If they really wanted to prevent this specific kind of mess they would stop making easy credit with the federal reserve. Here's how it works. The Fed made the interest low, making bankers flush with cash to loan out. All people who are reasonably invested are already invested, but to take advantage of all this cash, they have to loan to someone. They loan this money to people who can't afford it. Every one knows this so they make up this mortgage derivative market.
That looks shaky so some companies like AIG sell insurance for it. But it's all based on the bet that housing prices will keep climbing, and based on that bet, more house are built. The over abundance of housing forces the bubble to pop. It all comes crashing down.
Why? Because the Fed interfered with the market in the first place by creating a false supply of credit. The rest of the silly industry was built up around this credit that should not have existed.

MSB180 I like how you like to look over the fact that the rebuplicans had the majority in congress during the clinton administration. Don't try to pass all the blame on the democrats when at that time some republicans had to vote for that act (after all it was a bipartisan bill) in both houses in order for the Glass/Steagall act to become law. The goal of the law was to make housing more available to the lower classes. Bush didn't act on the rising issue so yes it is partially his fault.

Here's an idea. Take the huge salaries of people in corporate jobs and chop them up and trickle that down. Then people would want to work and take pride in what they do and i'll assure you that with a renewed sense of pride people would pay closer attention to our economy because it would actually matter. Barney Frank (D) and Judd Gregg (R) along with many others seemed to be striving mightily to be gracious to each other, be diplomatic and try to keep politics at bay in order to get compromises working and try to deliver some sort of answer to the financial crisis. I agree that Pelosi's "it's all their fault" speech was ill-timed and unhelpful. There's a time for politics and to say "hooray for our side and boo to their side". This wasn't one of those times.

Also the time limitation ("one minute" here) is by tradition ignored for the Speaker of the House, the Majority Leader, and the Minority Leader. Why should my tax money go to homeowners who were not smart enough to live within their means or Wall Street traders who didn't know enough about what they were trading?
Rhetorical question... It shouldn't go to either, my money is not theirs and it should not be the Government's to decide on a whim who it gives it to. But in reality I am a slave for the Government. I create wealth and they take it away, because that's "fair."

Okay, I am with you on this, I agree with you. I was just saying that IF anybody should have been bailed out it should have been the homeowner but not for free. Believe me I agree with you NO ONE should be bailed out, refer to my other comment where I say let them sink and go jump in front of a freight train. Hey I love my money too and that is why I am against the bailout.

jdawgwelling, although this is a very good point, i belive they do this to (try to) prevent the mess we are in now. CEO's take exponentially higher salaries than average workers, but once their businesses go down the tubes, they bail out and are left with all of their wealth and splendor, not taking responsibility for the failure of their business. but it seems like you're a good enough person but too many CEO's or people of great wealth screw it up for you. but we all have to deal with it =[

If they really wanted to prevent this specific kind of mess they would stop making easy credit with the federal reserve. Here's how it works. The Fed made the interest low, making bankers flush with cash to loan out. All people who are reasonably invested are already invested, but to take advantage of all this cash, they have to loan to someone. They loan this money to people who can't afford it. Every one knows this so they make up this mortgage derivative market.

That looks shaky so some companies like AIG sell insurance for it. But it's all based on the bet that housing prices will keep climbing, and based on that bet, more house are built. The over abundance of housing forces the bubble to pop. It all comes crashing down.
Why? Because the Fed interfered with the market in the first place by creating a false supply of credit. The rest of the silly industry was built up around this credit that should not have existed.

I know they do not accomplish what they were enacted to accomplish. Read the Federal Reserve Act. If you know anything about the economy then you will see where their monetary policy has failed and been misguided(for whatever reasons) by member of the Fed and or the Treasury.
The Fed started(1913) the expansion of credit. To this day, it's main control over money is dealing with contraction and expansion of the money supply(liquid and illiquid) through direct and indirect means.

This has nothing to to do with Bush. Regulation for Fannie and Freddie was presented and democrats voted it down. Barney Frank has the Gaul to blame this on bush as well when I have seen him on tape saying that regulation on Fannie and Freddie wasn't necessary.
