  • Learning Poetry 2010 & 2011

  • Taking a class can be a good thing, but it's not always necessary. It depends on the individual. What I would say is this: read, read, read. The world is full of would-be poets who do not read poetry. It is in my view nearly impossible to write poetry of significance without a pretty extensive knowledge of what has already been written. It's also important, in the beginning, to imitate others. Of course, nobody is going to publish you if you try to imitate Victorian poets though.

  • All information is good information: you have to filter through the info, and utilize your knowledge.

  • I hate it when people say that you can only learn certain creative skills by taking classes in those subjects.

In my mind it´s very very simple:

if you want to be an artist - be it!

You cannot learn & discover your own unique artistic voice if you just imitate the thing others have done.

Take inspiration but don´t even try to copy anyone.

  • All great suggestions to which I'd like to add ... don't assume that you can't write poetry - give it a try. Choose a topic or theme that interests you. Get a few words onto paper (or computer screen). Even if you aren't sure where you intend going you'll probably soon find ideas start suggesting themselves. When you've done a first draft substitute rarer words for ones that are overused. Try to think of better lines for weaker ones. Set yourself a time limit (you won't want to stop). Have fun!
