The question that will truly humble even the stoutest minds is this: If this universe was created by a creator, then who created the creator? And then, who created this creator? Ad Infinitum...
The visible cosmos is recently regarded a being over 90B light years in radius. If light propagation is the speed-limit for everything, how could the Big Bang expand the cosmos to this size in just 14B years? The Big Bang is a creation theory. Isn't it instead more plausible that the cosmos has no limits in all spatial & temporal dimensions? If eternal, it had no beginnning. Perhaps, cosmic expansion is just a local event which we cannot measure or even detect beyond its horizon.
Universe being 90B light-years across but only 14B light-years old? Actually that is among the questions scientists themselves are trying to know the answer to.
I think the speculation of "universe being eternal" is based on common lack of astronomical knowledge. It is well known within learned scientific community that the universe did have an origin; the origin having zero volume and infinite mass.
Moreover, some interesting signs about the origin of universe in a more than 1400 years old book called Quran:
"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" (21:30)
Islam is one of the few large religions that actually encourages curiosity and learning. If all religions were like islam i would be okay with religion.
LOL, turning in his grave to be a faithful believer?
Anyway, I respect Carl for his work on astronomy. He had his right to have his own conclusions from the explored knowledge while I have my own right of conclusion.
Please stop portraying Carl Sagan as a symbol of disbelief or a religion-hater.
@iTruth Carl Sagan was at best an agnostic. However, watch "pale blue dot", i wouldn't suggest he is a religion "hater". Yet, he is very cautious of it and all the grief and misery it has contributed to humanity. I do not see him as a hater of anything. Yet he did not (from what i understand) respect religion. I have a question to you seeing as you are a religious person, why did a god, allah, zeus, whatever, create a univerese and galaxy and our own sun, which will eventually die?
Your questions have been answered in Qur'an already. It is only that people do not read themselves and keep assuming about it. Thousands of people who used to have assumptions about Qur'an and about Allah, they studied Qur'an and then couldn't help but to become Muslims. Need I remind again that they used to have same kind of prejudices and misconceptions about Islam BEFORE they studied Qur'an themselves.
I have been trying to buy a copy of the Qu'ran but to no luck. Could you possibly refer me to where my question has been answered. In particular the one about dying suns etc. it would be much appreciated. I will check out that site you have pointed me to.
I was impressed with concept, script and narration supported by just the right background and visual material. One comment though-bias was evident in the choice of one word early in the narrative - "stuff" - whilst overall I concluded the narrater/writer presented a fair view, initially I thought: "Oh, boy, just another one eyed view" Nevertheless, I am impressed - to the narrator/author - I say: "very professional". I would be honoured to meet you.
It's only frustrating because we'll never meet anyone in another galaxy. No matter what. WE WILL NEVER MEET ANYONE FROM ANOTHER GALAXY. The distances are just too far.
Big Bang Theory works on the premise that there was something there before. No scientist ever suggested that it came from nothing. They mystery is of course what led to the big bang. I am not expert and I am sure there are theories about. Having said that, you are correct in a way; nothing can come from nothing. That is logical!
It is interesting to note that the scientist who originally proposed the 'big bang theory' was named Fr. Georges Lemaître - a Roman Catholic priest from Belgian.
iTruth, I enjoyed this video, and am sorry that it's become a forum for theological debate. The photos Hubble has given us are a breathtaking glimpse out into the universe outside of our galactic neighborhood. To think that even as recently as 100 years ago, few could imagine that we would ever see the universe in such majesty. From a creator, or an inconceivably powerful burst of energy and matter, our universe is truly something beautiful and wonderful to behold.
Those are beautiful pictures and instill a sense of wonder. But it doesnt necessarily follow how small [insignificant] we are or that alien life is a given. There is absolutely no evidence for alien life. When I see it, Ill believe it.
truly inspiring, this is one of the great examples as to why one day I want to become an astronomer. Understanding the way the universe holds secrets of life and other worlds.
This aint anything remarkable to me! If some galaxies are 78 billion light years away, then it must have taken light 78 billion years to reach the earth (and Hubble) that these galaxies may be seen. Now if the big bang is (purported to be) about 15 billion years old and all these galaxies came from it, how come they are 78 billion light years distant? Is it possible for a child of 100 years of age to be born from its 24 year old mother? (i.e.can a child be older than its parents? It beats me.
God is all-powerful so creating something like the universe should be relatively easy, when your all-powerful doing great things is just as easy as doing easy things.
Now i'm not trying to toot my own horn but....
I on the other hand can do a spiral with my tongue.
"He Who created the seven heavens in layers. You will not find any flaw in the creation of the All-Merciful. Look again -do you see any gaps? Then look again and again. Your sight will return to you dazzled and exhausted!"
Qur'an, 67: 3-4
And yet all of it said to be nothing but a grain of mustard in the ocean compared to the Divine Throne
Just as it seems that blank blackness in sky is empty and not full of galaxies , the empty space around us is filled with energy we normally cant see.I do not know how much energy , but i might be MASSIVE amount :D
"He Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of ((Allah)) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?" - The Holy Quran 67:3
"Again turn thy vision a second time: (thy) vision will come back to thee dull and discomfited, in a state worn out." - The Holy Quran 67:4
as much knowledge i gained in my life, what we are seeing is the lower heaven, Allah created 7 heavens and each one is bigger than the previus one to unimaginable sizes..like a ring in a desert then the second heaven is like a ring in a desert compare to the 3rd heaven and so on..it is beyond human imaginations !!!
We`re just living at a point in time in some universal cycle, we don`t quite know how it (big bang) started, and we`re not quite sure how it ends, and starts again or whatever, there are a few theories, but my point is that just because WE don`t know the answer it doesn`t mean, by default, a God did it!

79 billion is just as far as we have been able to see... same as saing the universe is 23 bill years old becouse that how far we were able to see and calculate end to end to the center point and figure thats how old the universe is.

Translation of a small chapter containing only 4 verses is complete and perfect definition if you think about it:
112:1 "Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;"
112:2 "Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;"
112:3 "He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;"
112:4 "And there is none like unto Him."
(Quran, chapter 112)
