This movie breaks your heart because you know he is suffering from mental trauma from the war AND is an innocent man. If this was about some guy that raped and killed someones grandma, would anyone care?
For anyone who has a sense of humor, there is a 1933 Vitaphone parody of this movie and another early 30s prison movie called 20,000 years in Sing Sing. It is titled "20,000 Cheers for the Chain Gang" and is so funny and also has great music and dancing in the early 30s style.
Paul Muni was a giant star of the 30's and surely the biggest star at Warners and that includes Bette Davis, James Cagney, Errol Flynn. Multi Oscar nominations and a slew of great reviews placed Paul Muni atop the pantheon of Hollywood stars.
This movie is one of the great portrayals Muni gave in his golden decade of great high stardom.
His career deserves review and thanks to YouTube many can see this great artisits work.
Thanks for the tip! I will certainly try to see it. I have been a huge Muni fan for many years. He was simply incredible as Emile Zola, Louis Pasteur, the lead in The Good Earth, and of course Scarface. Given his remarkable chameleon-like ability to disappear into a role, sometimes it's hard to believe it was the same actor giving all of these amazing performances! He was my grandfather's favorite actor as well. Unlike many stars of the period, his performances have not dated one bit.
I have always wanted to see this film, although the breathtaking sanctimoniousness of the cleric (Johnny's brother perhaps?) makes me want to punch him right in the face.
It's a great movie. I picked up the DVD at Big Lots for $3! There was also an HBO exclusive remake of this movie starring Val Kilmer. It was a really good remake too...if only it was available on DVD too. This movie brought awareness to the public regarding how cruel and inhumane the prison chain gang system really was. Deception Corruption, Double Crossing and Solid Acting are all in this movie. Pick it up if you can
lol thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard. Its ghetto to upload a movie lol then you might wanna say its ghetto to upload videos period. So then i guess waxxfree, hankquinlan and hollywoodclassic etc are all ghetto seeing as they upload tons of classic movies? Oh and this movie is already up anyway so you might wanna take your clip down cos its making you look ghetto. But your right its your opinion
Sigh... you're missing the point. I want people to go out and buy the movie to support studios that keep these types of movies available. It's as simple as that. When you watch a trailer, or catch a clip of a movie on a talk show that interests you, you take the initiative to go out and see the movie. In this case, I post my favorite scenes in hopes that it might get people to go out and buy the movie. If just one person buys it then great.
They were trying awfully hard to get him back into that factory, lol

The best ending of any movie ever made---it took the audiences breath away and they walked out of the theater talking about prison reform.
What planet is Whiskey Lovin hark from or is he just being true to his name?

1. Because I'm already taking a chance by posting a "clip" of the movie.
2. I think it's kinda ghetto when people post an entire movie on youtube. Especially classic movies.
Just my opinion.
