The C-5M will be able to haul more freight per ton-mile than the equivalent C-17's. Loading 280,000 lbs. of Cargo on one is amazing. Thats what I load planned for on Hurricane relief missions. As soon as it took off, it took another 250,000 lbs of fuel with a AR from a KC-10. Its a lot to operate them, but with the big hauls, its actually cheaper than funding two C-17 missions, or three C-141's.
The C-5 may be the USAF's most expensive aircraft to operate but there are no others that can match the capability to haul so much cargo and equipment on short notice, and the only replacement is another similar aircraft that's even more expensive. My hats off to Lockheed for their superior engineering!
