  • This is NOT live - it is synced. Thomas would like you to be truthful in descriptions

  • I am from the USA, and would have to agree...England hands down, for overall best music producer.

  • Brilliant! Thomas certainly had his finger on the pulse about the coming techonological revolution and its associated angst. A true visionary!

  • KIDDING: That's right! This is the actual history of how the United States of America yanked the atomic bomb right out of thin air drinking heavy water, or was it thin water and heavy air. Anyway it was a thin beach. some thought.

  • great tune

  • Thomas Dolby - style genius ! - where are the style geniuses when you need them ? !

  • awesome song, and a GREAT album-technical mastery aside, no one was doin anything like this. He started something big!

  • I remember hearing Thomas on a live concert broadcast on a summer night. recorded it as I fell asleep... his music does weird and wonderful things to your mind!! LOL!! Miss stuff like this!!

  • @MrHaroldbgibson Actually, he's still doing weird and wonderful things. I just saw his latest video for his song "Oceanea" and it blew me away. After 20+ years Thomas Dolby still has the magic.

  • Wow, never saw this live performance before...incredible musicians. I remember when this song was popular and I was in college when New Wave music ruled the airwaves!

  • 80's music was pure LOVE, man.

  • I agree he was ahead of his time. He went to produce for lots of famous people, but it's a pity he didn't get more recognition.

  • I'm thinking that this isn't live - it's too close to the studio version - however, if it is, I completely agree with you.

  • @technovikingfan Definitely live performance. His voice is rough here, for one. The instruments sound a tad different on the studio version as well.

  • Really good live performance, sounds just like the original

  • This was greatness, but MTV ruined the music business. Now corporate types are manufacturing boy bands and Beyonce's to fit a video look. It was a better day

when you did not even know what the band look like. (Pink Floyd, Tool)

All that mattered was the music not the look.

  • vevo - bite me!

  • people are people sounding at the start, who stole from who

  • @mizmite You're right. As far as I know it's just one of those coincidences. Dolby always created his own "sounds".

  • @mizmite The Sample you hear at the beginning is him repeating the word MISSING and overlaid. It is not Depeche Modes People are People.

  • late night radio played this song when it was new...wow thank goodness for the internet!!! otherwise I would never hear it again!

  • one of the best songs of the early 80's! helped us forget the double digit inflation and 20% mortgages. or the dire politics with the soviets.

  • I just got this synth... fantastic!

  • Music of the Cold War....eerie and well done.

  • drinking heavy water from a stone

  • yes when i got the cassette,it was a sound not to many people had heard of,and my brothers said it was to cool.

  • yes when i got the cassette,it was a sound not to many people had heard of,and my brothers said it was to cool

  • Easily one of the best song writers/musical geniuses of the 80's ... Easily !!!

  • The first few opening notes sound almost like the 70s TV series "The Six Million Dollar Man"

  • wow this song is on vevo now? yay better sound quality!

  • Pop music just doesn't get any more creative than this. I love Thomas Dolby! I remember seeing this on a Laser disc in a store demo and being blown away by it, back in the 80's. Thought I would never see it again. :)

  • Super dooper, next stop europa and the piate twins

  • yes bring back the 80's when I didn't waste time on you tube!

  • A magnificent 80's techno pop tune!

Un magnífico tema de techno pop de los 80's!

  • This is the very 1st song I heard by dolby in late 1982. Even in this "live" version the Moog bass still gives me chills. This is still his very best composition as far as I'm concerned.

  • Absolutely Incredible!! One of the best artists from the 80's. This is not the studio recording either. This sounds like it was really recorded LIVE.

  • we all live in a yellow submarine?

  • Prefer the original single (more haunting). Great song, though - still.

  • I want music and culture like this again.

The 80s- horror movies, big hair, weird fashions.

  • Dolby is a genius and the Father of what is now known as Techno Rock.

  • @chek435

    Don't forget Gary Numan ...

  • made in England !!!!! say no more

  • @megaEDWIN3 no kidding, the best music electronic/synth pop music ever comes from England, Canada and Germany.

  • Perfect timing - 22/10/10 - or, for those of you on the other side of the pond, 10/22/10

  • Really liking the sound quality on this. Yay, TD!

  • So under rated..Fantastic album!!!

  • @darksidedelia1 yes i am totally agree,,

  • this is one of the best songs of the 80's. And Thomas Dolby is a musical genius; just like Peter Gabriel is!

  • Just gold.

  • Just FANTASTIC......Thank you.

  • Back in the day MTV used to have Saturday night concerts. This concert is the first thing I ever saw on MTV. Just a fantastic concert.

  • i wish i was alive through the 80's. it seems like i missed so much. i listen mostly to 80's music anyway, and i just wish i could have been alive to see all of these artists play live, before most of them died

  • @bulletz4life before most of them died? most of them are alive ;)

  • @jekratz well i meant like mj, and most groups that broke up and dont play live anymore. kinda dead publicly lol

  • @bulletz4life well...many of the really popular acts are still touring. For instance Howard Jones still has a very active schedule and still puts out recordings (2006's Revolution of the Heart is probably his best album IMHO...and I had all the big ones in the 80s when they were released...its that good). Tears for Fears does, etc.

And you did miss a lot ;) The 80s was an awesome decade to be a teenager.

  • @jekratz thankfully tears for fears got back together. im probably going to end up seeing them whenever they come by new york

  • @bulletz4life

Hi ! Sadly we just missed them...they were here about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I was driving when i heard they were playing and i stopped short...i was so upset. Hope they come back.

  • @pilatso ME TOO,WHAT A SHOW IT MUST HAVE BEEN.

  • @Mrjoeypunkrock those british are fantastic musicians!!!!!,,mexico

  • This Tune has some resemblance to The Six Million Dollar Man Theme , written by Oliver nelson. They are about 10 years apart , with Six Million Theme coming first.

  • A very underrated artist, I've been a huge fan ever since I heard 'Europa And The Pirate Twins' and still listen and play his tracks to this day. This is one of my all time fave's. It's so 80's in it's sound. I'd love to take a time machine back to the 80's, the sounds, the fashions, the whole 80's vibe!!! I'd love to live through it again haha

  • 2 justin beiber fans pressed dislike

  • Saw him perform this live in the 80's in the Tampa Theatre (vintage 1926) and he did this song with the video in the background. Totally spellbinding....

  • @WildBillK54 He had the 'periscope', also. Great show...great band. The Opposition opened.

  • This was his Best Song.............you never hear this great song anymore, Oregon Loves you Thomas!

  • check out his drummer back there! that's Blue Man Group stuff, 20 years ahead of its time. huge credit in my book!

I love the 80's. the Entire decade was about the Nerds and Geeks getting their turns in the spotlight.

  • What an awsome memory trip back in time I'll hold this n many of T.D's masterpieces Brilliant still n i rekon for always xx

  • GOOOOD VID!

  • wow..great tune...not really lovin all my 80s roots..but hey ...this is wicked

  • Truly a pioneer. Dolby understood what the Fairlight was capable of and beyond. The 80's were a great time to come of age!

  • Loved this era. this was one of my favorite CD's and songs from the 80's. I just hit the repeat button on the CD player and played the Buck Rodgers Game over and over again on my brothers Commodore 64. Both the Game and this CD were WAY ahead of their time. It was a peaceful time to just drop into the zone and disconnect. Lots of good memories as well!

  • Excellent...one of my favorites.....thanks

  • I have always absolutely loved this song! Thomas Dolby had such a different style about him and his music that just stood out from the rest. Very unique and interesting indeed. Such great memories come with this song, the best really. Such a great era to grow up in! Why it all had to change, I guess that is life but hard to let go of what we loved the most. I will always miss the 80's but I hold the memories tightly in my heart forever. Missing the 80's. 80's forever!!

  • Dolby has simply got to be one of the MOST innovative musicians ever, period, end of story! The man was so far ahead of his time, that most electronic/synth music recorded post-Dolby has been anticlimactic.....to say the least.

  • he was my fav in early 80s, I feel a bit sorry for the kids now, the music isn't as good...like you say - mysterious and romantic !

  • Growing up in Harlem, my older brother would play this. One of the all time best albums in my opinion!

  • Dolby at his best! I love this song!

  • Love this album, and he is great great live! This video prooves that !!!!!

  • He kinda looks like the kid from Christmas Story lol. I've enjoyed his music for years. Gary Neuman is another tech-head wonder from that time.

  • i dont think this is live cuz theres no cheering which always in on live music vids which bothers me

this dont though cuz no cheering but still thx for posting and great song!!!

  • @fortifymypoo It is definitely a live version. I remember watching the whole concert on the telly. It certainly sounds different to the studio version. It was probably recorded as a direct feed from the mixing desk and edited in the studio later.

  • During the old days of the electric - diesel subs (WWII to Vietnam) most every operation was done manually. To raise or lower the sub, a dozen men had to work in perfect tandem to manipulate the air valves. It was pure teamwork. Can you imagine the concussion of depth charges rattling the skin of the vessel, but you can't flinch because the other fellows are depending on you to man your position. There is no backup. Every man in, or every man goes down. This song is a perfect tribute.

  • @electrolass you seem to know what you're talking about.... quite refreshing for youTube*LOL*

  • this is such a bad ass live performance, a freakin periscope pops down in front of him for crying out loud, + this sounds better than the album version minus a pad that is missing in this live.

  • Easily the best song he ever produced, and one of my absolute favorites.

Chilling lyrics, but with such a magical sound.

  • This has to be one of the deepest songs that he ever made and sung. It's still amazing to this date.

  • I love this song! It just sound so mysterious and magical. A very cool song indeed. Takes me back to much happier times in my life. when I listen to this song or others from the 80's i just want to go back so bad. Sure wish i could. I know I would appreciate it way more now than i did then. Missing the 80's! 80's forever!!

  • @juniebird72 I know exactly how you feel.

  • @juniebird72 es una excelente cancion!!

  • @juniebird72 can i go with you?? wheres th doctor when u need him??

  • fuckin excellent....It's just like being 15 again-LOL.

Never cared that everyone said he was a wanker etc.....musical genius and evolutionary.

My personal fav song of his.

    Thanks for the posting.

    Cheers

  • Ruddy hell.. I bought the video of this concert years, or should I say decades!, ago...

    (on betamax too, yikes!)

I recall this song was released on the b-side of "She Blinded Me.." and I still have this choon amongst the mp3s on my phone, some 25yrs after I bought it...

    :-)

  • Amazing song, really beautiful. I think it's about his dad. Thanks for the upload.

  • His uncle, actually.

  • one of his uncles... he talks about that in his podcast available on yt

  • He looks like Joe Buck or vice-versa.

The Golden Age of Wireless is HUGELY underrated. I got the cassette in high school and played the life out of it... then I got the CD version with remakes of some of the songs. Way ahead of his time.

  • @sdh41 I'd venture to say that by the time you get to the 80's, the phrase "ahead of its time" becomes less of a complement. I'd prefer to say that the album helped define part of a rapidly changing era of music. It's unfortunate that the kind of vibrant yet dark synth influences didn't see the same mainstream fruition the the roots of modern pop did around that time, but this song (and album) remains serene and unique to this day.

  • @sdh41

I'm with you....have been in love with his music since i first heard this song....bought the ep then the album and all the subsequent ones....still love it!!

  • how can i get this on dvd is it on sale and were can i gt it .i was twenty one when this came i out and i still enjoy it as the first time i herd it .bring back the 80s .

  • Its because his fans, dont use Youtube.. We didnt have home pc's then...

  • He makes me giggle XD

  • Fix the title of the video!!! DX It's One of Our Submarines!!!

  • This is still one of his best.

  • Thomas Dolby is a musical genius.

The Golden Age of Wireless KICKS ASS. the dj

  • Love that song

    and TB's cute

in that nerdy sort of way

  • Dolby is one of the talented musicians I have ever seen. I wonder why I didn't hear about such a genius before today. Thank you iTunes.

  • Finchey, Listening to his music again takes me back to many summers growing up. Good times...

  • Brilliant. The man is a genius.

  • Absolutely brilliant artist, I can't believe how good this man is.

  • He is such a genius that this video received 3958 views and 9 comments over the span of 5 months!

  • lool excuse me :(

  • i just remember, what year was this? I love it. Very cool music. Different. Gorgeousl.

  • Dolby is much cooler when you don't watch this, i agree with j.j. abrams, the guy is a genius, but i miss the lamenting the song has on the album. The last bit is tweaked, man that guy, is cool. I don't know about this imagery of actual sumbarines, it's hancock esque, you know those creepy robot legs he went on tour with rock it era. If you don't know you will one day, i just found out like yester's.

  • thomas is dead ?

  • Absolutely not!!! :O

  • One of our spammers is missing...
