@mrfnknowitall Shihan's version is just rope and a pair of foam or solid rubber balls - choose your density based on what you can handle hitting you! I think the first clip in the Suruchin playlist should tell you how.
Just finished making a practice suruchin out of 550 chord and some tennis balls - I expect to have some bruises to show for this, but it is great to get some practice with more than just the standard 3 or 4 kobudo weapons. Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone.
I have two tgapes of Tonfa and I have stuided then for over 5 years and I enjoy his teaching via video. I also have all the videos from Master Bolz and she is also awsome. I never rank with them but I studied her tapes for the last 10 years and been to several seminars in japan. Great systems! I guess I should rank I still wear my white belt when I go to japan they call me the master white belt as a joke. lol
@ashigaruhem Not exactly a parenthetical equivalent: suruchin can be thrown like bolo to trip someone up in the rope, but were originally made with a rock on each end, so they were mostly swung as Shihan demonstrates. Using authentic versions would be very dangerous, so he has rubber balls in place of the rocks, and common rope instead of the original hemp stuff fisherman preferred.
Please people, do not disrespect the arts. If you have nothing nice to say about a certain martial art form then dont look at it. What you are looking at here is Martial Arts and one of its forms taught by a professional. Any of you should be soo lucky to learn from a master of martial arts.
Good controlled matching, but that guy has to learn how to evade better.his opponent always attacked in a straight line,he should have circled around him.If someone uses HSING YI YOU USE PA KUA .
And the point I am making is that, since Shihan also teaches iaido, he would be the most likely person to disable a swordsman with a suruchin *in real life*, not the relaxed environment of a demo video.
Meh, people will usually see an instructional video as an actual fight instead of trying to learn something like they're supposed to. Either that or the feel the need to validate themselves by undermining others. Hooray for overly pugilistic persons on the internet? o.O
Pretty much anything can be used as a weapon man :). Shaolin monks will throw sewing needles through glass in training(apparently), not the big kind either lol :)
yeah i was just kinda tryin to point out that alot of the simplest things can be used as weapons, in fact im sure you know this but many of the okinawan weapons on this channel originated as farming tools :)
i practice hitting posts and whatnot. but were i live noboy really teaches this stuff. i try to swing them accross my midsection and rarely go off to the side incase i need recovery ;) i like the suruchin its similar to the manriki. u know u can grapple with it aswell? chokes armbars and flips n whatnot. and u make grat vids. very educational to us.
i misstyped i meant to say cant find much exept jugglers. when i see guys throwing them in the air and such i just click off most of the time. im pretty exp with the chucks. byt by no means a master. ill send u a vid if i ever get on on here.
If you do freestyle, don't bother - I don't watch any of that, because it is little more than juggling to me. I only am interested in the original Okinawan style.
And please don't call nunchaku "chucks", it's disrespectful.
do u use a manriki chain hempev ? i can find much on it exept jugglers. my chain is about 3 and a half feet i can do the arm whip thing and somtimes off my leg. self tought from kung fu movies
No, this is an advance kobudo weapon and I am a beginner. Since one's ability is based on how good one's sensei is, I would never try to be self-taught. Now, juggling, that I would learn on my own, but I just don't want to!
I like suruchin training.

@jiggahippo Staying humble keeps you centered - I think that is what works for both Shihan Nishiuchi and Shihan Bolz!

Isn´t the suruchin rather dangerous?
I mean, it looks rather easy to get it all tangled up around oneself.
AllOfUsLoveSpam 1 year ago
@AllOfUsLoveSpam So you worry about hurting yourself? A student's respect for a weapon is good, fear is not.

very interesting i'm going to have to make my own suruchin and learn how to use it ^_^ it seems like a very versatile weapon

If that was a real fight, the guy with the bola, would be dead if he missed the first strike.
crypter27 2 years ago
Why propose "if this was a real fight" arguments during an instructional video?
hempev 2 years ago
I was talking about the sword part!
crypter27 2 years ago
Still a "what if"...

The point I'm trying to make,if it was a real sword, the guy with bola would of been hacked to peices.

That's what *we* are taught: learn as much as you can in formal weapons training and you can use anything in an "informal" situation!

Sorry, don't have any more - suruchin doesn't even have an original kata like other kobudo weapons, so I don't know of any bunkai (analysis).
