I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.
You can't be a sign language interpreter unless you are University educated. At one time you could just go take the test and then become an interpreter. NOT anymore though. University education is required.
kreiger, you wouldn't be too excited or nervous. You would just get up and do your job and the excitement would hit you afterward. I was the platform interpreter for Vice President Biden on 3 different occasions, and it was a thrill. But the pounding heart and sweaty palms didn't start until after it was over. During the speech you have too much to think about to let your emotions get in the way.
i will admit everytime i see the president stand somewhere and speak i have to locate the interpreter. it made me so proud seeing him get sworn in and see an interpreter as well! i'm very proud of my president the interpreter did an awesome job! i wish to get my skills to that level!!!!!
so how long have you been an interpreter? i've always been inspired to become one... but i have never had much of a chance to learn... how long have you been doing ASL, anyways?

Are you all still excited about Obama, his wife and his VP?

She IS NOT interpreting - she is reading and he is listening and interpreting to anyone in the audience who is deaf. BIG difference!

Oh awesome! If I ever got the chance to interpret on stage for President Obama, I'd probably be to excited/nervous to do the actual interpreting! xD
