I've been there, not to that place, but been in the same situation. We were caught be a surprise storm that was blocked by the mountains and coming in the opposite direction from most storms. 5 of us were affected and one of us directly hit. He was unconscious for about 2 minutes though as was another person in our group. I can totally relate to his reaction, I did the same thing. It kind of throws you to the ground but not with force though its still totally out of your control.

He probaly got hit by a weaker side bolt or perhaps one of the streamers, not the main bolt. It would have ended differently otherwise.. The rubber does very little, if anything in a lightning strike. It might help protect against ground currents from a nearby lightning strike, and might help limit the current in a far weaker side flash, but if the main strike hits directly all bets are off. The reason why you are somewhat safe in a (metal bodied) car is because it acts as a Fariday cage.

He did not take a direct hit. Maybe a stray arc but definitely not a direct hit. There would be more damage. I saw no damage to his head whatsoever and rubber soled shoes won't help with lightning. It just traveled a half mile or more thru the air...what's an inch of rubber going to matter?
