My Step-dad had this record when I was a young child--My Mom passed away in 1959 and I never was able to hear this song again as my step-dad sort of disappeared after that---but, low and behold--here it is--I always thought it was a funny song--but, then remember I was about 7 when I first heard it--not too PC. Anyway, glad to find it---
My Grandpa used to always sing this song! However, he got Alzheimer's disease (you cant remember anything) in 2001 and passed away last year. I have never been able to find this song because i never knew the name.
(If you're wondering why my username is joebacon, I am using my little brother's account. My name is Maddy)
I've known this song by performed by a different artist... I never knew it was written by H.C. ... I like this version better. nothing tops the original.
What a great song! I was listening to a classic radio station on iTunes and this came on. I loved it so much I Googled some of the words and found out what it was called and then found it here! The wonders of modern science.. :-) I love completely wrong, non politically-correct stuff like this.. I'm sure we are going backwards with all our stupid attempts to never call a spade a spade.. Damn! Can I say "spade" now? ;-)
in the late 70's a local band called Ukiah played this at Carlos O'Briens in Riverside, Ca and had a album with the song on the LP. I performed it in sign language back then as a encore to winning the talent night.
These lyrics are lulz. I am shocked he could get away with a song like this in 1940s. Imagine the protest today if a song about a fat girl came out now.
o_O Well then........ Hoagy and Fallout are genius in their own right, and I take it you've never played any of the Fallout games including the the third shown above. The concept art was neither created with Play-Doh nor Adobe Photoshop.
I have not heard this since my CD set "Doctor Demento's Mementos" vanished!
Song had been mentioned between 'Momma Whippoorwill' and 'Walter' via CB radio years ago.
It was not until I bought that CD set did I know what they were speaking about.
A cute song that I enjoy hearing!
Thanks for the upload.

I remember hearing this song on my parent's record player. It was a 78 RPM record and they used to play it a lot. Memories! Thanks for this.

Ya gotta love old fashioned songs! This one should probably be modernized, considering the rising obesity rates. :D

I am about the size he sings about and I think this is hysterical!
It is affectionate and not mean spirited or judgmental like so much modern talk about fat people is.

Lets give it up for fat girls.

@rebuildNOLA2008 My dad won a talent contest singing this, and added a few lines there
'He was exhausted - comin' 'round the other side
'He had a road-map! - comin' 'round the other side

I hope this is one of the songs in the Smithsonian Collection, and if it's not, it should be.

Wow, haven't heard this song since the early 50's! Yeah, our boyfriends used to sing it and we had a ball.
Now the song still puts a smile on my face!
Hoagy (the composer) is the one who gave us 'Stardust' and 'Ole Buttermilk Sky', don't you forget!
