I took the guard thing off the back pickup on mine. I find my Rickenbacker is very far from thin sounding in fact the neck pickup is too wooly and bassy for my tastes, The bridge pickup is the business as far as I'm concerned, Into a massive valve/tube head and cabs with a touch of overdrive it's unbeatable.
