The movie version of the Phantom is Fabio with a mask. Butler can't sing and its obvious he's there for his good looks. The original novel wasn't a harlequin romance. The phantom is described in horrid details as looking like a living corpse. Crawford's performance is infinitely better. Not only is his voice perfect for the character but he plays it as the song suggests, "A gargoyle...carcass...a man who seems a beast but who secretly dreams of beauty."

I have the the privilege of seeing the Phantom of the Opera on August 22, and I'm so so so excited! The cast is with John Cudia as the Phantom and Trista Moldovan as Christine.
Michael Crawford is the only Phantom for me. He was my very first Phantom in the CD, and then Thomas James O'Leary was my first live one. But Michael will always be my Phantom.

Michael isn't my favorite Phantom. There's just something about his voice... I don't know. I prefer High Panaro and Howard Mcgillin.
He is a great actor though, and he got the creepy part of the Phantom right. :) just my opinion

Read the book by Gaston Leroux! It's awesome and though the musical does not follow the story exactly, the characters are still the same! :D
