  • The Master System managed different sprites for Scoprion and Sub Zero; the Mega Drive couldn't:D.

  • is this 2 player?

  • Last release for the SMS was mickey's ultimate challenge in 98 in brazil.

  • Last MS release in Europe was in '96 (Smurfs 2), and yes, it was supported into the noughties in Brazil. Don't know of any games after Street Fighter II in '97, but TecToy kept making and marketing new models.

  • no signal lol

  • yeh very good for 8bit, still i wont be buying this version!

  • I never knew they made this for the master system. It looks good for 8-bit!

  • I never knew they made this for the master system.

  • god this version sucks ass the moves are slow the music sucks and the sound is awful

  • Graphicly, yes. audibly, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • according to wikipedea, master system is still being produced in Brazil. Amazing!

  • @SOUTHWESTENZ haha, its so easy to find master system here in brazil, it was my first video game by the way :D (sorry,my english sucks) hahahahaa

  • no pit fatality:)on this version

  • There actually is a version of Mortal Kombat for nes, it is called mortal kombat 3 and is made by hummer team

  • Poor Kano. He got bitchlisted

  • Rayden instead of Raiden? O.O

  • this game have the gameboy musics:D

  • no kano:(

  • Hahah nice!! Can't wait for the new one!! Demo next week.

  • Thanks lots, I got this when it came out before I upgraded to a Snes, I was very impressed with it, graphics and sound blew me away, slightly easier than the 16bit versions though...There was blood...had to enter a code on the code screen like on Megadrive. Cant remeber the Master system blood code but Megadrive code was A,B,A,C,A,B,B.

  • Looks like the game gear version

  • I love the Sega Master System and have a bunch of games including this. "Technical superiority" over the NES is not universal. The SMS's main advantage is that it can display more colors on screen from a larger palette than the NES.

  • you should review master's of combat for the SMS, it's unreal.

  • 2,1,2 down, up :)

  • This looks unbelievable. Sega, who knew?

  • I grew up with mortal Konbat and the master system.

But never the two together! I played mortal Kombat on my amiga and loved playing others games on the sega.

Because the 8 bit mortal kombat was the lest fluid version of mortal kombat ever..i really hated playing it.

still nes would never have been able to do this at all.

  • I love how so many people have posted about the blood code in these comments. Learn to Ctrl+F, or did you actually think you were the first person to tell him about the code.

  • wow i never knew there was an real 8bit version of this game.

i cant believe they did it why didnt they release it on the nintendo aswell lol

  • snes all the way

  • Thats pretty much the exactly the same as the original Gameboy version. Without the color of course.

  • i would love to see what it sounded like with the FM chip add on.. i know some people out there have it on theirs.. do you have it, gamester?

  • lol, they spelled Raiden's name wrong

  • in 1995 i remember paying $50 for this game and it was the best

  • the blood blood and death moves code is 2,1,2,down,up. You have to press it when all that writing comes up at the beginning of the game where it talks about some code.

  • on 1:18 press 2,1,2,down,up for the blood cheat

  • You had to input the blood code to get the blood on the Master System, Genesis, And I think Sega CD Version of mortal kombat 1

  • rocky on the sega master system was my favorite game i got mines in 1988 i was 11 years old btw do you remember the 1st master systems to come out had a built in maze game in order to get it 2 work you had 2 wait till the sega logo came on and hold left and B for like 10 seconds!!

  • Hey man just want to say that you are good at this. Easy to listen to and choose the right stuff. Thanks.

  • is this game rare?

  • They could put it on nes. On MM and other games, even though they have 3/4 colors per sprite versus the SNES/GENS/SMS 15/16, they can split it into different spirtes that they only have two people on screen. This would make it more like SMS versus monochrome.

MM makes his head a different sprite from his helmet and body, since they already used the 3 colors for the black, light blue and dark blue colors for the rest.

  • i no there is no C button but I still remember the blood code for genesis (like a song) a,b,a,c,a,b,b

  • People seldomly give proper credit to Master System. Thanks for that. :) I had a SMS first and owned a japanese famicom afterwards. The technical downgrade was a slap on the face.

  • on the genesis when it talks about the "code" if you put in A B A C A B B the white letters turn red and it gives you blood in the game it's called the blood code obviously...

  • even if you compare iconic games to each other the sms simply out performs the nes.... sonic 2 vs smb3 hands down sonic has excellent graphics for 8 bits

  • Sounds like gameboy music.

  • Are there fatalities in this game?

  • SMS had so many ports of popular 16 bit arcade ports. I think most are from Brazil, where the system was huge way into the 16 bit era. Great review. I was hopin they included the fatalities.

  • i was about to comment about the if this was a port to Game Gear before you said it.

  • They should have ported Mortal Kombat to the NES.

  • @PaulHong22 The NES could hardly handle this.

  • @MyNameIsBucket Well, the Gameboy is kind of just a Pocket NES like Sega Game Gear is a Pocket Master System.

  • @PaulHong22 The Gameboy had a number of advantages over the NES. It's got "tons" more RAM (16kb total while the NES had a little over 5kb), bigger cartridge sizes (1Mb average, while NES average was about 128kb), and a slower but more advanced CPU. (NES has 2 CPUs at 1MHz and 5MHz, while the Gameboy's was 4MHz. However, the Gameboy Color's could do 8MHz).

They may not sound like big numbers but it makes games like Mortal Kombat possible.

  • @PaulHong22 I'm not sure of the SMS vs. Game Gear, but I'm pretty sure the SMS is more powerful than the NES.

  • there is blood in this game, @ the code screen you most press 2,1,2 Down, up

  • this kind of reminds me of the Game Boy version

  • You can get blood in this game all you have to do is enter a code. The code is 2, 1, 2, down, up. At the screen were it says, the word code has many.

  • Ok, so this has more physical ability, while the other has better games, hands down.

  • the master system is awesome. I just beat wonderboy 3 the other day yet again... which is an awesome game.

  • All Sega systems aside from Sega Genesis had problems with third party support. Such a terrible shame.

  • Why would they want to port this to an underpowered system with a controller that only has two buttons? You should have told us how the control scheme works. Can you pull off fatalities? Can you kick and punch both high and low? For a game that was meant for six button controls I'm skeptical as to whether or not they made a decent port

  • well you obviously never played this port

  • Yes, that's why I'm asking him to talk more about it.

  • i have heard somewhere that mortal kombat on all sega platforms got banned in Germany it that true? if it is true then it suprises me as Germany often ban Things with Nazi references

  • tthe master system was massive here in europe im not sure why but i remember in england at one time everyone seemed to own one

  • i had this for the genesis

  • when did sega stop makeing games for the master system

  • I believe they stoped making games in the US in the early 90's, around '92/'93. They made games much later in countries where it was more popular like Brazil.

  • @Gamester81 In the UK I believe sega stopped supporting the system at the same time as the megadrive, in order to support the Saturn

  • I know its only 8 bit but that looks bad compared to the other MK. For 8 bit its good though.

  • Pretty nifty you own 8 bit Mortal Kombat.

  • Hi, here is the blood cheat, on the screen where it is telling you about the code press 2,1,2, down, up

  • I had this game 15 years ago, there is a code ( which i can't remember ) which allows blood, also the fatality moves each character can preform, during the 'Finish him' part of each round. During the opening of the game, a screen describing codes appears. Try this button combination, 2,1,2,down,up. Would be nice to know if this works

  • I really dislike the NES for some reason, I grew up with it but I didn't really like how freakin annoying the sound effect were and how the graphic were. I'll take atari 2600 over NES any day

  • Yeah the nes sure as HELL couldnt do this lol

  • awesome video dude the MK1 for the sega master system is an awesome port hey could you do a review of mortal kombat 3 for the game gear

  • is your tv a vizio?

  • Yeah it is. =)

  • yea i recognise that blue anywhere.

  • @thebudgetgamer what game that away? The vizio sticker on his TV..or...well

  • @davidgsr2k i'm an idiot.

  • Wow that is pretty amazing...I didn't about this game either. And it came out in 93? only like a year after it's been out for the arcades.I would of killed to get this game back then..ofcourse I didn't have a SMS(not a lot of ppl did) ,I would of figured a way to get one!! If they only had more games like this earlier on,would of been more of a threat to nes.

  • Oh wow that is crazy! I came across this one day when I was major into roms but I thought it was just something made by people, as in a non-legit version. That is really awesome I totally want this version!

  • Wow .. I never knew Mortal Kombat existed on the Sega Master System ..

  • the sms biggest fail was its lack of any decent programmers working on the software

  • it looks very simular to the game gear version.

  • @mojohookbarb The MS version of MK1 and the GG version are the same. The Game Gear is the same hardware as the master system.

  • I believe this game is only release in Europe for the Sega Master console. In Europe, the Sega Master is the dominating 8-Bit console over the NES that's why it received more popular games than the US Sega Master. In Brazil, it was even more popular earning a Street Fighter II port as well for that region.

  • Had this game in New Zealand to bro

  • Awesome John, thanks for letting me know about this, I might need to track this down for my own SMS Collection :)

  • Dude, there is a blood code for this:

At the code of honor screen, press 2, 1, 2, Down, Up.

  • Cool, great to know. Thanks!

  • did it work?

  • I haven't tried it yet to be honest, but I'll be sure to let you know when I do.

  • yes its correct

  • I'm with ya, SMS is the superior system.
