Thats so much for sharing this! I studied under Jiggs when I was in college, but I've never seen a video of him when he was young. Looks so different without the beard! Strange to see all of his mannerisms on such a young guy too, lol.
Colour broadcasts were in West Germany in 1976. It was in 67 when it came in. East Germany was a few years later around 1972 or 73. The East German's took longer, because the debate in the GDR was to go with the SECAM system. The reason was to prevent GDR residents on the border with West from watching West German TV. But at the end of the day PAL won.
Jiggs is simply extraordinary. He's been inspiring others to play better his whole life. Only known him for 20 years, and never saw him without his beard before :-)
Yes!!! A friend of mine told me that when Jiggs was 14 he came to a local college with all of his own big band charts when he sat in to play with the college guys
Wunderbar to see kid Jiggs at 23. Ditto all the other nice comments ! ! ! I played tenor sax in my 16pc high scool jazz band and could never loosen up enough to do solos the way they just flow from Jiggs. Wow ! Sidenote: Color TV broadcasts in Germany didn't come 'til 1976, and Bert Kaempfert orch appeared the second day of color transmissions!
@MrTVTheme - You are so right, thanks for catching my error! I was thinking of Chile, which didn't get color until '76 or '77. I have a Bert Kaempfert video playlisted from day 2 of color in Germany & the correct date is plainly stated there.
It's great to see how much inspiration Jiggs has given to so many musicians.
That was just amazing to see Whighams abilities at such a young age. No wonder he went on to be such a well known player. You can see how relaxed he was on stage and that he was in total control with that song.
I wonder if this Jiggs knows where I can get my dollar if it got stuck in a vending machine....

I do believe that's an Al Almont mouthpiece ... Miller,Dorsey, McGarity, Trummy Young used 'em.

It is Joe Sydow, he is living in Hamburg now, over 80 years old, but still on the schen and doing well.
Joe Sydow, er lebt seit vielen Jahren in Hamburg, spielt noch immer und ist berühmt für seine Witze.

This would make Jiggs about 23 yrs old? Nice! The bearded trumpeter looks bored about 15 secs in!!
