A friend of mine could start his SAAB by pushing it backwards. The engine ran in either direction, giving him 4 reverse speeds. He once beat a 350 Chevy drag car by challenging him to race "on his terms". They backed up to the line with his SAAB engine running bkwrds and easily won when the Heavy Chevy (with 4:54 rear) ran out of revs in reverse. $50 bet, still unpaid.

They were Giant Killers in rallyes and couldn't be stopped. 3 cyl, 2-stroke, FWD, column shift. Today's technology would eat them alive of course, but back in the day they were cutting-edge and nearly unbeatable.
