  • East Germany was heaven compared to North Korea

  • just loved this movie...an emotional thriller...loved Weisler...coz of ppl like him who do good n still go unnoticed while suffering the harm of their actions..the world goes on !!!!!

  • The communism was at its strongest and toughest in Romania and East Germany. Neither Hungary, nor Poland were as communist as East Germany was. You wouldn't believe how oppressive the regime was in East Germany and Romania..Poland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria etc..they were nothing compared to the Stasi of GDR. I wonder how fast the east germans woke up from the fall..they had West Germany..

  • If you want I`ll discuss with you the discrepancies, I`ve found a lot of them. An example?? When the girl was hit by the truck and lays dying at the street NOBODY of the people that were standing around helped her. That is to underline the "cruelty" in East Germany (trick of the regisseur). The real reaction would have been: screaming, ALL PEOPLE would run to her to help, someone would call the ambulance... East Germans lived solidarity much more than west germans could ever imagine!

  • I watched this film because I admire Ulrich Mühe. And he was really great in it! So sad that he already passed away... BUT despite this incredible actor - DON`T BELIEVE that this film portrays real life in East Germany back then!!!! It shows the IMAGINATION of a West German nobleman (the regisseur) of East Berlin, don´t expect understanding of what really happened on the streets and in the life of normal people. It`s a shame because he could have asked 1 mio former inhabitants of East Berlin...

  • Sometimes when we are in danger, God sends his angels to protect us. Sometimes when we feel alone, there is a silent friend watching over us with those sad eyes waiting to be watched silently back on, by us. May his soul rest in peace.

  • anyone else reckon he looks like kevin spacey?

  • @91rsb

    Yeah I see the resemblances.

  • RIP Ulrich Mühe

  • great movie

  • This is one of the best films of all time. R.I.P. Ulrich Mühe, a great actor.

  • just saw this, a-m-a-z-i-n-g

  • oh, what a great movie, i did know nothing about this film and the casting, great actor ulrich muhe, really great,

  • I saw this film for the first time a couple of nights ago, and I can't get it out of my mind. What an excellent, well-acted, and thought-provoking film.

  • This film is one of the best i've seen about communism! Ulrich Muhe plays a greate role.

  • i born and life in this world (east germany) for the first years of my life.

    i was young,but i still remember a lot.

    a dark time.

i learn fast that you have to watch what you say ,and dont trust somebody.

    they are everywhere.

the east german/russian stasi was not funny.

and you know what?i feel the same today in europe, more and more.

  • @Somesubjekt any body knows where i can find this movie in english version or atleast with english subtitles please.. i am dying to watch this movie.

  • @Somesubjekt Imagine you were born in Poland, Czechoslovakia or Hungary. You would have no chance for a better life at all! East Germany had at least... West Germany.

Escape, die fighting, rot in prison or live and STFU- the only choices until 89.

  • @123MIURA

east germany was much more bad as poland.

and nobody know before the wall will fall.

  • Amazing movie.

  • where i can get this movie by english dub

  • @amranga It's available in the U.S. The German version has Eng/French subtitles as well as an English track.

  • I'm surprised no1 asked what is the name of the music played.

    Please, tell me! :)

  • that's a great movie!!!

  • amazing movie.the last sentence of the movie was brilliant

  • R.I.P Ulrich Mühe. What a great actor. It makes me so sad to know that we won't see his mesmerizing look on our screens anymore.

  • @Marubi2 you're life was easy my friend... . The communism is Romania... Now that was tough!

  • THis movie was banned in cuba, cuban press said DDR was like sweden ajaahahahaa

  • Sometimes I hate how stupid my country is. American films arent made this great because this country is full of morons who arent capable of understanding such a deep story.

  • @clayton7m - Jews love making money, not art.

  • @mikeduplantier who doesnt like to make money ?...

  • Just watched the film in school in our history-lesson. Watching the end, every member of my class cried. Me too. It's an amazing film! And U.M.'s performance is also absolutely great.

  • HGW XX/7

  • I love this movie. it always makes me thing of the apartheid regime in my country with the 'blackjacks', 'speacial branch', and amaduku.

yes i think european cinema has more soul and american cinema is entertaining....i am still searching for south america, africa and asia.

  • Wunderbarer Film...

  • Amazing ,movie

    Ich liebe das...

    Greetings from Israel

  • AWSOME ! From England With Love ! ! !

  • This film looks very interesting. :)

  • Morgan Freeman called Ullrick Muhe's performance the best of the decade.

  • @daveibukun

Morgan voted for Meryl Streep, it was Woody Harrelson who called for Ulrich.

  • Gives a stalker a whole new meaning

  • @IprototypeI imagine that was reality!

  • @DavidL999 I also agree with you here. Of course, the EUA has produced great movies, but there is a immense amount of blockbuster crap. I am glad that Europe, Asia, Brazil, etc... do not have to stick to Hollywood's rules or expectations, otherwise we would not have, besides those great American movies, amazing and unique films like this one, In the Mood For Love, Delicatessen, Oldboy, Amores Perros, The City of God, Goodbye Lenin, Downfall, Lovers of the Arctic Circle, ...

  • @sochillincali 'Good Bye, Lenin!' is pretty good too, It;s set in more or less the same era as this movie but it's more of a bittersweet comedy.

  • My favorite movie of all time!!!!!!! The look on Ulrich Muhe's face when he opened the book at the bookstore at the end was just perfect!!! Rest in peace, Muhe...

  • @93MickyD1 All great films. I guess the point I was trying to make was the lack of exposure European cinema gets despite it's consistently good output. The world is completely saturated with Hollywood movies, most of which are utter crap. European (and World) cinema fortunately does nor have to stick to Hollywood's rules or expectations and does not fear being butchered in the editing rooms. My original comment was merely a throwaway comment. Didn't realise it got so many thumbs up until now!

  • Hollywood is getting beat. Cinema-this is one war the Germans are winning.

  • This is one of, if not "the" best, movies of its kind. I liked this better than 'Berlin Tunnel 21' (although that film was very good in its own right).

  • Best movie in my whole life

  • El laberinto del fauno estaba más chidaaaaa!!!!

  • @frozenwinterprince Esta es mucho mejor, esa tb es buena peor ultra fantasiosa, esta es mas realista

  • This movie was banned in cuba

  • @folladordeprostis That figures. That'll just increase its appeal.

  • If you are in the United Kingdom, and have watched this, you probably have that streak of humanity left in you that our clearly pro-stazi government want rid of. Please check out UKColumn Org and the Lawful Rebellion movement (tpuc), which seeks to overturn the unlawful (but 'legal') authority of the Venician empire-imposed martime legal system, i.e Parliament and the Bank of England, and the EU.

    Great film.

  • Haha, it's the same actress of "Die Baader Meinhoff complex", she is really beautiful! And the actor who plays the spy looks like that guy from "American beauty".

  • There's a lot of 24 hour surveillance going on in America today.

  • This movie was banned in cuba

  • That dude is in the new movie unknown

  • Watch a pre-tragedy copy of Inception. Listen closely to low volume audio when the actors say safe, envelope, and dreams, or point guns. You'll hear the words, Loughner, offin' her, part of the word Giffords, and much more. Copies of the dvd released after the shooting were changed to cover this up. Tell people to listen.

  • @jamestargetedindiv cuban press said this movie is american propaganda

  • For the records:

Yesterday 09-Feb-2011, Italy’s Prime minister and teen-prostitution indictee, Silvio Berlusconi, illegally forced RAI TV into broadcasting “The Lives of Others”.

The day after, him and his minions took over the entire national media (6 TV channels and numerous newspapers), citing the movie as an example of what happens when a Totalitarian judiciary regime aims at you, proving his insane theory that the charges against him are just a Communist plot to overthrow him…

  • @novembrine1 It is unfortunate that Berlusconi and his cronies used this film for propaganda means. It still remains a stellar movie with some of the best German actors around and the most intelligent script ever for a debut movie.

RAI could have had their own back by broadcasting another landmark German movie the next day: Downfall. Alike Berlusconi, it isthe story of an egocentrical and narrow-minded power freak whose once almighty empire is self-destructing in the most disgraceful way.

  • @gr3ghaa5

You're right m8. Unfortunately RAI is not just subdued, it's totally owned by him, as he actually put his people on its board..

Still, if u'v heard the news, on April the 6th Berlusconi's trial opens!!! Yaeee!!!

And yes, “The Lives of Others” is a supreme movie!

Sure Downfall is great as most German cinema is; Goodbye Lenin, The Edukators, Rosenstrasse, The white rose, The white Ribbon!! Cheerzz

  • @gr3ghaa5

And oh, I forgot to mention The Baader Mainoff Band!!

  • To DavidL399:

Why not simply enjoy Hollywood,European and World cinema/films?

  • this film was EPIC!

  • This is one of the best films i have seen so far a great story full of suspense, intrigue raw emotion and love.

  • for me the movie was more about the ability for living souls to change, to do the right thing so to say and not feed fictions i.e. states, corporations, etc...

  • This looks so good. I have to see it.

  • @Jems17

    yeah, u wanna see it!!

  • this movie is one from my best movies i like

  • amazzzzzing

  • The ending of this movie made me drop a tear while having a big smile on my face. It's probably the best film I have ever seen.

  • amazing film, really love it

  • I have heard the Hollywood plan to remake this wonderful movie. I really hope they don't because they will without doubt make a fuck-up of it!!

  • @DavidL999

lol the Stasi at the sunny malibu beach .. fuck hollywood

this movie needs no weak remake for ignorant english people

  • @DavidL999 There's already an American version of this. It's called Stakeout, starring Emilio Estevez and Richard Dreyfuss.

  • @DavidL999 then just dont watch it

  • anyone who didnt like this needs to piss off

  • very good movie. I watched it in German, I must watch it back in English

  • @VectorArt8

The movie is good because it takes place in East Germany which was ruled by communists. They kept "suspect" people like artists and critics of their regime under surveillance. There was the "Stasi" (= Staatssicherheit, State security) it was something like a secret police. This movie is about a writer who dares to say what he's thiking and a worker of the "Stasi" who has the job to observe him. This movie is about humanity in times of inhumanity. Don't wanna spoil

  • @PowerCrumb45 This movie was banned in cuba, cuban press said this movie is american propaganda, sounds crazy but is true

  • @folladordeprostis

not crazy, because cuba just like east germany

  • @ccs199164 I mean sounds crazy that cuban press said this movie is american propaganda when not a single american was involved in the movie, all the anti-communist movies got banned in cuba

  • freedom is much more important than security

  • @shubidooh but people want security not freedom. see at least here on youtube trailer Sunshine by Istvan Szabo, great film!!!

  • Thank you everyone who has been making suggestions for other great European (or non-Hollywood) movies, I've been making a list! Pan's Labyrinth was a magnificent film and so was Life Is Beautiful. I'll check out The Reader next. Cheers, everyone!

  • @NameCC8687

"Das Experiment" starring Moritz Bleibtreu is also very good.

  • @PowerCrumb45

    Die Welle too!!

  • @NameCC8687 see also The Sunshine 1999 film by Istvan Szabo, starring Jennifer Ehle and Ralph Fiennes, one of my favourite, truly masterpiece. And Edukators is also very good German movie!

  • @ondeia

Hey Thanx for the heads up. Saw Sunshine, and it was overwhelming!

  • @novembrine1 I am glad you liked it:-)

  • Yes in Europe we make very good films like " life of others", " the chorus", "Pans labyrinth", " life is beutifull" etc etc, no the shit of Avatar

  • This movie is so beautiful.

  • I just saw the movie last night, for the first time. And I've been reading about it all day today, because I just can't stop thinking about it. It was mesmerizing and so emotional, I cried for 15 minutes after the last scene... And RIP Ulrich Mühe.. What an incredible actor...

  • @malamu1406

This is what movies should do with us: Create strong feelings, make us think, inform ourselves, learn from the story, the past, whatever! Nice it seemed to work here ;)

  • darf ich euch mal fragen, was ihr von den russischen ehrenmalen haltet?

ich lasse mich gerne überzeugen, aber ich empfinde sie als demütigend und bin der meinung wir sollten sie stück für stück nach moskau zurück schicken.

    gegenmeinungen bitte.

  • nobody in america or england translate movies to the english language?thats a shame.

  • RIP Ulrich Mühe..

    This movie was great!

  • @4Bauhaus

    Mühe died??? WHAT THE FUCK!!!

  • @novembrine1 yep...4 years ago :((

  • @mellystewartx3

    Now, that's a loss!!

  • One of the best movies I have seen in recent times. Pure genius at work!

  • Thanks to those people who have been recommending films! Much appreciated.

  • Fuck Hollywood, European cinema is the best!!!

  • Great movie!

  • @VectorArt8 Its NOT a war movie. Everyone thinks its war movie. Its not.

  • A fantastic movie,very thought provoking.Amazing acting.RIP Ulrich Muhe.

  • A fantastic movie,very thought provoking.Amazing acting.

  • 7/10

  • @x3ntr1 - 13/10 - one of the best movies ever made, end of story - RIP Ulrich Mühe, one of the finest actors of his generation.

  • great movie ! I have watched it yesterday and I'm still impressed by it.

  • It's not as good as "The Sound Of Music" with the von Trapp family singers !

    cheers

    from,

    del-boy.

  • @spacemonkey2382 well just because we dont like resident evil

  • @spacemonkey2382

Get a life, moron! This movie is awesome.

  • @spacemonkey2382

I guess you'd appreciate it more if there was an american remake with explosions and stuff. This movie was fantastic because it makes you think. Something you're apparently not able to do, so I can fully understand your frustration. I've seen better trolls, you've got a lot to learn.

  • Awesome film, great acting, and the final line is just brilliant

  • This movie was banned in cuba, for cuban press DDR was the workers paradise

  • a great film

  • this film must be watched by everyone in the world

  • @VectorArt8 it's not about the war. I'ts about the germany after the war, when it was seperated in two countries. West and East germany. East germany had a wall around it and the people in it where not alowed to move outside germany. If you where against this, you would have a huge problem.. I'm not that good in explaining in english. Look it up: wikipedia > East_Germany

  • This movie was banned in cuba, cuban press said this movie is "american propaganda"

  • Our future is in the past as history repeats itself.

  • fake and gay

  • so gay

  • one of my favourite movies

  • oh nm

  • the bad guys wont let me post this stuff about the cool ass movie

  • If you like German movies, check out Downfall (2004). That is the best German movie before this came along.

  • @teccomin

Agreed. This and Downfall are my two favorite German movies... subtitled of course.

  • One can erase the visible traces of communism. One can't erase the utter devastation it created in people's minds. As an ex-political prisoner in East Berlin put it "My body is alive. My mind is dead".

  • as everybody said here.. this is one of the great movie. the only thing I did not understand why Christa Maria tells that there was no type writer and all she made up as she already revealed George's is the author of the publication ( though she reveals the location of type writer after being threatened)

  • the best german film since schindler's list.

  • @tool619 schindlers list was a american movie ;-)

  • @tool619 I'm not sure what you meant but Schindler's List isn't a german movie, it's an american movie about Germany.

  • stream it online at Go Movie World . com

  • great freaking movie!

  • Ein wirklich großartiger Film!

  • I love this film

german film is always better japanese film

    yeah I'm japanese

such a movie can't be made in japana!!!

    jeasus

  • one of the best movies i have ever seen...simply great, thanks germany!

  • the best movie ever .. hats off and thumbs up !

  • I don't think ANY trailer could have done this movie justice.

  • Never would have thought that I would have ever liked this movie. But I really liked it a lot.

  • propaganda...

  • The Lives of Others is a brilliant film. I can't wait for The Tourist with Johnny Depp + Angelina Jolie! :)

  • WTF????? that movie is the american remake????!??!

  • @folladordeprostis nope, it isnt an american remake

  • @Nichts4lsDieWahrheit So what is the plot of that movie?? by the way this movie was banned in cuba

  • @folladordeprostis this movie is about the political system of the german democratic republic (DDR)

btw: cuba is a socialist state, so its clear why it is banned in cuba
