ends here I have far better things to do.
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
God your grammar is terrible. Hey, i posted a comment here first...you are the one who started replying with outlandish statments. Why did you bother???? You can on here all full of your own self importance with your degreee etc....and proceeded to make a show of your self with comments about the word consider and how lifesavers show little. If you want to run away crying do.
andyobrien100 4 years ago
I know there are no lifesavers on the video..that was what my very first comment questioned!!!!!! you a bit forgetfull???
If you dont like replies keep you statments to yourself in the first place from now on. Mr self denoted 'advanced biker'...... Self praise is no praise....
andyobrien100 4 years ago
calm down. both of you make good points. there ARE times when a lifesaver DOES save a life, there ARE times when its unnecessary. knowing the difference aids progress. ive had times when a lifesaver DID show me a vehicle in my blind spot, at other times its safer to look forward. as a rule i do them though
thunderatedcatdavy 4 years ago
Mr Andy O'brien. I take exemption to your comments! I have not suggested safety checks should not be done and further more I am not advocating reduced safety, In fact the opposite. Sorry but you are not operating at my level and I can't hold a discussion with you. If anyone else wants to take up the mantle, I am prepared to discuss at an adult level
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
God your arrogant. Can you not sustain some critisism. your keep refering to the book ( which is good ) but im refering to the living system taught to police riders by police instructors, by ROSPA instructors to trainees etc, and the lifesaver is always, always, always used. 'Consider' is not the most important word of the system.....SAFETY is. That is the entire purpose of the system, SAFE progress as well as being smooth, progressive, methodical etc.
andyobrien100 4 years ago
I think you have not realised that the most important word in the system is CONSIDER and if you think this system is taught over Europe again sorry wrong. Have a look at the Hermes European commission driver training project and please don't be puerile by suggesting that I allege something, if you have to lower yourself to that I am sorry but this discussion ends here.
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
You are completely wrong....SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY is the most important word in the system, not 'consider'. That was some ridiculious statement.
andyobrien100 4 years ago
The system actually suggests that you should use your judgement when to use a lifesaver even the book does not demand it at all times and even suggests during high speed overtaking, when your certain whats happening behind its often safer to keep your eyes on what is happening ahead. Page 31 in case you want to check. I think you have not realised that the most important word in the system is CONSIDER and if you think this system is taught over Europe again sorry wrong
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
At 1:08 when he does the overtake how come he only looks in his mirrors not a lifesaver over his right shoulder? , i thought the idea was to do a life saver for the blind spot in your mirrors like if another motorcycle was overtaking this guy as he overtakes.
motorheaddude07 4 years ago
a life saver is a look behind into an area that cannot be readily covered by a mirror check. Next time you ride look and see how big your blindspot actually is. This rider has checked his mirror probably every 8 seconds what could be there ???
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
in 8 seconds??? Maybe a Blackbird, R6, even a Ferrari - anything going a bit quicker than you, especially if you're caught up behind a vehicle that's hindering your 'progress'. I really can't see why you wouldn't do a life-saver, which, as I'm sure you'd agree, is only looking in your blindspot, and not a full 180 degrees behind you.
StanDwellback1 3 years ago
if your not checking your mirror that often to see even your hyper speed ferrari coming up you are not making effective rear
advancedbiker1 3 years ago
You implied 8 seconds was sufficient in your previous post - perhaps you are now suggesting that's not frequent enough, I'm not sure. Either way, I really don't see the disadvantage - if you're worried about riding forwards into the car in the split second a lifesaver takes, you're travelling too close.
StanDwellback1 3 years ago
in MOST cases the lifesaver can be engineered out with adequate mirror checks. However if you feel that you need them you MUST do them. the disadvantage is that your taking your eyes off the developing hazards in front. its not an issue of being too close its where the event or events are taking place and that could be over a mile ahead of the car your planning to overtake. All I would question is what do you really see when you do a lifesaver?
advancedbiker1 3 years ago
True
Jackassed1990 3 years ago
that you could not see in your mirror)again if you really think you need it do it! as this rider clearly shows in most cases there is no need for a lifesaver
remember in motorycling there should be few rules but many considerations
advancedbiker1 3 years ago
ERRRRRRRRR HOW ABOUT YOUR BLIND SPOT!?! No matter how good your mirrors are or where they are positioned you will always have a blind spot....its sumtimes shocking wot can hide in them aswell.
Jackassed1990 3 years ago
Yes and no, thats what the DSA will always tell you, and in town thats true. if like me thought you bairly ever go into towns at low speeds (i do alot of fast contry road riding) and your checking your mirrors enough, then you constantly have a mental image of what should be behind you and around you, so you can just CHECK your mirrors, thus giving you more time and sight to consentrate on the twat who cant see a big white bike with lights and high vis coming towards him
raidafrica 3 years ago
yes i agree however.. there is on twisty roads the occasional other bike rider that can catch u up and sometimes isnt wise enough to take into account tht u may nt have seen him. for example two weeks back me and a friend were riding along a fast twisty backroad and when we did the last mirror check it was all clear.
Jackassed1990 3 years ago
next thing i know a gsxr thou passes me on the right.....which suprised me but it was perfectly safe and legal so no worries.... he then came up behind my mate infront who was using the outta edge of the road to line up for a bend
the gsxr rider then decided to go on his inside (right in his blind spot)both riders then collided and this all being because a dick head had been in the blind spot. unfortunately we cant just say we get dickheads tht sit in the blind spot in towns, their everywhere.
Jackassed1990 3 years ago
well ok bud, take the risk. were wait to see you go under or over your vehicle of choice. you must remember there are dickheads out there n every bit of protection helps n lifesavers give u that lil bit more reassurance for nearly no effort.
Jackassed1990 3 years ago
well done matie you have been well chipped by the DSA nerd machine you keep believing in this blindspot one day you might just find exactly how small it really is, but until then you look behind and take your eyes off whats coming towards you at a great rate of knots, you must be safer
advancedbiker1 3 years ago
The blind spot is there. I once nearly hit a scooter driver when I was changing lanes because I only looked in my mirror and slightly sideways. A little later the same thing happened, only that time it was a biker. It isn't nearly as all the road-safety people say it is, but it's big enough to fit a motorcycle in. And besides, you usually are going pretty slow when you look back because you normally only have to in a crowded town.
Shimrra1 3 years ago
thats exactly how i feel advancedbiker1, i would much rather be looking at where i am going, than where i have come from, it honestly makes me feel unsafe, looking over my shoulder being the last thing i am supposed to do before pulling out onto a new road. Stupid DSA, have to jump through their hoops to pass the test.
Barkingjohnboy 3 years ago
i stand by my first statement
Jackassed1990 3 years ago
did it for twenty years and got to instructor since then researched American and other methods of training whilst I did my degree did enough high speed escorts and training others. all I will say is what do you actually see when you do a lifesaver and could you have engineered the need for it out by positioning Didactic training must change to cognitive consideration.
i suggest you research the history of the life saver might surprise you>
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
If u think safety checks such as lifesaver are worthless fine but dont try and convince the rest of use we are wrong. Ill stick to riding how i was shown by exceptional police instructors. ill stick to the lifesaver and let you go take chances that ur blind spot is too small and that nothing will be there.. it called a blind spot for a reason!! you go ahead advocating reduced safety.
andyobrien100 4 years ago
mmmm..i actually dont believe ya. So you know better than the system we have utillised for decades, i doubt it. Your 'degree' can't replace the years of experience professionals have ammased riding. The lifesaver is a key part of the system at a number of points, or maybe all my colleagues, instructors and police riders all over europe are fools. As for you 'allegedly' doing multi bike escorts with no lifesaver...you'd be a liability, a weak link.
andyobrien100 4 years ago
You don't have to believe me that am your choice! If you think that "the system" is the be all and end all, you are so sadly mistaken if you need the evidence I can produce it. As an example what does it say about countersteering? So you have your thoughts I have mine. Just ask yourself what you see in that lifesaver and if you think you can see more than the mirror then carry on, just don't run into the car in front when looking backwards
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
I once checked my mirror before moving past one of a number of vehicles myself and 8 other police riders were escorting. I checked my mirror and the area it covered was clear, i did my lifesaver and one of my colleagues was passing through the area i checked at speed to take control of an approaching junction...mirror check only...not good enough. its my experience that has taught me the value of the lifesaver.
andyobrien100 4 years ago
Nice observant riding but minimal hazards , 19+ years of couriering has implanted checking driver head movements and any alteration in front wheel direction as extra pointers to the path of vehicles (dont trust indicators).Allways keep headlights on , at least 1 finger on front brake permanantly and foot hovering on back brake on approach to every potential hazards.
Upstairsatericz 4 years ago
Nicely Put. How often do u do head checks over your shoulder?
sashdo 3 years ago
Every time you pull off the kerb , change lane or generally sence something on your side. When moving you should be aware of all traffic infront and behind of you at all times so if you use your mirrors correctly the glance (while allready moving) should never reveal any surprises.
Upstairsatericz 3 years ago
There are no doubts that this is a great example of the use of the system of motorcycle control. but, i saw no lifesavers, i dont understand this.
andyobrien100 4 years ago
the life saver is out dated with the use of full face helemt and mirrors change the name to a commitment check and check any area the mirror can not see before committing
advancedbiker1 4 years ago
HA.....always suspicious about someone who denotes themselves an 'advance biker'. Well in my police force we still call them lifesavers. Now are you a police rider too or am i wasting my time talking to some chap with 5 or 10 hours 'advanced' training done. Try a high speed convoy escort with several other bikes and do it without lifesavers......you wouldn't have a chance.
