Seriously! Awesome job! I love how it blends perfectly with the guy talking in the old school communication radio at more then just one point! It's perfect
superb !!! haunting epic track,,!!!!thanks for this post with this vid from the movie, i have to see the movie now,, Steve Hogarths vocals are brilliant,, i liked Fish also they both have thier styles and i'mm keen to hear some more pf the 'New Marillion',, ,
I know that you stated that this was your first attempt mixing video and song, but what an INCREDIBLE job you did!! This song, by the great band Marillion, played with the actual footage is so mind blowing!! Brilliant all the way around!!
Stunning use of this beautiful track illustrated by powerful footage. I remember when the tragedy happened - a fine example of a supremely courageous man exploring the limits of human achievement in one of nature's most wonderful settings.
the song pays tribute to a british speed record holder called Donald Campbell and his jet powered boat Bluebird. Anthony Hopkins portrayed Donald in this 1988 BBC film
i loved this sound, I forgot this sound,,, Today I found it back, thanks to the nice video!!! And yes I still love this sound. But nowadays i need some other music on the side!!
K7 THE boss, the boat , the monster that would never be tamed but without men like Donald this world would be just a place in which to shelter and hide.
Wonderful vid AmarokUK. I´m a Marillion fan, and i love every song since fish to Mr H. But this song... is simply one of the best of the band, and of course Neverland, Ocean Cloud, etc, Is very difficult to find Marillion´s CD´s here in Mexico. So I´ve been looking so long this track, but I don´t have luck... Congratulations!!!!!!!!
Just one of many brilliant tracks from a superb band. I dont want to get into any arguments about Fish era, Hogarth being poor!! ( dont know anyone who doesn,t love the guy), anoraks or boring prog rock, if you haven,t got into Marillion it is YOUR loss , just been to the Leamington gig , magic..
When they recovered bluebird in 2oo1 marillion where there as the campbell family wanted steve hogarth to sing this song at the funeral which he did, bill smith the diver and marillion fan has almost completed the rertoration of the craft which will go on the lake one last time b4 goin in the english museum, the story is amazin.
Must say there is something really haunting about this song... I love it and I get very emotional when I listen to it. I had not heard it before but a friend sent me your video and I thought I would say thanks for posting it! I am a big Marillion fan but I am still finding songs I have not heard from them.... Wonderful!
@AmarokUK Well that seems to be what it is for you and I anyway.... Other threads seem to be full of argument. Marillion fans anyway seem to keep things focused on enjoying the music and that makes sense to me. :o)
@spiritualcat@spiritualcat glad to see I am not the only one actually admitting to getting emotional when hearing this sonic masterpiece.I only discovered this latter version of Marilllion 2 years ago and can never get enough of them. ALL the Best :)
Hi, Further to my comment below, was this ever released on DVD by the BBC or anyone outside of the UK as I'm in New Zealand (Region 4) and would love to locate a copy
@AmarokUK my uncle was called harrison he worked for the newspapers then and was donalds best friend, they spent the night before the crash talking and playing cards, he told me that donald new that donald had said that he knew that he had a bad feeling about the attempt but in the true spirit of the age he would do it anyway.
@DannNamesake Dann, there are precious few releases you can go wrong with by Marilion. Check out the albums Brave, Marbles, and This Strange Engine. SO much great music. You can never grow weary of.
@DannNamesake I found Marillion today, from Pandora radio- it played "Afraid of Sunlight" and I've been listening to different clips voraciously all morning.
This is in my top 5 fav ever marillion tunes great song from the amazin album afraid of sunlight ,Qmag said it was bordering on genius,no bordering bout it if u ask me,mind u they think u2 r the best band in world so what the fuck do they know?Rothery is the greatest axeman on the planet! great video by the way,ta ta
Makes the hairs on your back stand on end ! Love the track..love Marillion. Will be great to see the Bluebird restored although im not sure if i agree whether it should have been raised or not.
@crossy1974 thing was her final resting place under water had never been located. The guy who lead the team to find her was a Marillion fan, inspired by the song to do it. The raising - from what I've read was a decision taken based on the fear that if the site got out it could be raided and destroyed. Marillion were invited to the raising by both the team and Donald Campbell's family.
Despite being a Marillion fan in the 1980s I had never heard a Steve Hogarth song until playing this. A brilliant song and video. Campbell was a brave man.
Campbell's body was recovered from the lake on 28 May 2001. Marillion members Steve Rothery and Steve Hogarth were present for the recovery of the wrecked boat but not for that of Mr Campbell's remains.
The project began when diver Bill Smith was inspired to look for the wreck after hearing the Marillion song "Out of This World" (from the album Afraid of Sunlight), which was written about Campbell and Bluebird.
I don't understand people who say Steve Hogarth is crap. This is the only song I've heard with him but he seems to handle the vocals very well, a sentiment that Fish himself has voiced.
I've always loved this song but never knew what it was about til i read it on Marillion's website. I have just watched this for the first time and in tears. It's so sad especially as they used the actual footage of the crash (am I right?).
On 4 January 1967, Donald Campbell was killed when Bluebird K7 flipped and disintegrated at a speed in excess of 300 mph. Campbell's last words on his final run were:Pitching a bit down here..Probably from my own wash...Straightening up now on track...Rather close to Peel Island.Tramping like mad...er..Full power.Tramping like hell here... I can't see much.. and the water's very bad indeed...I can't get over the top.. I'm getting a lot of bloody row in here. I can't see anything. I'm going..oh!
Lets get this correct when I uploaded this Video in 2006 there wasn't a video for Out of this World. I contacted Marillion and had a really nice email from the Band to say how much they enjoyed it. After around 3 - 4 months the Black and White version appeared, this was constructed by a professional who had access to the orginal films of the event. Marillion used this video in the tour as it was public domain
The video used onstage was finished around Dec 2004 - was working on it for at least 6 months before and can't remember when I first posted it on YouTube. It's been on and off several times though hence the confusion. Am not a professional (thank god for Vegas) but it's very kind of you to say so :-)
Suppose I should get that "King" video finished now ;-)
Great vid Amarok, to be honest though this is not the one used at the latest Happiness is The Road tour, that was the black and white one, made by my other half :-))
Thank you for your kind comments, I noted the Black and White one appeared on youtube about a month after I uploaded this so it was an inspiration :-))
@vanpij That black/white video was amazing and AFAIK it contained footage of the crash I hadn't seen before. Very, very moving in combination with the music
Marillion are in my top 4 bands and Coniston is so special to me, my dad swam across the lake while my mum and I paddled a dingh, we got blown by the wind down the lake and a rescue boat came upo to my dad and asked him for a light ( for a ciggie) he nearly drowned laughing... 2 years ago my son swam across the same lake and I was rowing a dingh with my son and we listened to Marillion and enjoyed a dram and beer in the evening.. So Fellini. Many thanks
Ive watched this video loads of times now its very emotional ,you did a great job .Out of this world is from Afraid of sunlight probably the best album marillion have produced ,and there have been many great ones.I am going up to coniston in january and I will stand by the lake in silence and reflect on this wonderful video and probably cry!
You are right on the button friend, this track brings out so many emotions and IMHO is the best Marillion have done (to date) thanks for your comments
when are the bbc going to repeat this film the sacrifice of Don was!!!!well on his return run he made the fatal decision to go with less fuel to get the record. He got it, I wished he lived to see it.RIP.Thanks for the Vid.
That's freakin AWESOME news!!! You just made my day. I wish I could come to the UK to see them live. If airfare ever drops like it did 15 years ago, I'll be there!
They'll be in Montreal Canada next April for the weekend convention, if you have a way to get there - it's going to be insane, I think there's a couple people coming from places as far as Brazil...
When I first uploaded the video to youtube I did email Marillion, I am glad the used my video live it really puts the track into perspective which was what I had intended. Big Smile :-) regards AmarokUK
It's a great video, the images fits very well with the song and definitly put the song into perspective. If it really is this video they used in their live concerts on the Happiness Tour, I can only say it made me shed a few tears and that it worked really, really well!
This song well, its like a story and a journey all inside 10 minutes i love it. Great video well timed to the song kudos to Amaro :), but a sad historical day
i love this song ..the video is a perfect mesh w/ the song ..the crescendos , steve rothery's amazing leads ,its songs like this that make me wanna scream at people who think marillion ended w/ the departure of fish ..its just as good and the core of the band still churns out the most visual and compelling music ..hogarth is his own entity ...but i think marillion is one of the supreme bands of all time ,regardless of whos fronting it ....thanx for posting this
Great song, this takes me back to about 95. You no my freind had a tape with lots of differant marillion tracks on it, their was no track names tho and am still slowly trying to find them all. This is one of them :) thanx
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There isn't a single band alive today that is capable of such power, emotion, and subtlety. Pink Floyd back in the day is the only band I could credit with creating similar emotion.
this is superb!!! well done!! feeling very emotional!! The Campbells will remain british heros forever. I visited the k7 restoration a few months ago unsure that they should be tampering with a peice of history but came away feeling that it really is the correct thing to do, restoring this precious vehicle so future generations can understand what this great man was all about is so important.
I met the leader of the K7 recovery and restoration project not that long ago. The care, effort, effort and attention to detail that has gone into the Bluebird project is awe inspiring. They have preserved a legendary piece of History.
wow - what a great compilation. It could easily be a recognised video for the song. The song and images (plus timings (@5.30 the words sung and image of the engine throttling up)) are very powerful. Being a follower of the bluebird, this is a great tribute to not only a great person but what was and still is a beautiful machine....Very well done on this, it is truly great.
Haunting yet strong, what a mix of Video and Music. Awsume job!!!! Sreaming out of this world making History. Whoa, Such speed such music such vocals. WOW !! Timbo
I like marillion but I don´t know what are the most of them text about because I´m not very good at english but I thihk it´s the best band in this world
What is this quite incredible music ? I was doing some research into high spead boats and came across this footage. The whole edit is awesome and the guitar in the middle captures the drama ...pitch perfect. Many thanks whoever recorded this.
The title says it all, Kmax. The guitarist is the immortal Steve Rothery, but it's so compelling because it means so much to vocalist Steve Hogarth who was raised with the beautiful Lake District of Cumbria in his blood. You can really feel the atmosphere as you can with so many of his songs.
Yes. The fictional version was called "Across the Lake", made by the BBC. Funnily enough, a few days after it was shown on the TV, I bumped into Anthony Hopkins walking in the street. He stopped and had a quick chat about it. Decent of him, I thought.
This is the best song ;) but it's very sorrow ;(

This was actuallly better than the movie,
IMHO.
The movie was misleading and distorted,I felt, and was more of a caricature than
a balanced portrayal of Campbell.
Not criticizing Hopkins or the crew,
that's just how the end result came across to me.
Yet,
can I do better?

Campbell's body was recovered from the lake on 28 May 2001. Marillion members Steve Rothery and Steve Hogarth were present for the recovery of the wrecked boat but not for that of Mr Campbell's remains.
The project began when diver Bill Smith was inspired to look for the wreck after hearing the Marillion song "Out of This World" (from the album Afraid of Sunlight), which was written about Campbell and Bluebird.

1) Your selection of film.
2) Your appreciation of Marillion's soul of this song!
WELL DONE! Adaptation and coordination was PERFECTION!!!!!
Thank you for making this!!!!

I saw Marillion live 2 weeks ago and they played the song this evening.
H said this song was dedicated to Donald Campbell and on a screen in the background they showed this video in black and white.
I don't know if AmarokUK knew about it but that's exactly the way it was meant by Marillion.
It's a real great song.

That's freakin AWESOME news!!! You just made my day. I wish I could come to the UK to see them live. If airfare ever drops like it did 15 years ago, I'll be there!
gunboyrob 3 years ago
They'll be in Montreal Canada next April for the weekend convention, if you have a way to get there - it's going to be insane, I think there's a couple people coming from places as far as Brazil...

When I first uploaded the video to youtube I did email Marillion, I am glad the used my video live it really puts the track into perspective which was what I had intended. Big Smile :-) regards AmarokUK

It's a great video, the images fits very well with the song and definitly put the song into perspective. If it really is this video they used in their live concerts on the Happiness Tour, I can only say it made me shed a few tears and that it worked really, really well!

Nope, that was actual archival footage, this is a dramatized reconstruction. Very obvious since Anthony Hopkins is playing Campbell.

This is Anthony Hopkins playing Donald campbell.... Didn't know he made a movie about Bluebird.

For the BBC in 1988 the 21st Anniversary of the Crash. It is called Across the Lake and IMHO a great film :-)

3000ST1 3 years ago
Interesting fact: It was this song that inspired Bill Smith to find the K7. (Lead singer) Steve Hogarth was present on the day of the recovery.

wow - what a great compilation.

What is this quite incredible music ? I was doing some research into high spead boats and came across this footage. The whole edit is awesome and the guitar in the middle captures the drama ...pitch perfect. Many thanks whoever recorded this.
3kmax 3 years ago
The title says it all, Kmax. The guitarist is the immortal Steve Rothery, but it's so compelling because it means so much to vocalist Steve Hogarth who was raised with the beautiful Lake District of Cumbria in his blood. You can really feel the atmosphere as you can with so many of his songs.

Is that actual footage mixed with the movie production?
Tentacleed 3 years ago
Yes. The fictional version was called "Across the Lake", made by the BBC. Funnily enough, a few days after it was shown on the TV, I bumped into Anthony Hopkins walking in the street. He stopped and had a quick chat about it. Decent of him, I thought.
