A judge should decide after a full investigation whether or not telecom companies violated the law. If they have not, they have nothing to worry about.

pat - It was the GOP who torpedoed the PAA extension, not the Democrats. The plain truth is that you guys are willing to "sacrifice American lives" over amnesty for the telecoms. That's a stance that will certainly win some elections -- for the Democrats!
The Democrats have four years to hammer out this issue out w/the Republicans, and they have done nothing but drag their feet on it. The Senate passed a comprehensive bill, with a significant bipartisan majority, and the House Dems refused to sign off on it. Although, I'm sure they'll ultimately end up caving, just as they always do.
Then there are plenty of ways to compromise on telecom amnesty. For example, allow the law suits to go forward, but cap the potential liability. Or allow the secret FISA court to review the cases. Why does the GOP refuse to negotiate even an inch on this? Most people just want judicial review. Punishing the telecoms is secondary.
Besides, FISA is quite clear. Qwest refused to comply with illegal requests and lost a $200 million government contract. Why punish Qwest and not Verizon or AT&T?

What would "winning the war" look like? Would all those dead people come back to life? Would the trillions come back into our Treasury? Would our jobs come back from China?

The Administration *admits* it broke the law. Their claim is simply that the law doesn't apply to the Presidency. People are going after the telecoms, who also broke the law, according to the Administration (which is why they're trying to give them amnesty, right?), simply because they're the one set of criminals they *can* reach.

Bush had a CIA memo titled "Al Qaeda determined to strike in US," describing their plan to fly planes into buildings in lower Manhattan, almost a month before 9/11. He did nothing. The CIA, alarmed, sent someone to brief Bush personally, who however continued to ignore them, because he was obsessed with Iraq!
We have more than enough covert intelligence. If Bush had been even slightly interested, we could have avoided 9/11. More spying won't fix an incompetent Administration.

The Senate passed a comprehensive bill, with a significant bipartisan majority, and the House Dems refused to sign off on it. Then there are plenty of ways to compromise on telecom amnesty. For example, allow the law suits to go forward, but cap the potential liability. Or allow the secret FISA court to review the cases. Why does the GOP refuse to negotiate even an inch on this? Most people just want judicial review. Punishing the telecoms is secondary.
Besides, FISA is quite clear. Qwest refused to comply with illegal requests and lost a $200 million government contract. Why punish Qwest and not Verizon or AT&T?

I guess you were very angry about that provision at the time then?
The bill would pass, because the 200 republicans are lemmings who always vote with the leader, and about 20 dems would defect. If there were any actual independent republicans it would fail.

So what? The Senate Republicans have been filibustering at record pace, meaning bills that would have majority support don't pass until they get 60 votes.
How big a majority supported the SCHIP bill that Bush Vetoed? Where is your complaint about that?

Unfortunately for your argument, it was the Republicans who forced the bill to expire. The Democrats tried to push a bill extending the act; the Republicans blocked it without debate. Now the Republicans are walking out.
The Republicans and the Republicans alone are responsible for this act lapsing. They are the Party of Fear; "If you do not let us break the law as we please, you'll all die."
Sorry, no one believes the Party of Fear any more.

If the Democrats are right then why not let the house vote on the Senate passed bill? The reason is simply. The Democratic leadership knows it would pass. They would rather let the law expire then vote on it.

Thank you for parroting the GOP talking points. Now for the truth.
The House passed its own bi-partisan version of the bill without Telcom immunity several months ago. The Senate didn't like that bill and passed their own WITH Telcom immunity.
Because there are 2 differing bills, those differences are supposed to be resolved in a conference committee. The GOP is trying to thwart that process and force the House to pass the Senate bill.
The GOP are authoritarian fascists.

They wanted to waste time on subpoenas that we go no where and do nothing. They think national security is something to play political games with.
