To make a character smile you could either draw it in any program with a pixelated pencil set on size 1

But back when I made this I saved the mouth of the wink face by only having the face on the layer, then go to the saving options and crop to just the mouth

Then you need to add a picture layer and move it towards the character so it looks like they're smiling

Hope this makes sense
