it is a cray trap. but they do catch small fish . i doubt the pike that you imagine this would catch would be much use for anything other than bait anyway. its still illegal to fish for cray fish in n.ireland as there are no signals here just the native crays . i have no idea how the laws are in the republic

you dont make eel or cray traps out of 2inch sq mesh, unless your fishing for lobster and conger! " bit lost in Royal canal" LOL, I have found a few cray traps also and I leave them alone, Actuall one of my mates sets cray traps on Grand canal and is very suscessful, its good to remove signal cray they devour fish eggs and our native cray, Did you know that king fishers depend on our common cray in hard times of high water..........
@eirefishing not 2 inch mesh but that appears to be 1x2" not 2"sq. 1x2 squares are plenty small enough to catch small fish like eels and cray fish. but arnt cray fish illegal to fish for period in ireland? i am a game fisherman so to me traps are no fun. either way i wouldnt suggest touching someone elses traps. idk how it os over there but in the US trappers are known for being hot headed.
