I take that same train and get off where the train is hijacked at 28th street. Sometimes I wish some hijackers would take us all hostage and I wouldn't have to go to work. Ha!!
They don't make movies like this anymore. They don't have actors like this anymore. R.I.P. Robert Shaw, who crammed too much into his life. Alas! And Walter Mathau!!! We lost him, too.
But hail New York City. No place on earth is there like it where this story takes place. :)
This was the greatest 1974 film I've ever seen xD I will stay focus on this first film as I didn't see the 2009 remake film yet. Even though I didn't see the new 2009 one, I'd been hearing rumors that the 2009 film is suckish. I wonder if anybody can give some explanations? Well I can't know if the 2009 film sucks as I didn't watch it yet. I might watch it sooner or later, not sure yet thought.
The 1970's was a great time for movies before asshole directors like John Hughs started cranking out that junk in the 1980's. Those vacant flicks about junior yuppie scum in designer clothes and turned up collars fixated on money and cars. Airhead flicks for airhead times.
Thank God for Lynch. If he hadn't come along the whole decade would have been a waste.
Wow finally I found the original Pelham 123 movie, and it was right in front of my nose on YT. When looking for it on the net I only found thousands of entries for the bs remake of 2009.
Dont you just hate them remakes...whats next, Alfred Hitchcock´s The Birds in 3D?
Either Hollywood isn´t anymore what it used to be or I am just getting old :D
I clicked this thinking it was the remake, and was pretty much going to go to the comment section and praise the original. But hey, look which one it is! Awesome movie!
This is an all star cast. The remake from a few years ago..well, Travolta...can't act.
@BMWDucatiPhil Only fault with this intro is that it's so damned short. It's one of the best things ever done for the cinema. Found out on Wiki that there was a teledrama on it with Karen from Goodfellas in it.
Hey thanks a million fpr putting this up man. Just watched all the movie (13 parts) courtesy of yourself. Great movie. And what a score from David Shire!
I sometimes think that the 70's may have been the last great era in cinema. You only have to look at a fantastic, solid thriller like this to see how far things have plummeted. Here we see seasoned actors, strong characters, skilful cinematography, real-world practical effects and a superior, original script that brings it all together. Today we get badly-done remakes and reboots, overpaid celebrity actors, cardboard characters and overreliance on CGI. This was an example of REAL filmmaking.
I love how Mr. Blue is introduced, just slowly tapping his feet side to side, completely patient, very relaxed, smiling in bemusement at what that guy says.
Why are they remaking such good movies anyway? Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau are very talented actors and most likely the best in history. Even though they made a remake they will never replace both Shaw and Matthau. They also will never replace those old subway cars.
FYI, Everyone: About three years ago The N.Y. Daily News took a poll among its readers voting for the best film about New York City ever made . . . . . . You're watching the winner!
If you live or are visiting New York City, pay a visit to The New York City Transit Museum in Brooklyn. A great deal of this movie was filmed there including the 28th Street Station and Grand Central Station scenes.
tonijn1969 , of course i know is the original one....so I write again that this original one is the best then the 2 remake the TV remake Verision in 90's and the Joh Travolta Version..... At least in the Travolta version the changed a little be the characters and the story, but the TV Version the story is very close to the 70's original one!
If you're looking for 1970's cop movies set in New York City take a look at "The French Connection" and "The Seven Ups." Both have great casts and incredible car chase sequences.
The only remake that was good to a point where it made a huge profit was Scarface and that may have been the best remake made. I don't know what the hell people are remaking these classics for. What would really scare me is if they remade the Godfather.
@MintySpunkBubble You noticed the mix, too! Processing & EQ was awesome! I gotta see who mixed it. Dang, wished I'd kept my spectrum analyzer. It is really hard to keep voice intelligibility with all sfx. Nowadays, that would all lost.
Should have left sound all MONO but hire a danged good sound mixer.
@MintySpunkBubble Absolutely. Shaw in particular was a great character actor though ravaged by drink and preferred to be a writer. However, his Bond villain was the best and he was also great in 'The Guest', 'Jaws' and 'The Sting' among others. Haven't seen the remake and can't see any need for it. I know Travolta decided to make his character shout a lot whereas Shaw was slow, calm controlled menace.
@MintySpunkBubble They shouldn't bother with ANY remake. I can't think of one remake better than the original. But Hollyweird, they're so unoriginal and lazy, they even make sitcoms into movies. Ridiculous.
would somebody PLEASE upload robert shaw's brilliant film "diamonds"?its a great old-school thriller about a cat burglar who decides to break into a bank who's security system was designed by his twin brother, who he hates-to teach him a lesson.you would all love it.
