I came to the US from Mexico, in 1968, at the age of three and I come from a generation that balanced the two cultures just fine. I don't understand why learning English is such a big deal. By the way, a lot of what is spoken by recent immigrants from Mexico is a poor excuse for the beautiful Spanish language spoken in the Americas.

In Spain for example, Spaniards have a huge problem with people from Latin-American countries, they come to Spain and start to live like they live in their countries; music on the street and barbecue, laud speakers on the walk way and speak Spanish improperly so makes it so difficult for a Spaniard to understand them. Most of this immigrants are from a very poor background and do not want to be part of the society. Similar to what happens here in USA.

Most people that emigrated from Latin-America to Spain seeking work are uncultured, not all but the percentage of uneducated ones is huge. When they leaved their countries to reside in another country they bring with them their customs and “barrio” behavior. Being spanish speaking is not a handicap. Back in the 1960's educators did not want the deaf to sign as I was discouraged from learning sign language. Being deaf is a handicap, not the spanish speaking. Why are some colleges limiting their foreign language courses to just spanish? Such colleges do not offer sign language courses, just spanish.
