The very best Don Quixote on record. There will never be a cellist to equal Rostropovich at his peak, and this collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic is one of his best.
There has never been a cellist like Rostropovitch. During his best playing years no one came near him. I heard him live at that time and he was unbelievably great.
I can't imagine anyone not being in love with that Heaven moment of music... So many people pretending they don't like classical music should hear that...
Rostropovitch gives it an unbelievable human dimension... (perfectly helped by Karajan and the Berliner)... There are no words to describe it... thanks so much for sharing that... ;-)
There has never been such a great cellist . I remember hearing him at his best several times in London. He has always been and always be my absolute hero.
When I heard Rostropovitch perform the Roccoco Variations and Lutoslavski in the same concert with the Bournemouth Orchestra in London in about 1970, I just couldn't believe just how great he actually was. In the Tchaikovsky, his tone was so incredibly deep and musical ( even better than on recording). His technique was absolutely phenominal at that time. They awarded him the Royal Society medal after that concert. Sir Arthur Bliss conducted.
Simply the best!

Have NEVER seen a conductor take a bow before the soloist. No handshake, no acknowledgement--just an inflated ego.

Mstislav is one of the only few cellist to correctly play the grace notes in the solo. Absolute musicianship.
