  • I remember the first time that i heard that south americans drank something called "mate" i thought it was a drug! but my parents that are mexicans talked me about it and they say its a popular drink in Argentina and that it's delicious... I want to try ;)

  • Meh Coffee is alright. Yerba Matte is the tits on fire.

  • I can haz mate?

  • Is delicious and is not a drug.

  • mate is more subtle than coffee due to the form of caffeine

  • well, NO yerba is not as much a jolt as good coffee like Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, for example BUT it's stronger than black tea / common tea / green tea ...

  • If you make coffee the american way (starbucks), then I suppose mate is stronger on caffeine, otherwise the coffee (expresso or turkish coffee) should be stronger still.

  • Honestly, its nothing compared to coffee. Coffee makes me jittery and anxious, but mate energizes your whole body and makes you wanna do something productive.

  • i buy the yerba mate tea packets and put half water, half milk then microwave for a minute and add hot chocolate. not at all traditional way to prepare it but it makes it taste amazing.

  • yerba matte is like liquid crack

  • @stanley4889 how?

  • @stanley4889 so is the iced tea they sell in NorthEast Pennsylvania.

  • ESPRESSO not "EXPRESSO"

  • @WiiGeee It can be pronounced that way as well.

  • let me tell you all you need to kno about it, it has a kick in that totally rocks yet dosent crash like other stimulants (its amazing) it has anout as mutch caffine as a redbull minus all the extra artificial stuff it taste either earthy and kinda nutty or like earthy and almost cedar like (i like bolth but prefer cedar like) by the way i have been drinking this stuff for a long time like before it was cool or trendy and do it for the flavor and effects

  • As an American I am never surprised when other Americans appear to be reluctant or afraid to try something new. Yerba mate is yummy...I like both smoked and unsmoked, depending on my mood. So, fellow Americans, drink the yerba mate!

Don't be afraid, it might change your life!

  • @BurlFish79 I have no idea what you are trying to say..

  • @informationplz best way to explane it, unsmoked = green tea, smoked can range but has a cedar or nutty tastt in my experence

  • @themadscientest Like I said...I enjoy both smoked AND unsmoked. Any yerba mate is good to me..If only more people could find out about this incredible drink!! PAZ

  • @informationplz its best warm from a well cured gourd through a stainless steel bombilla and iv figured out how to save cracked gourds try gurilla glue white just put a little it works

  • @pancho133 WRONG, its a mistake. MATE is originary of THE PARAGUAY, of the GUARANIES indians and of the missions. Do you know the MENSU?? Originary of the antique PARAQUARIA, Argentina not existed 400 years ago, PARAGUAY is the FATHER of the Argentina and of the pioners argentinians. ILEX PARAGUAYENSIS=MATE. Sorry man, I demand more respect for the truth. Paraguay, braves guarani peoples land...

  • YERBA MATE THE BEST !!! my favorite is Tucangua Organic very very strong ! is two times stronger than coffee esspresso !

  • tonterias

  • I am from Argentina (from the origin country of the mate) and originally it is with water, but if you like, you can drink it with coffee, milk, whysky or other things...

  • @pancho133 WRONG, its a mistake. MATE is originary of THE PARAGUAY, of the GUARANIES indians and of the missions. Do you know thwe MENSU?? Originary of the antique PARAQUARIA, Argentina not existing 400 years ago, PARAGUAY is the FATHER of the Argentina and of the pioners argentinians. ILEX PARAGUAYENSIS=MATE

  • @BurlFish79 1-Argentina have more years than Paraguay

2- Mate have been invented in Paraguay and Argentina (Misiones, argentine province is in the forntier with Paraguay and Brazil), so it isn't only paraguayan.

  • @brigad09 come back to school teeny. PARAGUAY refunded the Buenos Aires City with paraguayans of the Asuncion city, and funded others argentinians cities. The mate is guarani of the northets of Paraguay. Find the olds books & maps; and enjoy the antique and biggets PARAGUAY, mother of countries.... bye donkey..

  • @BurlFish79 You want to discuss me being argentine that mate isn't argentine? It is originally from Argentina and Paraguay, because the Guaranís invented it, Guaranies were in Paraguay and Misiones (province of Argentina), the indians hadn't frontiers, so they didn't say, HERE IS PARAGUAY, HERE IS ARGENTINA, they were Guaranis and Guaranis were in Argentina too.

It's ok that we have 85% european ascendence but we have some indian too

  • just sell coca tea

  • English: View as is prepared and packaged yerba mate .... Spanish: Proceso de molienda y envasado de la yerba mate.

  • I don't know why (not at all) USA is stealing something from other Countries? Mate is from Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and in part of Mexico

  • Mate is the best thing you can drink, the only recommendation I can give you, Drink it with no sugar. that is what make it bad.

  • @1204012magnolia i drank it and i died,its bad for you...

  • Coffee, IMO, is more of a physical stimulant, a "jump starter" for those groggy mornings, with lesser mentally stimulating aspects, while YM is a well rounded stimulant that has a smoother "ride" & is better suited for tasks that demand quick reaction time/mental processing speed. Plus, it is very healthy & makes me feel great. If I had to choose one over the other, YM wins hands down. I find that drinking YM after lunch yields the greatest effects. Enough with green tea, mate owns.

  • @evrithnguneed Yep, Mate owns. I'm from Argentina, and here is really common the mate.

  • you can buy it cheap at trader joes

  • qué dice? alguien q me traduzca..

  • Drinking Yerba Mate does make me feel good. :)

  • Comment removed

  • haha "It's good" hell no... it tastes like crap the first time xD

"Taste likes tea" stupid white lady :)

  • tastes much better cold especially mixed with lemonade (cold mate is called tereré) it's brewed like normal mate and then added to a glass filled with ice cubes, it's very invigorating

  • using chilled water with a gourd is really refreshing

  • @ 1 min.. Yes it DOES sound funny, because you pronounce it wrong lady!

Why does everyone immediately take out the bombilla? :S

  • Hi, I enjoy Yerba Mate.

I've had problem sleeping after drinking it at times. Does anyone else have that problem?

    Thanks.

  • obviously since it has lots of caffiene, and the title of this article was bigger jolt than coffee, maybe thats why u cant sleep. duh

  • Duh! :)

  • ya..thats from the caffine

  • what simplycranky said :)

    Silly...

  • My friend says it keeps him up all night if he drinks it in the afternoon. supposedly it doesn't keep you up like coffee does, but there's always exceptions

  • It's frustrating because a couple of times I really wanted and needed to go to bed but I just couldn't. It's frustrating.

  • thats the traditional way to drink it like that but they didnt do it like the traditional way :| with the yerba slanted like a hill so that some leaves stay dry so that when it starts to lose flavor u can add them later

  • Be careful, the FDA is bound to outlaw it in the US just like they did with ephedra. Stupid ass FDA.

  • Yerba isn't being sold as a weight loss drug and hasn't killed anyone.

  • I don't know why she thinks it sounds funny...

I started drinking roasted mate years ago, and I love it. I've always prepared it in a tea pot, but as I recently got my first gourd in the US, I've been brewing and drinking mate (not roasted) the traditional way in the last few days. But as I keep drinking it by filling the gourd several times (since I use a lot of mate leaves, I don't want to waste it by only pouring water once) I start feeling sick. Maybe I'm just drinking it too much...

  • That dummy at the end talks about its Caffeine level... funny thing is Mate contains absolutely no Caffeine, rather Mateine, a close relative that has some of the same effects and properties as Caffeine.

  • What other drinks/tes, etc. have Mateine in them? I've noticed how Yerba Mate wakes me up and is very soothing without that sick feeling caffine gives.

  • Wrong

  • A cunning remark, by an equally cunning linguist.

    /sarcasm

    Care to expound?

  • Do any extend of research on yerba and you will find that there is no stereoisomer of caffeine. Mateine is a myth. the sensation you attain is from th theobromine which is contained in the stems.

  • Mateine = Caffeine.

  • are you still talking about this you dolt? Christ gtfo.

  • Lot's of other ingredients also, the combination is what counts. So not the same thing as consuming normal caffeine in coffee.

  • I just started drinking this drink for 1 week and half and I say that I have not been needing coffee for energy. Gread drink.

  • Lol, No bitch, it does not sound funny! it tastes great!

  • Jump on the bandwagon. It's the best thing out there. Will change your life-FOREVER, and for the best!!

  • YEAH! YERBA MATE getting the respect it deserves!
