  • Can anyone argue that Neil is the greatest of all time????

  • Did I really just stumble onyo the legends youtube page?

  • I came.

  • Im 143 years old and Rush are my favorite band.

  • Perfect sound !!

  • Somewhere in Texas some cows are missing their bells.

  • More Cowbell!!!

  • on 04:30 he started to go in that prechorus part, you see he started to crash on his other hihat.... thank god he is afterall a human! :D

  • Damn,he has that snare raised SO high!

  • That piccolo snare sounds so badass.

  • Hate when people from my school say Danny Carey and Travis Barker are better than Neil Peart and John Bonham And Keith Moon. They can go fuck themselves. Who agrees?

  • @TYMCGOUGH Well, that's sad...

  • @TYMCGOUGH Danny Carey yes, as he is a discipline of Peart, Bonham, and Moon. Travis Baker is just a emo/hiphop poser just trying to be cool, he knows nothing about real drumming like the other musicians.

  • @lordertai Totally agree..For a poser free drumming community

  • @TYMCGOUGH Danny is comparable...but Barker is just Dannys housekeeper or his maid...hes nod good enought to wipe his dogs ass with the tongue....The latter ones are untouchable but tool music is on another level than Barker....

  • o dislikes. the way it should be

  • Neil is good...but he's definitely no Lars.

    lol

  • @dwilmer7 Lars BLOWS!

  • @dwilmer7 are you retarded lmao

  • pure epicness

  • Okay, cut the awesome into multiple parts ...

He Makes the lyrics for RUSH,

He can play any percussion instrument in existence,

    He can play classical,

He Is the best drummer who lived,

And his sound is meaningful. unlike fake drummers like Lars ulbitch, or justin beaver.

  • @machinamanification Fyi, Justin Bieber isn't a drummer... :P

  • @JonasOfSweden

You must not have seen him then...

Look up his drumming then smart ass

  • @machinamanification I personally wouldn't class that as proper drumming

  • @machinamanification hey, hey... dont talk shit about anything metallica... lars is a perfectly fine drummer. i also find your reasoning a bit... i dunno... unreasonable.

  • @17bdawg

Oh quit shitting yourself. Lars has no clue how to right drumming rhythms. yes is a good robot at up and down motions on a drum set. but he isnt nearly as fluent as buddy rich, or omg Niel Peart.

  • @machinamanification lars has good rthythm and does to beats that may SEEM very simple, but they are acctually not so simple. not to mention the stamina it takes to play songs such as "...And Justice For All and "Battery" and if you didnt know this but Lars is purposley un-fluent, metal requires a very strait, sharp, fast, robot style drumming where jazz drummers such as Neil Peart are fluent and flow more smoothly. you cant compare the two (Lars and Neil) because they have opposite technique

  • Seriously, how does every video of every drummer on YouTube end up having at least 3 comments from some person defending Lars Ulrich and his abysmal drumming? Utter dump.

  • @17bdawg

Yes i can. It is like a comparing a cat and a dog. one has retractable claws, and one doesn't. one has more muscle but one is more fluent. As a percussionist i CAN say that Lars ulrich is a good drum player, but Neil Peart is a superior DRUMMER.

  • MAN he hits them hard

  • this is probably the best his toms have ever sounded to me. i want to say that it's the coated heads? i wouldn't know if he changed the tuning, mics, or eq though. anyone know or agree?

  • Please, I beg you, don't like this comment unless Neil Peart should truly top the lists.

  • I saw Rush last night for the first time (I'm 13). It changed my life. Neil is my hero.

  • @Drummerkid74 I remember seeing the drum solo from "A Show of Hands" when I was 10, I was hooked on the drums. He's my hero too

  • @Drummerkid74 Let me restate that statement in my own way.

I saw Rush a month ago for the second time. (I'm 12.) Geddy, Alex, and Neil are all my heroes.

  • @jerrythepotato1919 Dang man you're lucky. The only reason I said just Neil was my hero was that this is a video of him drumming, and I play the drums myself. They are all 3 heroes to me, I commented specific to this video though ;)

  • @Drummerkid74 Lol yeah I just always like to mention all of them on every Rush video, even if it just relates to either drums, guitar or bass, but we all still love them all and you know it!

  • @Drummerkid74 me. too.

  • @Drummerkid74 I saw him once in my life as well. Changed my life. Oh that live Subdivisions performance... I listened to Rush for the first time when I was 7yo. I'm 25.

  • I love how earlier in the D.V.D he says: "I put in the cowbells to make it more cartoony and goofy."

  • So cool to watch Neil play . . He is phenomenal

  • who would think that the words in the lyrics would have so much more relevance 15 years later with the internet being everywhere with so much information being sent everywhere. The Borg collective here we come. Resistance is futile? No resistance is not futile.

  • I love this song!

  • Damn, this song's the shit

  • wow he is good but im not suprised to say that bout neil peart, wtf is on his head?

  • @superslayerguy Well, first he has his traditional skullcap, to keep sweat out of his eyes, then a pair of heaphones to hear the song, and a pad under the phones so they fit snugly on his head without moving.

  • Love the song. The only problem with "virtuality" was that it was a 30s-1:00 too long. For some reason the length did not fit this song well. Unlike other RUSH songs, this one becomes stressful to listen to after the ~4-4:30 mark.

  • More cowbell!

  • greatest drummer ever

  • Rush's whole career they deserved better audio engineers...

  • He was really feeling this performance, makes me wonder why they haven't included it on their live show, at least since the T4E tour, but idk if they played it then.

As a Rush fan I suppose I'm predisposed to preferring Neil, but i think he has so much going for him that i take for granted. The emphasis on/in which he strikes the note and the motion in between makes for such a flowing performance. You get reminded of these things after watching so many drummers whose emphasis is speed or chops.

  • That grown man, that other grown man. Send your drumming opinions round the world. Save your message on a modem. And throw it in a sea of Youtube replies!

  • interesting how high his snare is in relation to where he sits... i don't think it used to be like that..

  • \m/RUSH\m/ my favorite band in the world!!!!

  • I haven't seen many vids where he uses a traditional grip. I wonder why he chose to use it on this track.

  • @DacamoSounds He used traditional grip for all the songs on Test for Echo after studying with Freddie Gruber.

  • That piccolo sounds like a gunshot!

  • does anyone know why those cymbals dont have the brand on them?

  • @locoflaw They're Neil Peart's signature Paragon cymbals by Sabian. They have logos, but the style of them is very minimalist as the color of the logos is almost the same color as the cymbal really.

  • @TheDorian66 "A Work in Progress" was made before Neil switched to Sabian, so I believe the cymbals in this video are Zildjians (top china being Wuhan). As to why they don't have any brands, I think that's just a quirk of Neils: he doesn't like them. Zildjian obliged by giving him logo-free cymbals, while Sabian created the very subtle logos used on their Paragon line. :)

  • This is the best cover I've seen yet. :P

  • @seganerd89 its not a cover its the drummer from rush

  • @zdrummaboy WOOOOOOWWwww talk about buzzkill.

  • best drummer ever. i dont even want to start writing all the things i could say about how amazing he IS I LOVE NEIL, AND ALEX, AND GEDDY!!!! RUSH!!!!!!

  • man this guy plays so fucking amazing still, like lets face it he is aging but its not slowing him down..at all..fuckin living legend man, by far the most creative and versatile drummer ive had the chance to listen to, and Rush is awesome..

  • Afff isso é de mais meu deus !!!!

  • What was that cymbal between his ride and his china that he hits alternately with the ride... it sounds like a locked hi-hat Is that what it is?

  • @jayfeller it is a static hihat. it frees up hand and stick pattern while obtaining a different textured sound. peace.

  • i wish he used hat sidesnare more often

  • i nearly crapped myself when he hit his aux snare! sounds like a gunshot!

  • "an apprentice makes something easy look complicated while a master makes the impossible look easy"

    -Neil Peart

  • @billpeart And the amazing thing is, as modest and humble as he is, he's referring to himself as the apprentice. Big contrast to the number of people I've met who seem to think otherwise.

  • Comment removed

  • Haha, he moves with such grace. It's like nothing to him. I was going to mention the Piccolo snare as well, it sounds phenomenal.

  • Neil Peart is the patron Saint of Drummers!

  • I have this DVD...This was recorded in 1996 or '97 and he was still playing Zildjians then. I believe all of his crashes were A series medium crashes. Arranged from left to right, if I can recall correctly, they are 20", 18", 16" and 18" in that order. For whatever reason, Peart has never had screenprinted logos on his cymbals...not sure if he ordered them from Zildjian this way, or if he just had his tech scrub them off.

  • Hey Mullen,

    Do you have totem?

    i can't find it

    thanks

  • he use's a lot of the traditional grip in "Test For Echo"

  • Neil makes it look so easy. IT"S NOT!

  • Mr. Peart is my favorite musician... and I'm a guitarist! I love watching him play. I can't play a lick of drums to save my life, but I'm fascinated when I watch a great drummer. I think I can actually see the influence Freddy Gruber had on his technique compared to older videos of him playing. I wish I could find more Rush songs with the camera trained only on him (no offense to Geddy and Alex... I love them too)!

  • that song has some awesome riffs by alex lifeson, the lyrics have aged considerably, though since the internet, more than the big sensation it was in the 90's has become part of our lives

  • If Neil keeps on practising maybe one day he'll be as good as Travis Barker ;) Just kidding. Great sounding drums and great drumming, as always.

  • Amazing! I picked up a bass in '77 after I saw Geddy and chris Squire, I put it down...

  • does anyone know what crash models from zildjian he is using here, i want some

  • @nhdrummer2112 I believe that they will be his signature series "Paragon" made by Sabian ;)

  • @daveydinodave I have this DVD...it was recorded in 1996 or '97 and he was still playing Zildjians then. For whatever reason, he has never had screenprinted logos on his cymbals. I don't know if he ordered them from Zildjian that way, or had his tech scrub them off. @nhdrummer2112 If I recall correctly, they are all A Series medium crashes and arranged from left to right are 20", 18", 16" and 18" respectively.

  • @jajdodds: NEP was and still is a guy who doesn't believe in logos of any kind. You will never se him wearing a shirt with a Nike or Adidas logo.

Sabian worked closely with him to create the paragon logo, as he was originally against the line having any markings. So Sabian came up with the logo that is very minimalist.

Somewhere on the web you can google his drums and there are picture collections of his kits over the years, photos from promotional packaging, with a setup list.

  • lol if u look really closely, the nut on his middle crash is slowly twisting itself off

  • Incredible...flying trough space and cyberspace...love it....C.

  • Another great from a band that I would've expected nothing less.

    -A die-hard Rush fan

  • i didnt mean it in a bad way cause i do the same thing

  • neils head moves weird everytime he hits the snare lol

  • @VenumosFate

    Hahahaha :D

  • amazing !! a drum legend !!

  • Travis Barker is better- just kidding!! I agree with ik4790- Neil is a very tasteful drmmmer & doesn't overpower the band, yet his drum parts are very melodic & difficult- not easy to do, which is why he is my favourite drummer.

  • I never realized how complex this song was. I'm glad I was ignorant up until now, this is awesomeeee! :)

  • its pretty simple i think

  • I believe the thing that makes Neil great ( and this comes from a hardcore neil peart fan) is not so much his technique, altough its far advanced than most amateur drummers out there, cause there are more virtuosic and technical drummers than neil. I believe the thing that makes him a great drummer is the TASTE to do his drumming, his arrangements, and stuff, for every song. He doesnt overplay, but he can make the drums oustand without compromising the song or the drum´s task keeping tempo.

  • Yeah, he incorporates the drums amazingly as part of the song, rather than just simply backing the beat. And rarely ever uses the same beat or fill in multiple songs

  • @Mullenfreek I do think Test for Echo is one of their bests ...maybe the best after moving pictures..Neil became so tasty when he started using the single bass kit

  • @OfivetwoekVeeDee It's a single bass drum, but he still uses a double bass pedal.

  • I think that what sets all three members of Rush (Neil Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson) apart from other musicians.

  • @lk4790 BINGO! There are drummers out there who are technically better, but few can match his unique style and nuances

  • @lk4790 you are exactly right about that ,no one could have said it better!you hit the hammer on the head with a nail on that one my friend...you must be a drummer or a beater with good rhythm.why don't you beat up yourself up some more and show the world your technique on your self without compromising the tempo...

  • @lk4790 I agree, they all do that, there is a video on here somewhere of Alex's amp taking a dump. You actually have to listen to notice its gone. Each instrument stands out so much, yet is so subtle. I guess that why I have heard of Rush being called the ultimate musicians band.

  • Brilliantly said!

  • @lk4790 Couldn't agree more. I've always said the greatest drummers have the gift of knowing when NOT to play.

  • @lk4790 you got that right there is no other michael jordan nor other michael jackson nor there is no other niel peart!!!!tally ho!!

  • @lk4790 that is true, because he makes you pay attention to the drums in each rush song

  • @lk4790 i completely agree. so many great musicians compromise the songs with their virtuosity (if that's a word). les claypool of primus as an example.

neil doesn't do that though. rush are great!

  • @lk4790 Actually had a world record for the world's largest drum set. But with him I wouldn't doubt it, great drummer. I would like to bring Rush out of the shadows that the world casts on them but thats close to impossible because they portray what the "rock and roll" life should be, not like those other asses (well some of the other bands are asses but theres few like Rush out there to be honest, and the ones that are talented and clean are also largely ignored, seeing a pattern there.)

  • @lk4790

Yeah, he isnt like a lot of other drummers in the sence that he stay fluent and doesn't play like a robot. and like you said, he can incorporate his drums in such a way that they don't over-compensate.

  • @lk4790 I totally agree. That is exactly what makes his great. Never plays a lick just to show he can. A great lesson indeed.

  • Neils becoming more of a pocket virtuoso, leaving all the insane licks and fills to previous work. Good for him. There was a time he was ready to bail and now it is good to see him work solid in his later life.

  • Neil is tha sh*t

  • The Best of WORLD!!!

  • great!

  • that has to be the strangest comment ive ever read. Nothing to say? obviously you haven't heard the newest album its ok we all know you love hedley and fall out boy. If you dont like this song, why did u click on it and comment?

  • Rush haven't had anything of value, musically, to say in years.

    Just aimlessness...

  • shut up you fool go listen to sumone else then

  • Tough song!

  • awesome. hey an agree with ToungAndGrove u should upload all work in progress

  • neils got a killer traditional grip, did he learn that with gruber?

  • Yep... this is the only album he uses traditional on. For the tour he played all the old songs with traditional grip, too.

Not sure which grip he uses when playing the T4E material nowadays.

  • Yes, it seems many great drummers have learned from Gruber. Neil now uses the matched grip again, except for some sections of his solo, at least, that's what I saw on the S&A Blu-ray :)

  • The Picolo snare is 13"x3.5". Great sounding!

  • @constantine2112 is that the one on the very left of the set? beyond the cowbells set?

  • @WatchingMamut Yes, your correct.

  • Great Video.......

  • Hey Mullen freek, you should upload all the songs from A Work In Progress.

  • very good video

  • Is that other snare like a popcorn snare or something of that sort

  • in the dvd he refers to it as a picolo snare

  • Yeah i watched it but thanks anyway

  • when it was recorded??

  • Lol, someone gave studman4250 a thumbsdown cuz he said he could play this on the drums. oh well i guess ill give him one too.

  • i think this is neils best sounding kit

  • i can play this on drums!

  • 2nd and it is pretty cool to find a fresh vid....real deal neil.. praise this while you can. genius!
