Raccoons are so cute, but they piss me off because they steal my dogs food.

@AcidfartProductions - They'll do that - :) As long as there's a source of food, raccoons will do their best to find it. If you continually take the dogs' food inside over-night, they may get the message that there isn't any food there, and they'll stop coming. Not sure if you can do that or not (if your dogs are outside all the time or not), but that's one thing that should work.

such nice, clear videos! what type of camera do you use? are they looking at the camera because they hear the lens adjusting? they look nervous, but at the same time, can't turn down the free food!

@minkyblack - Sorry about the late response! True on the free food! They're really not all that nervous about the camera, I think they're *more* nervous about the shadows it casts (because they make it look bigger than it is due to the light) - my camera is a Panasonic AG-HMC150 and the video was shot in 720p60 mode...

Different coons like different things, not really sure why, maybe Rocky had more of a culinary background - :) I've been giving them non-cooked eggs, because it would be closer to what they'd find in the wild.

I wonder how long you could have an egg stay outside without getting bad?  Maybe it doesn't matter to the animals?

I'm not sure on that one - they usually stay out a maximum of 12 hours, that's how long it takes the coons to find them - :) We put everything out at 3 or 4 in the afternoon (put food down and set up the remote camera to record), and the raccoons usually come between 11-12 and 3-6am, so the eggs aren't usually out there for very long. Lately they've been out a little longer, because the raccoons don't seem to want frozen-to-the-ground-hard eggs - ;)

I wondered all night if I had the feeder secured to the ground well enough, the raccoon proved me wrong - :) It's just cool to see him notice that the feeder mat's free, but not knowing what to do next. "Ooh! It's not bolted down... should I take it??"

What Codec is this? Youtube's system tends to convert things to such crap that you can't normally achieve this level of quality...

@Anticept - Thanks! YT does tend to screw the quality up sometimes! Well, the video was shot in AVCHD at 720p60, converted to Apple Intermediate Codec for editing, the final file (also in AIC) was taken to MPEG Streamclip and re-compressed as an MP4 file (using H.264) at around 30-35Mbps, and then uploaded here. I'm surprised at how well it came out too, the only downside is the YouTube video isn't 60p - it flows so much better at 60p!

Hi! Thank you very much for saying so, I'm glad you like them! This video was shot with a Panasonic AG-HMC150 HD camcorder at 60p (720p60), I have other videos that are shot with a bunch of different cameras, a lot of them eBay rejects (like the "Hamcampsterball" video)

best videos i have seen ..with so much clarity..i have these guys all around the house in the woods..i dont think its that bad to feed them..we have taken over their territory so food is prob. scarce ..anyways great filming! thanksxo

Thank you for saying so! I don't see any problem with feeding them, just as long as it's not in excess. I try not to feed them *too* much (you don't want them to rely on you solely for food, but to have another "stopover" on their foraging routes isn't bad). I wish I had raccoons where I lived (I tape all of my raccoon videos at a friend's house)!

You're awesome too, you've had the chance to work with raccoons and other wildlife! :) I love raccoons, everything from their inquisitiveness to their intelligence (and I like their destructive side too :)) - they're absolutely fascinating to me! Yes, I am on the east coast! I have noticed (from watching another in Cali. that has raccoons) that California raccoons seem to have a black mask that goes underneath their muzzle as well as the top - ours rarely have that!

I read the story about you not being able to find him at the beginning of the month, I'm glad everything worked out (it's so "raccoon"-like to hide in a cabinet and make everyone think you're missing - :))

I got a great shot of the exact behavior you're talking about - I'll be releasing that in the 2nd part of this series. One of the coons flattened her ears back, and RAN at another coon!

Good video and it is nice to see a new one from you. I like the way their ears move when they are listening. It was funny when she was carrying the bag away with her, Doggy bags for raccoons. You are brave with that good microphone out in the open. I am glad they left it alone.

I'm glad you liked it so much, raccoons are just amazing animals - :) That shot is one of my favorites too (the one at 2:25) - I love the way it's ear slowly scans back and forth, but it's head stays staring straight ahead. I'm not sure how good a still of that picture would be, it's a little grainy, but I should put a graphic together! Something like the mosaic in my background. Hehe... at the rate I've been working though, that may take a while - :)

Thanks for saying so, it's such a relief to me that these raccoons live in a less-travelled area, not as much to interfere with them as there would be in a more suburban area. The wooden dowel holding the bag to the ground actually snapped in half, that's why it carried it off! "Whoops! Oh, I can take off with it now!!" I love when it grabbed the feeder and almost tripped over it while running off with it - :)

I thought the hand was funny too - I saw my one light kick on, hit RECORD on the camera and then turned the big light on, wondering what kicked the first light on, and then I saw it - raccoon paw! :)

Thank you! I was actually inside when I taped this, controlling the camera from a remote zoom device, but the camera and microphone is right out there with them. I'd love to be able to tape things like this while being out there with them, but they'd just run off, so the motorized panhead is the next best thing - :)
