@markbeatlesyeah I would say that they are still very much relevant. Arguably still the most relevant band ever??? There are a few others that might claim it, but my opinion is that Zep is right there among them.
@TheAxis456 He was, actually. George challenged him to right a ballad or a song on his own or whatever and the result turned out to be ... The Rain Song! The first few chords are actually from "Something".
For those who may wonder, this is based off White Summer/Black Mountain Side, which can be heard off their album "CODA." Great song, combines sheer energy with amazing elgance. Plays out like a touching novel, with it's high and low points, all leading up to a climax which leaves you stunned. Imperfect Perfection if you will.
@UlrichTriplets69 Coda? No, this was originally on the Yardbirds Little Games album from 1967. By the time of this performance on this show he combined it with Black Mountain Side from Zep's first album as he did for all their shows. It is also the last time Jimmy ever performed this until the '77 Zep tour.
Page managed to become a guitarist's guitarist & at the same time a favorite among the non playing community. It's that magical combination of technical prowess & songwriting genius.
pages later acoustic works were better, " the rain song" and " bron-y-aur" to name a few.,,( no sign of bert jansch or davey graham in those compositions either)
Have y'all heard Billy Fury's Nothin shakin...the b-side to 'I Will' ; it features a blistering solo played by a young session guitarist...yeah Jimmy Page! (1964)
como on people, lets demystify these guys, I mean Page, Hendrix, etc. They are good song writers but play very basic things. Musically speaking he is not doing anything here. Rock guitarist in general are pretty basic and narrow, any classical, jazz, bossa nova, tango or flamenco guitarist is 100 times better than Jimmy page.
Jimmy is good but come on, he is not a god of guitar. What he plays here is a monotonous and fast progressions of chords. Any jazz musician can play something more melodic and rhythmic than this. Most rock guitarists know major, minor and a few seventh chords and of course just some positions of the pentatonic scale and thats all, they cant go musically further but because of the clothing, the mysticism of the band people call them gods.
@loombaron You're right and wrong. The reason this isn't that crazy is because it's a rip off of Davey Graham's "She Moves Through the Fair" and Bert Jansch's "Black water side." Both of those originals are pretty, brilliant ground breaking pieces. But ripping them off doesn't get you any guitar god cred.
@loombaron while you're right about page being overrated, it's clear from your writing that you don't know anything about this piece or what it entails
All I´m saying is that I studied guitar and people overate rock guitarists. Most of them just play major and minor power chords, rock riffs and pentatonic solos. I love Rock and Zeppelin but it annoys me when people say things like Jimmy Page the best guitarist of the world, that is ignorance. At least they should say it this way: Jimmy Page is one of the best ROCK N ROLL guitarist. He has the rock technique, he cannot go further. Check some classical guitarist, Page can´t play like that.
@loombaron Look, that's all fine. All I'm saying is that you shouldnt' talk about this piece if you don't know what it is (thought if you studied guitar I'm surprised you don't; ever heard of Davey Graham and Bert Jansch, or DADGAD?). Technically speaking there are no proper chords in this piece, and he certainly isn't using the blues scale to solo. Page was a lot more versatile than you're giving him credit for. As far as rock guitarists go, he certainly belonged to a class of his own.
Im from south america and Im sure you ve never heard about Cacho Tirao, Juanjo Dominguez, Athaualpa Yupanqui, Eduardo Falu and Luis Salinas whiare are world recognized guitarist.

@Bigkahkistan he was a great acoustic player for sure , he wasnt just about rock , country, blues, british folk ,middle eastern ,bluegrass, hes my fav all time guitarist...

@loombaron ignorance is saying that any guitarist is 'the best of the world" . Who is the best painter in the world ? Depends what you like to look at , right ? Sure there are different levels of technical skill , but I don't think that is a factor to most fans
@loombaron Agree, in the same way some classical guitarists won´t play Black Dog. That´s why I PREFER versatile guitar players, like Howe, Hackett, Morse, Page.
@loombaron yes he cannot play like them, but others cannot play like him also.
every guitarists have their own technique. jimmy page is not technically very good guitarist(for me of course), but he is very creative guitarist. so this the point, no matter how you play or how much technique you have, if you can give the emotion that you wanted to the audience, nothing else matters...
@onur7373 well if you can give emotion into your music and thats all the matters which is what page does, wouldn't that make him good?if you didn't sense emotion from hendrix's work then would he be the greatest of all time? or clapton, van helen, and etc..?
@loombaron you dont get it as has been said already......try starting with british follk music, roy harper for example to even understand where jimmy page was coming from ...
@loombaron "at least we are not murderers and we dont steal territories like you" last time heard history says the spanish and portuguese colonists stole south america , and murdered and raped the natives, and then later you installed a nice dictatorship and murdered a bit more.
There are a lot of videos on youtube of guitarists of other genres that play 100 times more than Jimmy Page. Nothing against Jmmy and Zeppelin, I like the band but I dont like that rock n roll exagerated marketing.
@loombaron, do yourself a favour. Don't underestimate or belittle other musicians. I would be very careful, when it comes to a judging the skill of a musician who gives credit to people who influenced and inspired him by playing and interpreting their music. The influence of Jansch and Graham are clearly audible behind one of Led Zeps best known songs: Kashmir. Also, there are a lot of rock guitarists out there with a classical or jazz background and a degree in music.
@loombaron I don't care if he's not musical, technical, classical, sophisticated or if he's allegedly overrated. He makes me feel because he feels. Be it Mozart, Page or a little kid whistling with a blade of grass, they share emotions like no others, and that is why for me they can be the best, even if they don't play your fucking tango.
@loombaron Oh my, you sound so sophisticated. I know a tango guitarist myself. I know personally know people who play in many styles and are, technically, much better than Page, for instance. But his composition and style, feeling and emotion are very much deeper. Anybody can play The Rain Song... but who makes it sound like Pagey? No one. It's the same with guys like Gilmour and Howe. There's people who match them in speed and complexity, but they sill are unequaled in colour.
Playing guitar isn't actually very hard. Making it sound soulful is basically impossible. Maybe only 20 guitarists on the planet have ever achieved the feat in the last 50 years.
@jimmydanpage Yeah, but Bert Jansch's version is way different than the original or even Ann Brigg adaptation. Nobody said Bert Jansch was a brilliant lyricist for Black Water Side but the guitar work and composition is all him save for the basic melody.
dude everybodys been raggin on zep because they "stole old bluesmens work" well those old blues songs were sang in cottonfields, then churches, then once people started recording black artists thats when the songs got heard. you cant own music, it's meant to be shared and enjoyed, and it's about your interpretation of the jams. dont go to a zep video and start raggin on them. thats just douchey
Jimmy plays in a lot of open tunings. I think he's in open D here. Try it! Fool around in open tunings , you might surprise yourself with what you can do!
a musical genius, and master of the guitar, i think only a guitar player can understand how deep his level of guitar playing is, to be a master at a young age of various styles, using open string tunings, when everybody else was playing 3 chord bar chord songs, LOL! people are still trying to figure out how he did some things, especially me!
Also, seems to me that, given music history (the history of art, really, which has always been about building on what others have created before since there aren't that many artists of any kind who can create totally new stuff), what the people who are upset about is money, not music. Or glory by association - it's not like people gripe about not being credited when the music isn't very good.
@NoAppend Nope, not contradicting, just adding some music history perspective. Fiction writer say there are no new stories, just new ways to tell the stories. It's no different with music. The issue isn't about new songs, it's about new ways to play the songs that have been played one way or another for a long time, since not so many musicians are also composers.
@NoAppend Your a fucking idiot if you think Nervous Breakdown sounds like communication breakdown considering THE MUSIC AND LYRICS ARE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.
ICQYB-Credited
HMMT-You fucked up here The song has no relations to that song by tha wolf it has lyrics from other blues songs but nothing substantial.
BIGLY is clearly credited(Page/Bredon/Plant) Meaning they WROTE a good portion of what appeared on the album.
YSM Is credited
D&C was a reworking sure Holmes deserves a credit but no full fucking credits.should be (Page/Holmes)
YTISG.Ha! You coudn't come up with a song there It has the same chord progression as dear mr fantasy by Traffic which is hardly a big deal and its rumored Jimmt page played on it.
I'd have to agree, but somehow he covers up the sloppiness of his electric guitar work and pulls it off. Somehow... XD
Anyway, his acoustic playing is literally about 85% of my acoustic style. I love experimenting with odd chord voicings in alternate tunings just as he did. It seems like every day I find something new that I like. :P Page had the right idea. :)
Good Times Bad Times and Communication Breakdown and Your time is goona come are completely original.
Dazed And Confused is a reworking Of some sucky ass song and not a c0ver
You Shook me And I cant fuck you baby are the only 2 proper covers on there Ho I'm gonna fuck you was Credited (Plant/Page/Bredon) it used to be trad but Bredon iinformed page and he changed it.
@NoAppend I One of the original points of music was to copy and thereby spread and share not only the word message, but the emotion that provides the full and original emotion of the word message. In every other field of music people always play other people's songs. It's been that way since cave man days, and always it has been honor from the ones who best express the music to the composer just by playing the music so well. Just sayin'.
@NoAppend That's exactly what I was thinking. Every time I listen to Heartbreaker I cringe because of the solo. He can do great electric licks but he's far better on the acoustic guitar.
@kildare97 What, I can't have an opinion? I'm tired of all of you hippies who are all "blah blah it doesn't matter if he's sloppy he has emotion". I wasn't insulting his technique, its just that I cringe at the solo.
@kildare97 Yes, I cringe because he played sloppy. I love the song, but that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend to like it because he "plays with feeling".
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mr. Page, and his bandmates... but please, PLEASE check out Bert Jansch and his song "Black Water Side." Page makes no secret of the influence this guy was on him.
it's called white summer and it's on coda in the complete led zeppelin or the led zeppelin box set it's aldo on the first disc of the led zeppein dvd only that was a better version from 1970 and it was done with his danelectro

Or glory by association - it's not like people gripe about not being credited when the music isn't very good.
fasterhorses 3 months ago

You disgust me
kildare97 3 months ago
@NoAppend Your an idiot is all I have to say.
BMS Trad
Communication Breakdown -Original
kildare97 3 months ago
@NoAppend
PinknessOfFloyd 3 months ago
@NoAppend Whole Lotta love was on LZ2
Good Times Bad Times and Communication Breakdown and Your time is goona come are completely original.
Dazed And Confused is a reworking Of some sucky ass song and not a c0ver
You Shook me And I cant fuck you baby are the only 2 proper covers on there Ho I'm gonna fuck you was Credited (Plant/Page/Bredon) it used to be trad but Bredon iinformed page and he changed it.
kildare97 3 months ago
@NoAppend I One of the original points of music was to copy and thereby spread and share not only the word message, but the emotion that provides the full and original emotion of the word message. In every other field of music people always play other people's songs. It's been that way since cave man days, and always it has been honor from the ones who best express the music to the composer just by playing the music so well. Just sayin'.

jimmy page oced said "look ma solo with no hands"
ciscofjg 3 months ago
@NoAppend That's exactly what I was thinking. Every time I listen to Heartbreaker I cringe because of the solo. He can do great electric licks but he's far better on the acoustic guitar.
lonewolf604 3 months ago
@lonewolf604 He left it the way it was instead of overdubbing it.
Stop being such a technical puss bag It was a loose solo
kildare97 3 months ago
@kildare97 What, I can't have an opinion? I'm tired of all of you hippies who are all "blah blah it doesn't matter if he's sloppy he has emotion". I wasn't insulting his technique, its just that I cringe at the solo.
lonewolf604 3 months ago
@lonewolf604 I'm not even a hippy I mainly listen To Classic Rock and Punk.
And how dare you cringe at it the solo in that and The Lemon song made me play guitar
kildare97 3 months ago
@kildare97 Yes, I cringe because he played sloppy. I love the song, but that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend to like it because he "plays with feeling".
lonewolf604 3 months ago
