I came to the US from Mexico, in 1968, at the age of three and I come from a generation that balanced the two cultures just fine. I don't understand why learning English is such a big deal. By the way, a lot of what is spoken by recent immigrants from Mexico is a poor excuse for the beautiful Spanish language spoken in the Americas.

Being spanish speaking is not a handicap. Back in the 1960's educators did not want the deaf to sign as I was discouraged from learning sign language. Being deaf is a handicap, not the spanish speaking. Why are some colleges limiting their foreign language courses to just spanish? Such colleges do not offer sign language courses, just spanish.
