A wise man once said, 'never go back'. I watched 'Back to Earth' for five minutes then 'rescued my eyes' before my memories of the real 'Red Dwarf' were sullied.
Thank you for Red Dwarf. I am SO proud to own the whole series on DVD (excluding Back To Earth, which I haven't found yet), and Kryten is my favorite 'noid, next to C-3PO and Mr. Data.
I saw back to earth but i don´t understand why didn´t you film next chapters, because in the 3 chapters in 9 series there isn´t anything solved. And in series 8, why did you put there the alternative end? Because the orignal end is better and then you know how it ends and you will discover why is the space ship RD repaired and why they are only 4 on the ship. But when i think about that, where is the rest of spaceship RD crew? Because lot of them stayed on Red Dwarf and they are not there in 9s.

After seeing the end of series 8 and spending years wondering how on earth the crew were gonna get out of that predicament.. I found myself disappointed to find that we never find out what happened there. It just jumps forward 9 years with very little explanation to what actually happened in the time between. Not the best 3 episodes ever made, but was good to see them back anyway :)
Love the video. The prosthetic make-up for Kryten looks the best it's ever done now. Series 7 (in my view) looked the worst, his suit looked like it was made out of silver foil and for some reason his head looked different somehow.
Series 8 looked better and the purple prison uniform, the Canaries outfit and even the basketball gear seemed to really suit Kryten. :-)
Now the suit and the head, looks as brilliant as it did from Series 3 to 6.

Lots of people have said the same. I didnt think it was particularly good or bad, but I do think it was the jumpstart needed to get it back on track. Apparently, a new series is going to be filmed in 2010, so it did good even if it pissed a fair few fans off.
I just checked and found that it will be released in the USA this October 2009.
I've read some reviews and seems some fans thought it should be a continuation but I am looking forward to watching it either way. It's the people that make the SHOW, and those are good enough reasons for me! CHEERS! =])
i think i can safely say that we want more, back to earth was obviously a test to see if people still liked it and they do, we want more so much more, im not sure but i think BTE had about 2.2 million viewers and im sure it would have got more if it had been shown on the BBC

The problem with Back to Earth is that everyone expected to laugh their ass off straight away, when actualy the episodes were made to have more meaning and plot, plus there are a few gaffs i liked in it as well.

Love the new Red Dwarf, Back to Earth, update! I've watched it three times and it only gets better. Can't wait for the DVD, which I will probably have to buy multiple times as I am bad about leaving the discs out and losing them. Maybe someday you can release it on video. Hope to see more from you guys...10 years is a long time to wait for updates, but I understand....deep space is far away and sometimes these things just take time.

the new specials sucked, danny john jules seemed to struggle playing the CAT, seemed so forced, Cat seemed too normal and on the ball so to speak, not slating the guys as im sure they did what they could without both sides of the writing team but the canned laughter only made dwarf better, its not about being told when to laugh, its about the dwarfers always performing better in front of a live audience, this movie style of filiming just makes it look like its not sure if its a drama or a comedy
Grudgingly i have to agree :( Dont get me wrong, i am an absolute fan of RD. Have been since the beginning, but the special seemed to miss that something, that Red Dwarfness. Maybe it was the ommission of the canned laughter? or the fact that the story was spread over 3 episodes, where we are used to a single episode with all the gags crammed in. I wouldn't go as far as to say it "sucked", maybe the expectation was too great? I still throughly enjoyed it.
It was good, started slow and finished well. it required the audience to have seen Blade Runner.. that was essential and I understand why many didnt like it.. they didnt comprehend the extent this was a homage to Blade Runner, would have been slow otherwise. If I could recommend something to the cast "dont forget this series is primarily based around the love/hate relationship of rimmer and lister.. if you lose the insults you lose the conflict we need in the series.", a very intelligent return.

All the publicity, coverage and the constant promises that Back to Earth was something spectacular made me go giddy with anticipation.
Now that I've seen it all, I can honestly say that I feel cheated. I enjoyed the first two episodes thoroughly and couldn't understand why they were getting such bad, mixed at best, reviews. Tonight I watched the third part and now I understand.
Sorry, but all-in-all, Back to Earth was epic fail. Thanks for nothing, Naylor.

I stumbled across the show back in 1988, and have been a fan ever since. I thought the first new episode was great, the old chemistry is still there. Kat was pretty funny, Dave showed his sensitive side. Its missing Holly though which is a shame, and not having a laughter track takes some getting used to, but all in all a great start. Can't wait till tonights episode.

just watched the first episode just now on dave and as an avid long term red dwarf fan im sad to say they F*cked it up royal. There are recycled jokes and a poor script. I'm not sure i can even bring myself to watch the other two episodes as its written that they are going to be on the set of coronation street (mega lame). This is a sad day for red dwarf.

the new specials sucked, danny john jules seemed to struggle playing the CAT, seemed so forced, Cat seemed too normal and on the ball so to speak, not slating the guys as im sure they did what they could without both sides of the writing team but the canned laughter only made dwarf better, its not about being told when to laugh, its about the dwarfers always performing better in front of a live audience, this movie style of filiming just makes it look like its not sure if its a drama or a comedy

Grudgingly i have to agree :( Dont get me wrong, i am an absolute fan of RD. Have been since the beginning, but the special seemed to miss that something, that Red Dwarfness. Maybe it was the ommission of the canned laughter? or the fact that the story was spread over 3 episodes, where we are used to a single episode with all the gags crammed in. I wouldn't go as far as to say it "sucked", maybe the expectation was too great? I still throughly enjoyed it.

It was good, started slow and finished well. it required the audience to have seen Blade Runner.. that was essential and I understand why many didnt like it.. they didnt comprehend the extent this was a homage to Blade Runner, would have been slow otherwise. If I could recommend something to the cast "dont forget this series is primarily based around the love/hate relationship of rimmer and lister.. if you lose the insults you lose the conflict we need in the series.", a very intelligent return.

All the publicity, coverage and the constant promises that Back to Earth was something spectacular made me go giddy with anticipation.
Now that I've seen it all, I can honestly say that I feel cheated. I enjoyed the first two episodes thoroughly and couldn't understand why they were getting such bad, mixed at best, reviews. Tonight I watched the third part and now I understand.
Sorry, but all-in-all, Back to Earth was epic fail. Thanks for nothing, Naylor.

2. Why is everyone not in the Dwarf anymore, they were in the ship in the end of Series VIII, where are they now?

I stumbled across the show back in 1988, and have been a fan ever since. I thought the first new episode was great, the old chemistry is still there. Kat was pretty funny, Dave showed his sensitive side. Its missing Holly though which is a shame, and not having a laughter track takes some getting used to, but all in all a great start. Can't wait till tonights episode.

how on earth can you say series 7 didn't work? It had some of the most memorable episodes in the shows entire run, stoke me a clipper and beyond a joke being some of my faves.
Don't call people names just because you disagree with their opinion.
Red Dwarf means a lot to me and it was incredible seeing them back again, hell even a poor standard for dwarf (season 8) is better than 90% of the other rubbish that passes for comedy these days

I think the first epiosde was good, come on guys give them a chance after all it has been a decade since they were all together. So far im giving it a 7/10, im sure i'll be giving it higher after tommorow!

just watched the first episode just now on dave and as an avid long term red dwarf fan im sad to say they F*cked it up royal. There are recycled jokes and a poor script. I'm not sure i can even bring myself to watch the other two episodes as its written that they are going to be on the set of coronation street (mega lame). This is a sad day for red dwarf.
