  • How does the bouyancy control work?

  • @RaisonnHead you wear a BCD (bouyancy control device) which is like a vest with air pockets that you can fill and empty; you also use the air in your lungs, take a deep breath and you go up, breathe out and you go down. The section you see in the video where we are going up and down is using the breathing technique.

  • And that's why I love Australia!

  • :( i want to scuba dive so bad but my dad wont let me =(

  • It's a different world beneath the waves! =)

  • I very recently got certified, Open Water. :] I did my 4 qualification dives in 2 degree Celsius water(in wet suit!), and by god I cannot wait to go to a warmer country to dive with fish and coral reefs! :D

  • just found out i can never in my life go scuba diving if i do i will die , .....pissed

  • it's an expensive hobbie but by god it is worth it. It's litterally otherworldly.

  • i like diving i am diver it's really happy moments i feel them

  • i like diving i am diver it's really happy moments i feel them

  • i cant wait to do my open water course only 3 months to go :)

  • could you do this without goggles?

  • that must be awesome diving there! i remember when i dived for the first time

  • THATS SO AWESOME AND BEAUTIFUL!

  • I started my SCUBA diving course today :) 7 week course to get my Ocean diver licence. Can't wait to get stuck in and be able to dive in such beautiful places such as this!

  • I'm just learning how to dive, but it's kind of hard considering i'm no where near the ocean, so right now they teach us in a huge pool, then we go to this big river, but i'd rather go to the ocean :/ i just have to wait until i'm older to move.

  • i just came back from scuba diving its really really fun!!!

  • yes fightsharkfishing24 but there are good scuba accident sites on the web too. try the myscubastory site. They have all sorts of dive stories and accident videos there. type myscubasory into google and its the first one. enjoy

  • HI! I'm a certified 13 year old! i got certified when i was eleven! i love this amazing video! i could watch scuba videos for hours straight!! how long did it take you to boat out there? i was doing my reasearch and i saw you could also get there by heliocoptor! thats so cool! please let me know what you saw on the dive, how deep you were, and the viz. Thank you for this breathe taking video!

  • scuba diving is probably the most coolest experience EVER!! =) when i went, it was sooo weird at first but yeaa lol =)

  • thumbs up if watching this in 2011 :)

  • Are you guys doing a course or just for fun?cause they seem like dive masters at the bottom talking to each other.

  • 5:40 wow, he has really white teeth.... amazing video by the way =)

  • This is great, I wish this is where I learned to dive. I did my open water dives in the Swan River in Western Australia. The conditions were shit, but it was still so much fun. I can't wait to go diving again, I'm just uncertain where locally.

  • yes seagirl19 but there are also good dive stories on the internet, try the myscubastory site. type myscubastory into google and its the first one

  • anyone notice the leaking tank when they were doing the bouyancy test?

  • my first dive i had a 5mm wet suite and a 5mm vest so i had to 10mm on my chest and i was freezing my ass off. we were lucky if the wat was pushing 64F

  • they look pretty good for a first dive

  • Lucky!! you got to se a cuttlefish!!

  • Don't touch the coral! our huaman oils will damage it!

  • how deep under water is it?

  • @xAllie88x about 20 meters (60ft) maximum for an open water certificate

  • I'm 14 and I just started the PADI Open Water Certification. Scuba Diving here is one of the things I want to do before I die.

  • Nice vid! You know u can also read amazing dive stories on the myscubastory site. Type myscubastory into google and click on the first seach result !

  • despite what they say, the gbr isnt all that awesome

its a beautiful reef, just that when i have gone there it had too much tourism going on

my favorite places were in Indonesia, despite the shit government the reefs were untouched and the dives were amazing

  • is it sore wen u open your eyes wen u take off the mask

  • planning to do this in a months time XD so excited, are you allowed to touch fishies ? or other stuff that swim by ? is there certain things u arent allowed to touch ? or that might be ruff and cut urself ? also is there any chance of seeing dolfins ? lol :P

  • learnt do dive this summer. At Cyprus. And I can't wait to do it again. 1 day I want to go diving at the GBR, and I'm only 13 so time enough!! @bdriz16, it sure is fun ;)

  • i remember my first dive :)

  • @randombluepeople09 I'v actulay never dived my clostest was snorkling in guam but, I havint became a juior diver ether hoping to be come one this summer with my dad. He dives alot!

  • @randombluepeople09

    Haha, yeah me too.

But my first dive was in January, Holland.

It was freezing, snow on the land and under water it was dark and the water was muddy so the view was not so good.

But when i dive in water like this, it's really easy, so that's a plus ;)

  • great video did my open water course there last June :)

  • @MoSc2412 probably 20C.

  • is it hard to breathe with the scuba mask on?

  • @Changchey it feels weird at first but it's not hard.

  • @neilp2 Right on. It feels very weird, you just have to remember to not breathe in through your nose xD haha

  • @Changchey No it is very easy. You start in a pool,in the shallow end standing and you breath through your regulator with your head in the air then you sit so your head goes under, breathing just happens and it is very easy, but when submerged if you roll over like laying on your back looking to the surface breathingh gets a little harder but not dffucult.

  • Wow! that lady handing out C-cards had an amazing rack

  • I was in Maui and at my hotel there was a scuba diving session thing for only 90$ and it was pretty good. 30 mins in the pool to train, and about 1 hour in the ocean i believe

  • I'm certified and it is a great hobby, or sport... Anyway I recommend everyone to try it! It's a divers world down there.

  • My dream job...giving scuba-diving lessons off the GBR !

  • AHHHHH that looks like SO much fun :-). I can't wait until I go on my first dive!!!

  • Scuba Diving is by far the best thing to do on this planet.

  • I remember doing all of this! I miss scuba sooo much! I would love to go scuba diving in Australia! AMAZING!!

  • what were they doing when they took off their masks when they were in the water?

  • @jman21121 it's a test to make sure you don't panic, and that you can put it back on (in case it gets knocked off accidentally)

  • @jman21121 maybe they were cleaning the inside of the mask, but it's something you must do if you go diving you must be able to remove the water from your mask underwater.

  • @jman21121 It is basic skills needed in case it is knocked off or fogs up,it is easy to clear the water out, just lean your head back hold to top of the mask and blow out through your nose, the seal right under your nose breaks as the preasure in the mask increases the water drains out from the lowest part.

  • This great video has been done by the digital-water team onboard kangaroo Explorer.. Any questions on the reef, underwater video or even camera rental, contac us on digital-water website.

Looking forward seeing you soon underweater.

  • @nelip2 are there any laws that you should swim a certain distance away from the coral reef? ... say at least 5 feet away?

  • @kevinhvnguyen nope. just don't touch, don't damage it!

  • You are down pretty deep and I was just wondering...How do your ears deal with the pressure that must be pushing on them? How does that work?

  • @mullen1116 there's a process called equalisation where you blow air into the inner ear cavity to make the pressure the same.

  • haha cool - you did your training out in the ocean, we had to do ours in a pool. I bet that was exciting, knowing there was all that beautiful coral and life to look at but having to finish your practice! :-D

  • 24th July 2010

Tomorrow i'll be doing my final open water dive and if i complete that ill be a PADI OPEN WATER DIVER and i plan to do the under water photographer course and rescue diver

Is that a good choice? nice vid

  • @MrYEAY55Rock great choice.

  • ii love diving. I live in florida and there is nothing better than being 4 bars under with no veiw of the condos:]]]]]]

  • Nice video thanks for posting

  • cant wait to dive there

  • that weird floating shell thing makes me laugh

  • I wish i could do this so much.

  • my greatest dream is to visit the great barrier reef.

    i gonna learn scuba-diving :-D

  • whats the temperature there at about 20 meters?

  • getting my scuba license next yaer..

  • My grandads got me into this sport looks fun. Alot more interesting then most of todays sports.

  • i wish i could actually do something like this but i cant afford anything :/

  • i love this vid nice :D

  • Cool! Me and my friends are going to dive too to that reef when we will get out diving license.

What is name of the first of?

  • Damn...what a great place to learn. My Certification open water dives consisted of: Oregon coast, 40 degree air temp, 40 degree water temp, vis was less than 3 ft. LOL fun though.

  • this looks very cool! i'm just starting scuba diving :)

  • i hope this reef never die

  • superb... I live in india.. wanting to learn diving has been on my to do list for a couple of months... its barely known as a sport here.. I wud have to travel half way accross the country for it... BTW.. is SCUBA generally an expensive sport ?

  • it's certainly more expensive than snorkelling, you have to pay for the training, equipment rental, air tanks and boat rides ;)

  • cool...i will take a scuba license at 3 May..im so excited... :D:D:D:D:D

  • was that clam bigger than a dump truck

  • at 8:11 it blows me away

  • Wow! All that diversity of living things! So cool!

  • Great video! I did a speech on oceans, and I really want to become a scuba diving-photographer! Well, pretty much oceanographer... but I have a question for you. Howw deep is the water there where you were diving? It looks pretty shallow. Thanks!

  • we didn't go deeper than about 21 meters. the shallow parts where we did the training are probably around 10 meters

  • nice video..nice music!!

  • Does the tank just contain pure oxygen or...?

  • Generally it's just normal air, though it's filtered and the moisture is reduced before it's compressed. so 80% Nitrogen, 19% Oxygen and 1% other.

Advanced divers can also specialize in enriched air (Nitrox) which has a higher oxygen content and allows you to dive for a little longer.

  • Beautifu!

  • aw i want a go my biggest wish is 2 become a marine bioligist wen i grow up xxx

  • @Animaltricks18 i dont wanna burst your bubble or anything. but theyre is NO finding a job as a marine bioligist. Everyone wants to be a marine bioligist, its an easy degree, and there arent any jobs in it.

  • how long does the gas tank last?

  • that depends on a number of factors:

    1) how big your tank is

    2) how quickly you breathe (which can be quite quick for beginners)

    3) how deep you go

A typical recreational dive is of the order of 30 to 45 minutes.

  • air cylinder*

  • WOW that water looks pristene.

  • 6:32 blue spotted sting ray!!

  • I got my Junior Advanced Open Water Diver certification right before I turned 14...

I first got certified a few months before I turned 12.

When you do Advanced, I recommend doing Enriched Air and dry suit with it. You get a reduced cost with the nitrox.

  • god damn that looks like fun :D :D

  • i love the water

  • Went scuba diving for the first time a couple months ago, now im hooked I'm going for my certification soon!:)

  • ffs! i cant wait to be a marine biologist...

  • If there was more scuba diving and less wars there would be less suffering in the world

  • hi i am doing my junior course in 1 week, and im just wondering how deep are you in the video???

  • No more than 21 meters in this video.

  • hi, thanks, is there any good dives at 12 metres

  • oh man it's like my life ambition to go scuba diving, :)

  • I'm always scared to scuba dive because I heard if you come up to fast it can make bubbles in your blood and you die, is that true?

  • Yes and no. What you're describing is what's called "The Bends" where the nitrogren in your blood stream can turn to bubbles if you don't ascend correctly. A big part of the PADI training describes the procedures you should follow that would prevent this happening, e.g. using a dive computer or dive tables to plan your dive.

If you're doing simple shallow recreational dives like this, and following the (very conservative) rules then the chances of getting the bends are very small indeed.

  • In fact, the biggest risk of the bends if for very advanced divers that dive very deep (like 100m/300ft), and are required to do decompression stops during their ascent to reduce the nitrogen.

This is beyond the PADI Open Water certification whict most divers have.

  • i want to scuba dive but my only worry which sounds weird is if your down the bottom of the ocean and your tank loses all its oxygen

  • Don't be worried. That's what the PADI course is for, they teach you what to do if that happens, for example sharing air with your buddy, using their spare regulator, or ascending to the surface.

The important thing of course is not to run out of air in the first place, the tank has an air gauge like a car has a fuel gauge, just look at it often and surface before you run out of air! Normally you start with something like 200 PSI, and surface when you get down to 50.

  • It's my life goal to scuba dive.

  • Is it dangerous to dive in Australia? I am in melbourne now and I wish to learn scuba diving but I was told that there are a lot of sharks in australia..^^

  • Dangerous? No. Not on the great barrier reef (as far as I know!). The dive boats wouldn't take you out there if it was dangerous. I think the great whites are more common down near Sydney.

  • Hi, Thanks! ^^

  • Also, MOST shark attacks happen when a shark is confused in poor visibility and thinks a human in a wetsuit is a seal. The water around the great barrier reef is so clear that there would be little confusion like this.

  • thats how old i was when i got mine

  • im getting mine in england off the cooast of brighton in the south, i know there will be nowhere near as much species of fish but will the water be as clear and bright as it is in australia?

  • Any English Divers like to comment? I've heard good things about diving in the UK, but the sights won't be anything close to a tropical dive! I've only dived in warm waters :)

  • Diving in British waters is great we also have lots of corals 100's of wrecks from the misunderstanding with Germany which we had to explain to them twice.wonderful buddies who are used to to diving in less clarity making them more reliable elsewhere,

  • I want to scuba dive

  • open water is to 18 meters i think.. it done it 2 weeks ago

  • was it difficult? (:

i'm getting mine next month, so i can do it when i travel over christmas.

  • its not difficult..all you have to do is enjoy diving..then do not be afraid...

  • It's mostly common sense stuff... VERY few people fail to get their Open water qualification.

  • scuba diving is really fun

  • sweeeeet!! aww man id love to dive there. whata beautiful place. XD

  • I was 11 when I got certified now im 12

  • have a look at some of my videos from diving down in South Australia. Leafy sea dragons and cuttlefish and stuff

  • how old must to be someone to do scuba dive

  • 10 years old.

  • You need to check with the dive school you would like to learn with but I have read that for PADI the minimum age: 15 years old or 10 for PADI Junior Adventure Diver. I've also seen 12 years minimum noted at some schools. Do a google search for "PADI minimum age"

  • I just got back from Panama City, Florida and looks like you had better water visibility than I did. Looks like you had a great dive! Great video!

  • Thanks. Yes the visibility on the great barrier reef is fantastic. It's a number of miles out from the shore, nearly 40 I think.

  • Hi. I just got my diving certificate. And will have good tips how I can dive. I took the evidence in Norway, so I am well familiar with cold water

    thanks

  • how deep im 12 and when i went scuba diving in cancun and the in structor pulled me down 50 ft and i could not clear my ears

  • im about to take my course....did you ascend so that you can clear your ears?

  • Which part of the video are you asking about? Towards the end of the video we all ascend as it's the end of the dive. Once you get the hang of equalizing your ears you shouldn't need to go up to clear them.

It just takes practice, learn the technique and do it often on the way down. Learn to feel the pressure on your ears that tells you when you need to clear them.

  • this video is great!I am 13 and i have my open water certification,i live in spain

i go diving every saturday,at the costa blanca moraira.alex

  • lucky you!!! i live in England im 12 and i can only wish i could do scuba diving....

  • I had 3 open water students this weekend all aged 12 - you can get certified but with certain restrictions

  • GREAT !

  • Great video Neil! Enjoyed watching that. I've never dived on the Reef, but it's on the cards!

  • what web site did u go to or what number did u call cuz i want to learn to scuba dive and what type certification do u to dive in reefs

  • There are many different scuba diving training centers all over the world. Do some reasearch on the web, e.g. google to find a company near you.

The certification I trained for was the PADI Open Water. This means you can dive in the sea or lakes etc with a buddy.

If you just want to try diving then most places do a 'try dive' or similar where you are guided by an instructor with minimal training required.

  • Excellent video mate. I am 16 years old and am in the UK. I have only ever done the basic PADI Open Water diver course in Cyprus last year. How much experience had you done when you went to the GBR? Also are you in the UK too? If so how much did it cost you? I would love to go to AUS sometime soon, just wandering if it would be possible for me to go where this was taken......hows the nightlife in AUS too? Cheers

  • We did the basic PADI training in a swimming pool in Cairns, then the open water park on the GBR from a liveaboard. It was back in 2000 but the cost was around 300 pounds. Cairns (like many places on the east coast) is an excellent place to visit - lots of British backpackers, lots of night life if you want it, lots of fantastic adventures. Go for it, you'll love it.

  • What a nice vid to take home when done with class!? It looks SO nice, I´m Swedish and have "only" dived in Egypt for a couple of years but have allways dreamed of GBR and its beauty! Thank you for this!

    Regards

    Dave

  • As a rookie did you get allowed to take this footage?

When I took my license the same place, I didn't think they allowed it:(

  • We had a professional underwater videographer shoot this, you can probably tell by the quality, and the fact that I'm in front of the camera and not behind it :)

  • This was a great Video!!! I an writing my comment on a tablet PC. Can you believe it? They ore coming out with a tablet Powerbook for under water computing Next Christmas by Apple

  • Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes Australia is a long way, but it's certainly closer to the US than the UK. Of course if you live in the US then you're not too far from the Caribbean. There's some great Scuba there, e.g. Cozumel off the coast of Mexico.

  • wow, learning to dive on the great barrier reef! amazing! i cant go though :( way too expensive

  • cool
