I had met and seen John King play at Uke Fest West and the two New York Uke Fests - I think this song is the most beautiful of all. I play it all the time now, in his honor, and I miss him.
It is with deep sadness to inform you that John (a teaching colleague of mine at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida) passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on April 3, 2009.
May you forever rest in peace, John, and may your exemplary playing continue to thrill and entertain YouTubers around the globe!
Saw the comment where it said it's tuned in GCEA. I could've sworn you were playing in slack key, maybe the video's off sync or something. I'm trying to learn this by ear
Dare say this the the most wonderful ukulele song out there. AND it's not easy.. email John and he'll sent you the tab. Yes it's standard tuning, no tricks. I've been practicing it for a few weeks and I've got the first two phrases mastered, this song is a beast! Play on John King...
John, flawless as usual. See you at the NY Ukefest, again. I'm glad you've shared your iconic talent with the Youtube community where uke players come to compare notes and enjoy each other's company. Your presence completes the Holy Trinity of Ukulele-ists,,John, Jake, and James! You would do us all a great service by marketing a dvd tutorial to explain your technique that I believe you said took 30 years to discover, or come to. Thanks again for sharing.
RIP Mr. King
Your expertise will be missed by all who love the ukulele.

Just lovely! I don't know whether to practise more or just throw my ukulele out the window :)
Is that a concert scaled instrument? with reentrant g?
greybeardd 4 years ago
Thanks! Definitely keep practicing. My ukulele (in this video) is concert scale with reentrant tuning, GCEA.

You seem have excellent technique. Did you study classical guitar before picking up the ukulele?
oldwhtman 4 years ago
Thank you. I actually started with the ukulele when I was six, then moved on to study the guitar a few years later.
