Stiff Little Fingers is one of the greatést bands of all time (with awesome music and awesome lyrics), along with the Clash, Ebba Grön (Swedish punk band) and Dropkick Murphys.
@prunch72 They also sent out a big punk fuck off to wannabes in the West of Scotland, so paramilitaries on both sides lost some support, maybe some practical consequences, I don't know about these things...
If you were young, bored and political in No.Ireland circa late '70s then a SLF gig would have been a sure-bet venue for venting pent-up anger against the British occupation.
I grew up in N. Ireland during "The Troubles". I first saw SLF in the Ulster Hall around the time of their first album and it remains, quite simply, the best gig I've ever been to. Lifechanging.
these guys played and lived where people were being executed for religion and politics. Not because their arteries had given out due to excessive consumption of pizza and big macs. fuck off fat yanks.
Its ok folks you will have a tory government in soon, they will bring the troops out cos they have a history of saving british soldiers ,oops the falklands i forgot about that and ulster as well,oh and say goodbye to your tax credits and dont get ill,cos the nhs will be "streamlined",cameron wont mind he's got enough money to go private like the rest of his cronies
It's definitely a Yamaha SG range guitar, mid 70's most likely. They've got a very loyal fan base amongst those who know the brilliant quality of Japanese guitars from around that era... Don't get me wrong tho', I love Gibson too!
@Demoman1980 HERE HERE!! Mysons band supported SLF couple of yrs back in Crewe.........met Jake n co after the gig,top bloke and havin been a fan from the age of 12 was a night i wont forget !!
Great boys who knew how to meld brilliant lyrics together with rockin' music.... very few bands can do it - but these lads could. Stiff Little FIngers. No wonder record companies didn't want to promote them!
@boattrainpaddy 'No wonder record companies didn't want to promote them!'!!! what are you on about?.just because they never made it in USA means nothing.SLF were one of the biggest bands out there in the 80s outside USA.they were on EMI and had plenty of push/promotion.all their songs charted and they did a lot of TV as well.
That first SLF album totally rocked. Could be the best punk album of all time, and I don't say that lightly. If you like the sound of the first wave of punk rock, you must get that CD. BTW, loved to see the audience "pogo", though it's an example of herd mentality that drove people like Johnny Lydon crazy; the message: think and act for yourself and stop doing everything I do. Like the song says, don't want to be nobody's hero. Thanks for this great vid.
from a blind fascist..loved it then, loved it still..can't let the fact they hate me stop the old toes tappin'..just goes to show, music doesn't always tame the savage beast..but makes the beast smile awhile.

Dylan's great too, but you're right SLF, Crass, and The Clash(on their first album) had their fingers on the pulse while the hippies were clinging to flowers
Stop the Shiiiite, Falmouth calls after some many years! Jake & Co still no whats going on. First saw these in 76 in N Ireland & you are foolish if you miss em!
Saw Jake perform an acoustic version of this awesome song accompanied by Pauline Black, JJ Burnel and Steve Diggle (I think?) on the 'Three Men and Black' mini tour of small venues a while back.
25+ years on, grey haired and wearing a cardigan (I shit you not!) Jake snarled and spat his way through the song with the same passion and fury as he did in the glory days of SLF we see here. For an all too brief 3 minutes or so I was nineteen again... truly amazing. Hanx!
think you all mist the fucking point.get over your stone age political crap and enjoy a band that had a say on BOTH sides you fuckwits.watched them for 28 years live anywhere i could get to,met the guys a few times.times have changed,so should you bitter cunts.i grew up with stiffs, clash and stranglers music, anyone else has lost out.for the guys who seen slf at the appolo,DONT JUMP JAKE!for the rest, get a life,FANX

I know it was written about the IRA but this song is a pretty dead on illustration of Israel's compulsory military service. even in American hebrew schools they told us to move to Israel and fight for it fuck the IRA and IDF
This is about war in your own back yard, about the Fascists of the IRA and UDF et al who kill for fun or because you belong to the wrong tribe, who murder babies, children, a mother of 8 who gave a wounded soldier a cup of tea then hide her body, I could go on.

No you don't understand the cosmic evolution of the ra.
First they defeated the black and tans.
Then they got fucked up the arse by the catholic church without even noticing.
Then they killed women and children while singing sentimental songs about getting screwed by the brits.
But now they are beginning to see the light and will kick the brits out in a much more cuddly and efficient way along with the Pope.
