incredible story, one of my favorites, very complex character interrelationships. masterfully plotted, great casting, acting and direction and TONS of incredible quotes. I love the old spaghetti westerns but Unforgiven is such a confident and well paced movie, and hits on so many levels, it exposes the hypocrisy of america at the time and shows the ugly underbelly of movie violence... a very high skill movie. I don't know why i dont OWN it yet!

I remember when they were filming it here around Brooks. There's was only about ten thousand people here back then so it was pretty cool seeing Clint walking around town or sitting in the bar.

@TELEVISIONARCHIVES  I was not a "nice" western. It was not supposed to be. It was more about the choices people make, how they get to where they are in life and about answering for their mistakes. The real people of the old west were tough, gritty and not at all polished as many movies would make you think. This was a great movie because it was realistic and well acted. Most of the main characters did bad things. The movie intended to reveal the ugliness, not glamorize it.

As much as I love all of Eastwood's westerns, esp 'Pale Rider', this movie 'Unforgiven' is the best of the best. I see incredibly intense symbolism and timeless relationships shown in subtle subtext.

I've honored this movie with my own video edit, not at all preaching, only seeing. My WW2 Dad was a hard man too.

Not only is "The Unforgiven" the best western ive ever seen but maybe the best film ive ever seen. I have seen many movies ranging from all era's and genre's and the unforgiven pinpoints many details that many movies lack. The realism, acting, emotions, story, and characters are incredible. The amazing thing is how well the movie was done Clint turns into the villain by the end of the movie. An excellent direction and acting by Clint as usual. truly one the best actors of all time.

i agree with til you say Clint turns into the villain. He starts out the villain of the movie by his history, then meets the woman that turns him around- she dies and remains the only woman he loves- then an opportunity comes up for him to improve life for himself and his children so he does that- his best friend is tortured and murdered so he goes temporarily insane for vengeance- after he "gets even" he goes on to become a good businessman and father who is never heard from again.

They were different kinds of movies. If you're talking about classic Westerns, then The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is definitely the most popular and the most well-liked.

However, Unforgiven was more like, as I forget who said, "an epitaph for the Western." As far as good movies go, in my opinion, it was far and away better than any of the Holy Trinity Spaghetti Westerns from the 1960s. It simply had more to say and was much deeper. Both are great films, just in very different ways.

"For a Few Dollars More" is also my favorite among the Leone-Eastwood collaborations, although all three of those films are fabulous. Still, I think that Eastwood's three best Westerns are three that he directed: "High Plains Drifter" (1973), "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976), and "Unforgiven" (1992). "Pale Rider" (1985) is worthwhile, too, but not as brilliant as those others.

Most of them have a "runners" I would say, but once in a while they might decide to go themselves. He's said to be efficient at making movies, he knows what he wants - he's probably the same way with shopping. From Ireland, so I just know "of" Target.
