Anyone else notice that his outfit and hair is the same as the Ben Stiller character 'White Goodman' when he goes to seduce Kate in Dodgeball? 'There's no resisting White Goodman when he puts on his shiny shoes...'
Lovely song. But what i can't understand is, why he has his piano stool set so high. I guess it makes him more visible, but it can't make playing the piano very easy!
I didn't know David Pomeranz wrote this song but I heard his version. and this song is that old? such a timeless classic. I was born in the wrong decade it seems.
One of the great all time love sonnets....Barry Manilow and the writer, convey Willie Shake the spear...with words and melodies...I LOVE MUSIC...BARRY....
Let us all be grateful that we have a YouTube to watch the great Barry Manillow at each stage of his career! Any other comments other than "Barry comments" are unnecessary and inappropriate to this place!
Guys! The focus is on this great icon of American music! Reflect on this!!
I hated Barry Manilow when I was kid, froced to listen to him for years by my mum, his music drove me mad. Now at 30, I own all of his music, absolutely brilliant.
@OhJaniceWhyOhWhy - Wow, bitter much? How do you KNOW they are "dumb broads?" You must really hate yourself because for someone to be that ugly about others, it is ALWAYS a case of the person's inner landscape being really sad, lonely and depressing. Try making yourself happy and then SHARE that happiness and joy. You aren't going to lift yourself up by putting others down. This is a fact of life.
MANILOW=THE BEST POP MALE SINGER IN THE PAST SIXTY YEARS!
Sinatra fan here now acknowledging that I find Barry Manilow just about equal to the great Frank Sinatra in do many ways!
I love Barry's Ballad singing! All "his songs" are truly beautiful ones! He sings them with verve and passion and love!
Message to Barry Manilow: As your grandfather said to you when you were ten years old: "Sing, Barry, Sing." The World loves your Music! Grandpa is still giving you that standing ovation!!!!
To all the young gentlemen and ladies 30 or under: For decades there have been great artists like Barry Manilow who just were very popular a bit before your time. Please explore other artists on YouTube like Barry Manilow who are incredible singers and performers. Examples: Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble,
Tony Bennett, Gene Kelly ("Singing in the Rain"), and others like these! I think you will all be fascinated!
I think this song is one of the most heartfelt songs Barry sings! It was beautifully composed! Barry here with his 1970's youthful voice, energy, and vocal prowess sings it just perfectly. A Great Performance!
Barry is in a class by himself, at the very top of the talent list when it comes to great ballad singers! This gentleman loves his music, and it shows! Each ballad Barry sings is a thing of beauty, great phrasing, and vocal perfection! Barry, together with Frank Sinatra are the two top singers of the past 60 years!!!
Barry Manilow and Karen Carpenter for me are the two best ballad singers of the last 40 years. They both sang with such sincerity, and neither had to over sing a song in order to achieve so much emotional depth and beauty!
I NOW TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THE SUCCESS OF BOTH MANILOW AND SINATRA! Both Frank and Barry are "story-singers of love." They sing about love found, love sought, unreturned love and we all relate to such songs! The songs are beautiful and touch each of us emotionally! We feel that the song(s) relate to our lives, and the words actually often do! Enough analysis! Manilow is A Great Singer!!!
Barry's voice back then was approaching his peak, strong booming, nasal clarity, totally equipped to belt over the choral blitz of full orchestras, especially live in concert, wher its sink or swim.Piano stool is set high for max. presentation and visability for audience, he's a lanky 6'2" with long arms to reach. As for the ditzy chicks, they're stoned and if they were out in the London Fog, Jack the Ripper might get 'em.
I never noticed when I was a kid, but he is saying he's at the doctor explaining that he needs something because he's been "Up" "down" and trying to get the feeling again.
@LilBunnyFooFoo1 I would guess his piano stool is high like that so that the camera can get a well-framed shot of his face and shoulders. But, yes, it does look funny from the side!
He actually looks like White Goodman (Ben Stiller) from Dodgeball when he puts on his white leather outfit to chat up the accountant at her house! It's gotta be the hair, feathered and lethal!
True but what do want them to do? Throw various articles of clothing at him? Barry is not interested in women, NOT that there is anything wrong with that.
@janicepjam I agree. The blonde girl in the front row with the red rose in her hair seems to be more concerned about the overhead camera than she is about listening to one of best songs ever composed.
@janicepjam Yeah, but have you ever noticed that about 70's TOTP audiences? Absolutely NO-ONE seemed to impress them! They were more interested in looking behind them to see if the camera was on them.
@janicepjam many girls dont appreciate attractive males.they only see males as meal tickets.and as far as they're conscerned, any meal ticket will do.barry manilow looks GREAT here.and he's doing a GREAT job.
Bassa sings the same version as his recording here but claims he was miffed that the two bridges that Pomeranz sings ( 'Read every book ... etc. ) were cut from the record for 'timing' reasons ( see Songfacts ) and his subsequent performances included the bridges. Not so here - anyone know where there is a full version ? I also prefer his opening lyrics ( Doctor my woman ... ) to the Pomeranz/Carpenters version
couldn't agree more FallDH - a hellishly complex song to sing and he does it effortlessly. A masterclass in tasteful, sincere ( without being melodramatic ) singing that is a model for every singer
Anyone else notice that his outfit and hair is the same as the Ben Stiller character 'White Goodman' when he goes to seduce Kate in Dodgeball? 'There's no resisting White Goodman when he puts on his shiny shoes...'

I watch this video many times!
Barry's passion and love for music + his great talent really show in this performance!
It is a beautiful song, composed by David Pomeranz. But Barry made it a big hit, with his love of music, great voice and passion!
Barry is now a beloved singer world-wide!
He has sold over 85 million albums and brought great joy to the world!
