One has to be careful of being too revisionist about the past. Just because there was an etiquette book in the 50's that presented a certain ideal, it does not at all mean it was the norm. We can be very smug about the past and fail to see the injustice in our own society. Are women more liberated now? Or are they simply allowing themselves to be repressed in an entirely new form? (i.e: must be 'super woman' - successful career + mother + ageless skin). Our information age should free us.

This video is a very poor representation of what it would actually be like. The kids would not be running around and having problems getting straightened up. In a healthy family unit the kids should have the discipline equal to what is now expected of a 14 year old. The house probably wouldn't be that messy because let's be honest... It doesn't take 8 hours or more to keep a house tidy. Another problem is that I highly doubt the man was really treated like a king whose kids fawn and serve him.

These old school women were WORTH making your wife. Not like nowadays. The wife showing the husband this level of care wasnt about submission. It was about the fact that he was paying all the damn bills so they treated him with respect and tried to make him comfortable after a long day at the office, or factory, or coal mine.  You women werent suppressed. You were coddled and protected and loved. I guess you'd rather be in a coal mine than the kitchen though eh?

I love old how-to books and have one for wives from the early 1800s. It says never admit to your husband you love him! This is actually great advice. A lot of the recipes are hard to understand because they require things such as oaken casks I do not have easily, but I improvise. Greetings from France via the USA!
