...I'm going to inject something here that I hope won't be laughed at. I've listened to every cover the band's posted on surfer's channel. It includes a liberal sprinkling of some _incredibly_ dark songs. This one? Rainmaker? Starseed? By people this _young_? And performed with such focus? I'm not sure how much of the darkness in this music was experienced while performing it (yes, I know the new material's not so dark but still...)
@strangess13 Thanks for all you comments. I think the message behind most of these songs are more meaningful than many top 30 pop songs that are just about bling, booty and getting some. I know as a parent Ive discussed the meaning behind many songs with Logan and watched the original videos with him (Jambi oh boy dark video but the message is a meaningful one).
but this was the video that grabbed my attention because the band managed to convey the pure seething insanity, alienation and bleakness of the original song better than Tool did...not because it was better played than Tool but because of the atmosphere and feeling Random Hill put into their performance.
(btw, hearing this song did help give me a badly needed wake up call when I heard it in Nov 2009 so thanks!)
I listen to the new material. So far it's gritty, not dark. But if you guys ever find you're making truly dark music again...be careful? I spent twenty years as a hardcore fan of negative emotion laden art of all types. And mostly my life was the worse for it. Yes, an honest person admits life has many hard, ugly, or terrifying parts. But if you truly believe they are the most prominent and important aspects of reality then start searching hard for another (truthful) way to look at things.
I'm not a musical technician, but I'd say for a song this ruthlessly technically accomplished that the band did well to play something that was recognizable as the track and had its own distinctive "signature" in emotion and energy. And I agree totally you sometimes have to do something over your head to improve overall.
Did the bassist miss that bass slide? about half way through the song? it gets quiet and the bass slides down the neck, then it picks up again. The guitar was a little TOO distorted and the Danny Carey isnt easy to play his stuff... so good job drummer...
i play guitar and this song is a pain the ass until the chorus wich is tabed 3 and 5 its just that the guitar plays so off beat2 drums and bass but my fav part 2 paly is defanetly the bridge
How about some constructive criticism. Like what they are doing totally wrong? These kids work hard on these songs and for you to say its totally wrong is not really fair without an explanation.
ok to criticize. you cant even tell what the guitarist is playing, the bassist is not even playing the parts he's supposed to. the drummer is good i guess but you cant expect a kid to play stuff by danny carey or almost anyone for that matter, i.e. polyrhythms, singer is ok just off but its hard to cover maynard as well, thats why im saying its too hard for them, tools style of playing is way different from other bands like time sigs, maybe that clears things up for you
ill give it to them that their kids. in a few years they may sound crazy good. as of now, not so much. its also being played totally wrong. and yes most adults suck which means not really anyone should cover tool.
They're amazing for their ages. There's no such thing as a song "too hard" look at some kids younger than them playing way more complex stuff. Just shut up, they're awesome and you're probably just jealous because you either can't play an instrument or suck at it.
tell me something more complex than tool? and yes i do play an instrument and i dont give a shit if im good or not, my little brother is their age and can play much better than they can
Wow !! Congratulations , kids !! You're amazing ! The young drummer did a wondefull job , he deserves encouragments...Keep on drumming , lil' boy , you're very very good :-)
I think Adam would be disgusted in the guitars tone,

@Dethbrin it was the recording device the tone was awesome in the club...

@sliversurfer1 I havnt got a problem with it, I dig the tone, but it sounds too metal for Tool, I guess
