i ended up using a solid black gotton scarf i laying around that i never use. cut about 6-7 inches of that and wrapped it around the sticks and used masking tape. works just as well and saved about 9 bucks and a trip to home depot :D
Glad I saw this last night... I was finally getting around to doing something about drum pad noise, and didn't know what I was going to do. A little double-sided foam tape and electrical tape later - which I already had lying around - problem fixed for free. Good idea.
while i agree that it's QUITE a bit reduced in the way of sound.... with them dulled down THAT much, i wonder how that will affect the speed drumming of harder faster songs on a difficulty settings say.... harder than medium.
Hey maybe you'll make your EL sets last longer instead of using gum rubber.
Just tested this and it's awesome. My EL still picks up double hits, though I had to improvise. I was short on cash (real short) so I used thinner (width-wise, not size) stripping so I had to do it 3 times per drum stick to cover as much as of the stick head as with his.
I will tell you that on EL kits, anything thicker than 1/4" will start to affect your hit registry (LOL FPS term). I've heard from ScoreHero that using 1/4" gum rubber made them drop notes, but once they toned down to 3/16" or even 1/8", there's still good rebound and silencing effect with increase in sensitivity on ELs.
I've tried various thicknesses (one wrap, 2 wraps, etc) and they still drop notes equally bad.
i dont think you would want too, ions are very good pads, i got them the day they came out, if you do this drum stick mod, when you hit the pads the sticks will go like 100 feet over your head
@titoman767 im with you man. id just stick some real marashmallows on then id pour chocolate syrup all over them and put sprinkles and a cherry on top. you could spray whipped cream all over the pads to help you focus your aim too.
ive seen something like that at gamestop which i would prefer because (instant gradification) plus you wont need to wait in the mail for it but either way it still works
You obviously aren't playing on expert, so my question is this. By loosely securing the weather stripping on, how well do they stay on when the sticks really take a beating? For example, will they fly off halfway through songs like Everlong or Run to the Hills?
whats even better: get the rockband drum pad silencers( you can get them online or at gamestop for 15$) and just that alone increases sensitivity and decreases noise. but for extra sensitivity and even less noise put socks over the pads and it works perfect, no problems whatsoever . and it sounds pretty cool
I prefer Harmonix silencers, as shown on my channel. When I tried this mod, the sound dampening wasn't as much as it was on the video. The Harmonix silencers won't wear out like these, too.
the only thing Harmonix does is make people buy more shit from them. "ohh your drums are too loud? well we can sell you this." "drums arent sensitive enough?, we can sell you this"
its like they created problems just to get more money
Does that change the fact that they work better, in my opinion? No. Activision is more of a money-grubber than Harmonix is. Do you realize that for months, you could RMA _any_ part of your Rock Band kit, with or without a warranty or receipt?
no i am just saying that they are smart for doing that. i dont see Neversoft coming out with aftermarket drum parts. but Harmonix does. II was being sarcastic because yes they sell great things. but they are sometimes cocky about it.
It's economics. If you play to FC, then you'll want to spend the extra money, or even buy the more expensive ION set. But if you just play for fun on medium, say, sensitivity won't be an issue, and a $60 set with some flaws will be completely acceptable.
Chh REAL GAY FUCK THIS MAKES MORE SENSE MY ASSHOLE FUCK CHEAP ASS WHY DONT U JUST GO AND BUY GOODWOOD MODS DRUM HEADS OR THE FUCKING ION KIT AND IM NOT AN IDIOD U FUCK!
mallets are HARD. They look the same, but they aren't squishy, they are like playing with a big rock on the end of your stick. It's not even close to the same.
there are a ton of different types of mallets... ones made for cymbals that are super squishy and fuzzy, to ones that are made for tympani which are a harder felt.. you can also buy sticks with rubber ends on them made for practicing on hard surfaces without alot of noise...
This is a simple mod and it actually works, i used some tape and jus some foam padding, its the easiest way of reducing noise, and dependin on what you use the sticks still bounce well.
pad modding is better. this will just mess up registering the hits and break your combo. i've tried it and it sucked......big time. but ofc i didnt think so at first
