@machinamanification hey, hey... dont talk shit about anything metallica... lars is a perfectly fine drummer. i also find your reasoning a bit... i dunno... unreasonable.
Oh quit shitting yourself. Lars has no clue how to right drumming rhythms. yes is a good robot at up and down motions on a drum set. but he isnt nearly as fluent as buddy rich, or omg Niel Peart.
@machinamanification lars has good rthythm and does to beats that may SEEM very simple, but they are acctually not so simple. not to mention the stamina it takes to play songs such as "...And Justice For All and "Battery" and if you didnt know this but Lars is purposley un-fluent, metal requires a very strait, sharp, fast, robot style drumming where jazz drummers such as Neil Peart are fluent and flow more smoothly. you cant compare the two (Lars and Neil) because they have opposite technique
Seriously, how does every video of every drummer on YouTube end up having at least 3 comments from some person defending Lars Ulrich and his abysmal drumming? Utter dump.
Yes i can. It is like a comparing a cat and a dog. one has retractable claws, and one doesn't. one has more muscle but one is more fluent. As a percussionist i CAN say that Lars ulrich is a good drum player, but Neil Peart is a superior DRUMMER.
this is probably the best his toms have ever sounded to me. i want to say that it's the coated heads? i wouldn't know if he changed the tuning, mics, or eq though. anyone know or agree?
@jerrythepotato1919 Dang man you're lucky. The only reason I said just Neil was my hero was that this is a video of him drumming, and I play the drums myself. They are all 3 heroes to me, I commented specific to this video though ;)
@Drummerkid74 Lol yeah I just always like to mention all of them on every Rush video, even if it just relates to either drums, guitar or bass, but we all still love them all and you know it!
@Drummerkid74 I saw him once in my life as well. Changed my life. Oh that live Subdivisions performance... I listened to Rush for the first time when I was 7yo. I'm 25.
who would think that the words in the lyrics would have so much more relevance 15 years later with the internet being everywhere with so much information being sent everywhere. The Borg collective here we come. Resistance is futile? No resistance is not futile.
@superslayerguy Well, first he has his traditional skullcap, to keep sweat out of his eyes, then a pair of heaphones to hear the song, and a pad under the phones so they fit snugly on his head without moving.
Love the song. The only problem with "virtuality" was that it was a 30s-1:00 too long. For some reason the length did not fit this song well. Unlike other RUSH songs, this one becomes stressful to listen to after the ~4-4:30 mark.
He was really feeling this performance, makes me wonder why they haven't included it on their live show, at least since the T4E tour, but idk if they played it then.
As a Rush fan I suppose I'm predisposed to preferring Neil, but i think he has so much going for him that i take for granted. The emphasis on/in which he strikes the note and the motion in between makes for such a flowing performance. You get reminded of these things after watching so many drummers whose emphasis is speed or chops.

@locoflaw They're Neil Peart's signature Paragon cymbals by Sabian. They have logos, but the style of them is very minimalist as the color of the logos is almost the same color as the cymbal really.
@TheDorian66 "A Work in Progress" was made before Neil switched to Sabian, so I believe the cymbals in this video are Zildjians (top china being Wuhan). As to why they don't have any brands, I think that's just a quirk of Neils: he doesn't like them. Zildjian obliged by giving him logo-free cymbals, while Sabian created the very subtle logos used on their Paragon line. :)
best drummer ever. i dont even want to start writing all the things i could say about how amazing he IS I LOVE NEIL, AND ALEX, AND GEDDY!!!! RUSH!!!!!!
man this guy plays so fucking amazing still, like lets face it he is aging but its not slowing him down..at all..fuckin living legend man, by far the most creative and versatile drummer ive had the chance to listen to, and Rush is awesome..
@billpeart And the amazing thing is, as modest and humble as he is, he's referring to himself as the apprentice. Big contrast to the number of people I've met who seem to think otherwise.
I have this DVD...This was recorded in 1996 or '97 and he was still playing Zildjians then. I believe all of his crashes were A series medium crashes. Arranged from left to right, if I can recall correctly, they are 20", 18", 16" and 18" in that order. For whatever reason, Peart has never had screenprinted logos on his cymbals...not sure if he ordered them from Zildjian this way, or if he just had his tech scrub them off.
Mr. Peart is my favorite musician... and I'm a guitarist! I love watching him play. I can't play a lick of drums to save my life, but I'm fascinated when I watch a great drummer. I think I can actually see the influence Freddy Gruber had on his technique compared to older videos of him playing. I wish I could find more Rush songs with the camera trained only on him (no offense to Geddy and Alex... I love them too)!
that song has some awesome riffs by alex lifeson, the lyrics have aged considerably, though since the internet, more than the big sensation it was in the 90's has become part of our lives
@daveydinodave I have this DVD...it was recorded in 1996 or '97 and he was still playing Zildjians then. For whatever reason, he has never had screenprinted logos on his cymbals. @jajdodds: NEP was and still is a guy who doesn't believe in logos of any kind. You will never se him wearing a shirt with a Nike or Adidas logo.
Sabian worked closely with him to create the paragon logo, as he was originally against the line having any markings. So Sabian came up with the logo that is very minimalist.
Somewhere on the web you can google his drums and there are picture collections of his kits over the years, photos from promotional packaging, with a setup list.
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
Travis Barker is better- just kidding!! I agree with ik4790- Neil is a very tasteful drmmmer & doesn't overpower the band, yet his drum parts are very melodic & difficult- not easy to do, which is why he is my favourite drummer.
I believe the thing that makes Neil great ( and this comes from a hardcore neil peart fan) is not so much his technique, altough its far advanced than most amateur drummers out there, cause there are more virtuosic and technical drummers than neil. I believe the thing that makes him a great drummer is the TASTE to do his drumming, his arrangements, and stuff, for every song. He doesnt overplay, but he can make the drums oustand without compromising the song or the drum´s task keeping tempo.
Yeah, he incorporates the drums amazingly as part of the song, rather than just simply backing the beat. And rarely ever uses the same beat or fill in multiple songs
@Mullenfreek I do think Test for Echo is one of their bests ...maybe the best after moving pictures..Neil became so tasty when he started using the single bass kit
@lk4790 you are exactly right about that ,no one could have said it better!you hit the hammer on the head with a nail on that one my friend...you must be a drummer or a beater with good rhythm.why don't you beat up yourself up some more and show the world your technique on your self without compromising the tempo...
@lk4790 I agree, they all do that, there is a video on here somewhere of Alex's amp taking a dump. You actually have to listen to notice its gone. Each instrument stands out so much, yet is so subtle. I guess that why I have heard of Rush being called the ultimate musicians band.
@lk4790 i completely agree. so many great musicians compromise the songs with their virtuosity (if that's a word). les claypool of primus as an example.
@lk4790 Actually had a world record for the world's largest drum set. But with him I wouldn't doubt it, great drummer. I would like to bring Rush out of the shadows that the world casts on them but thats close to impossible because they portray what the "rock and roll" life should be, not like those other asses (well some of the other bands are asses but theres few like Rush out there to be honest, and the ones that are talented and clean are also largely ignored, seeing a pattern there.)
Yeah, he isnt like a lot of other drummers in the sence that he stay fluent and doesn't play like a robot. and like you said, he can incorporate his drums in such a way that they don't over-compensate.
Neils becoming more of a pocket virtuoso, leaving all the insane licks and fills to previous work. Good for him. There was a time he was ready to bail and now it is good to see him work solid in his later life.
that has to be the strangest comment ive ever read. Nothing to say? obviously you haven't heard the newest album its ok we all know you love hedley and fall out boy. If you dont like this song, why did u click on it and comment?
Yes, it seems many great drummers have learned from Gruber. Neil now uses the matched grip again, except for some sections of his solo, at least, that's what I saw on the S&A Blu-ray :)

neils got a killer traditional grip, did he learn that with gruber?
mcufre 2 years ago 4
Yep... this is the only album he uses traditional on. For the tour he played all the old songs with traditional grip, too.
Not sure which grip he uses when playing the T4E material nowadays.

Yes, it seems many great drummers have learned from Gruber. Neil now uses the matched grip again, except for some sections of his solo, at least, that's what I saw on the S&A Blu-ray :)

The Picolo snare is 13"x3.5". Great sounding!
