I know with my current geiger counter, I can detect Am-241 only with the gamma shield open (only detects Beta & Gamma). So either its gamma rays are too weak to penetrate the shield, or its also emitting beta particles (probably from Protactinium-233, which forms from Np-237 which is from Am-241). But either way, beta + gamma is too low to be hazardous.
ADS power generation using thorium is safer than normal fission reactors because they are subcritical and stop when the input current is switched off.
Thorium fuel may be mixed with long-lived wastes from conventional reactors to incinerate them.
I had trouble getting my DRSB-88 to click also, until I took the source out of the smoke detector. Don't worry, it's safe. When placed right on the source I got about 70-80cpm.
you are correct in saying it is safe but just so you know, there is no way it only emits alpha radiation. That may be its main decay but gamma is almost always emitted as well.
I ORDERED MINE AND I CANNOT WAIT and i will make a video of it wen i get it YAY RUSSIA

Where do you get a piece of Thorianite like that? The most I've got my DRSB-88 to click is 25cpm with a smoke detector.

I've got it from eBay site, SoCal Nevada.

Ofcourse the americium from the smoke detector is safe, its only an alpha emitter. Their is no way you can ingest it because its too small to see.

Is that harmful?

Yes, I believe it is.
evansp12 5 years ago
but why does it emit radiation?
xXxmidgexXx 5 years ago
its not harmful.its present in rocks all around us
annyonghaseyo90 5 years ago
Actually thorium radioactivity isent harmfull . But the ingestion of thorium is.

actualy if you abuse it then yes, Its only harmfull if its swallowed. The radiation from Thorianite is mostly Alpha.
