@PashedMotatoes Here's something interesting: There have indeed been independent researchers who find evidence for the Book of Mormon (I've met several), but if a scholar accepts the Book of Mormon as a historical record, they have no choice but to accept it as scripture. Consequently, they join the Church, and are no longer considered by critics to be independant. Funny how that works.
In the end, the critic's cry is: "nobody who doesn't accept LDS teachings accepts LDS teachings."
So, Democrat Harry Reid has been in U.S.politics for a while. Love him or hate him, does his being a Mormon have anything to do with his serving as a U.S. Senator?!
Joseph Smith was born in 1805 ande wrote the Book of Mormon in 1829-1830. It was printed in 1830. Smith was 25 years old when he wrote the Book of Mormon, which is a fable and became sacred only to Mormons.
This is completely twisted! Sure, there are a couple of things true, but they're all twisted into some stupid fantasy! Us Mormons DO NOT think or believe in the false tales in this video!
There are many things I can say about the Book of Mormon, but I can't prove it any more than I can prove the existence of God (and for the same reason). It's historical fact that truth is laughingly rejected by a majority of the world, because most are unwilling to open their hearts to new possibilities. Keep in mind that it's possible to find sufficient evidence to support or reject just about ANY belief.
I only wish reason, humility, and love could be a greater part of human communication.
@supernovamike This is the age of information and technology. At one time, kings and scholars would tell their people that the earth was flat and that it was the center of the universe.
Nowadays, the poorest student in India is more educated than a country leader.
I have faith in God, but I also believe in reason and science. The Bible spoke of the Romans, Egyptians, and Solomon's Temple. I can look at sources other than the bible and find these people and buildings.
@supernovamike When it comes to Nephi and his descendents, the only source that makes references and records of them is the Book of Mormon.
No **independent** sources have evidence supporting Archaelogical, Linguistic, or Genetic links between the claims made by Joseph Smith and the history of the Americas.
But I know your answer; you wish to stick your fingers in your ears and say, "those aren't independent sources, they're anti mormon!"
@PashedMotatoes You say you believe in God, but also in science and reason. So do I. It's true that this is an age of information, but it's also an age where Satan has more control over the minds of humanity than ever before -- that's something you may want to consider in your calculations. Trusting too much in empirical evidence is dangerous, as such evidence is not basis for eternal truth.
Tell me one thing: Would you still believe in the Bible if it had absolutely zero evidence behind it?
@supernovamike Faith is not about blindly groping around in a dark room *thinking* that there is a light switch somewhere.
Faith is about boldly groping around in a dark room *knowing* that there is a light switch somewhere.
I don't know what you mean when you said that "this is also an age where Satan has more control over the minds of humanity than ever before." Satan has stalked mans shadow since he was expelled from the Garden of Eden. (The real one, not the one in Missouri)
@PashedMotatoes Thank you for completely avoiding my question.
For your analogy: when you enter a dark room, how would you know whether there is a light switch there or not? It seems to me that you would rather just not try until you have evidence beforehand. That directly contrasts with faith, which is not based on knowledge, but on trust. God won't turn on the lights until we've demonstrated faith. I've found that lightswitch, and am sorry that you don't have the faith to look for it.
@supernovamike Don't even talk about me avoiding your questions, you've completely avoided mine regarding the lack of physical evidence supporting the Book of Mormon. I did answer your question about the Bible, I said "No, I would not."
I can have all the faith in the world that I can step off of a cliff and not fall, but I **know** that I will fall because the laws of nature demand it. My falling wasn't due to my lack of faith nor because I failed to fully demonstrate it.
@PashedMotatoes "I can have all the faith in the world that I can step off of a cliff and not fall, but I **know** that I will fall because the laws of nature demand it."
I don't know what it is that you call "faith," but your philosophy seem to be based primarily on secular reasoning, with only a little bit of faith on the side. I am glad that the Apostle Peter did not use such foolish reasoning as you, or he would have never been blessed to join Jesus in walking on water, would he? (Matt. 14)
@supernovamike How is my reasoning foolish compared to yours?
I believe in what I can see and what God offers.
You believe that a mere man walked into the woods, had a vision, found a book made of gold, claimed it to be a historical account and the "truest" of books. After which he was finished translating, the book was conveniently returned to the angel and no archaeological, genetic or linguistic evidence supports it.
It is eternal fact that God works through the Spirit according to faith. Knowledge isn't given until after faith, but our Satanically-secular world today insists on evidence as pre-requisite to belief, which is exactly what you've done here. Those who understand the hand of God know that a laboratory is no place to assess the validity of divine truths; such research is only good for educated guesses. The only logical source for real truth is the Creator of it. Remember that.
@PashedMotatoes I like that you brought up the example of Thomas, although I find your interpretation of the story odd. Thomas said in no uncertain terms that if he did not *see* he would not believe. He needed evidence. Christ words to him after that evidence was given were indeed a rebuke, although a soft one. "Blessed are they who have not seen and yet have believed." Clearly He says that faith that does not require evidence is greater than "faith" that does. "Faith" like yours, for example.
@supernovamike Spare me your sanctimony and answer me a simple question.
If I did exactly as Joseph Smith did right this moment, would you convert to my church? I could argue that you should just have faith and leap into my fold because your demand for evidence would be "satanically driven."
@supernovamike I believe that the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is nothing more than a gathering of confused people who have established a Theocracy in Utah and call themselves Christians.
Their beliefs regarding the "levels of heaven," Lucifer and Jesus being brothers, and qualifications for eternal life are borderline blasphemy that conflict with Biblical doctrine.
@PashedMotatoes Furthermore, their claims of the Book of Mormon to be a historical account of the Americas have not been approved by any independent scholars or experts.
If you have to pray to know if what sits in front of you is a con, then you truly are lost.
@PashedMotatoes You say there's no evidence for the Book of Mormon? I say there is. In the same way, an Atheist will say that there is no evidence for the Bible, but you'd say there is. Why is "evidence" so subjective? Nothing has been "proven," and no question is not debated. The world's secular method for establishing truth is pathetic in comparison to God's.
Evidence isn't given and the light isn't turned on until AFTER faith. Faith grows into knowledge if it is placed in something TRUE.
@PashedMotatoes I've shown you from the scriptures that your reasoning is flawed in God's sight, and you brushed it aside and continued on your self-destructive way. You, like all others I've talked with, have proven to me again that debating over evidence is fruitless, as a person will believe what they want to believe, no matter how much others try to make the decision for them. The door is open for you to increase your faith and receive greater blessings, but it's your choice to make.
@PashedMotatoes Having faith does not exclude the aid that can be given through the secular world -- Christ taught that principle clearly also. You still give medicine to the sick, but that doesn't replace your trust in God's ability to heal the person. The man who thinks he can accomplish anything without God is the man who will spend eternity in shame, realizing that he hasn't accomplished anything at all. Secular efforts are always secondary to the ways of God. Do you believe that or not?
@supernovamike You should ask that question to the mirror; in my faith we are not equal with God, nor can we buy our way into his embrace with earthly deeds.
Of course I believe that secular efforts are secondary to the ways of God, thats part of what makes a Christian.
You're wandering very far from the original point of Joseph Smith's fantastic story and how there's no physical evidence supporting it.
@PashedMotatoes I'll agree with you on one thing: Your definitions of LDS doctrine are not in harmony with the Bible. But your concept of our beliefs is misguided. Like everyone else, you're attacking your own little straw-man version of The Church of Jesus Christ, and you think you've defeated it. Hopefully some day you'll figure out what "Mormons" really believe.
It's not about blind faith, it's about prayerfully searching for the truth, and trusting God (not the world) to help you find it.
@PashedMotatoes Just remember that faith yields evidence, not the other way around. That's what the scriptures say. So, in closing, if you have anything else to say, feel free, as I'm sure you'd like to have the last word. But if you have nothing more than the same points I've heard more times than I want to think about, I won't bother any more to explain. Know that I KNOW (not just "have faith") that the Book of Mormon is true, and hopefully someday you'll understand how. Have a nice day. :)
Satan can be so predictable at times. The exact same methods he uses to turn people from the Bible, he also uses to indoctrinate people against the BoM. What I find ironic is that there are people like you who he catches in the middle; they withstand his assaults on the Bible, but then join his ranks when he attacks the Book of Mormon. You can't play on both teams, either you trust in God's truth or the world's truth. We all must choose a side, then think and live accordingly.
@supernovamike So everyone who's not a mormon and expresses suspicions about them are really being influenced by Satan rather than....an academic curiosity over the claims and lack of physical evidence?
You make it out to be something that it's not. You're trying to criminalize the standards of education and reason because they conflict with your faith.
This just goes to show that you can make people believe anything if you get to them when they are young enough. If you want proof, just look at the mormon religion.
cjlambe11 - If this isn't true...tell us with your corporation's own fables what the truth is. Until you can do this...there's no reason to not believe it.
Not "become polygamous gods in eternity" -- polygynous. Only the males will have multiple spouses.
The women are expected to make do with some fraction of a male god, just as on Earth they are expected to make do with some fraction of a husband, and her children are expected to make do with some fraction of a father. The word for this is "polygyny," not "polygamy."
@RetroVGamer Oh I can't believe it! Haven't you people read a thing I've said? I'm a convert to the Mormon church and we are NOT RACIST! You people just do not understand the doctrines of the church! The LDS church offers more spiritually for blacks than any other church! Ask the blacks in the church! Do you think they would stay if they felt it was a 'racist" church in the way people think of racism?? NO!! Take the time to learn the truth about our church instead of just putting it down!!
@cindybin2001 I guess that's how it used to be. That's what's good about made up religions. You can make up parts of it as you go along. We used to believe that, but now we don't.
@RetroVGamer What are you TALKING about??? Obviously you don't know anything about the doctrines of the church! But why do I even bother?? No matter what I say, you will disagree with me or come up with some other snide comment. I know what the Internet is like. You just want to tear down the church.
@cindybin2001 You're just a parrot. Repeating what's been infused into your brain since you were a child. Each generation brainwashes the next. It's a vicious cycle.
@RetroVGamer What is WRONG with you?? As I've said a million times, I am a CONVERT to the Mormon church! I joined when I was in my 20s! And I read all this anti-mormon stuff when I was first investigating the church over 30 years ago! I took the time to learn the truth. I wish others would as well.
e.g. the Native Americans had high-set noses, while the mongoloids that they're supposed to have come from have low-set noses. So how is it possible that this has been "proven"?
I like what they say: "History is but a lie agreed upon." There is constantly new discovery being done, and who knows how much has gone undiscovered. Our understanding of the past is far from certain. Lots of linguistic and archaelogic evidence supports the BoM, but that won't make anyone believe it.
@supernovamike "Lots of linguistic and archaelogic evidence supports the BoM, but that won't make anyone believe it."
In 600 BCE the language used in the region Nephi and his family came from would have been Aramaic or Hebrew. Joseph Smith claimed that he translated "reformed Egyptian." Independent Egyptologists do not acknowledge the existence of this supposed script.
@PashedMotatoes I don't know exactly what "reformed Egyptian" was, but as you said, they spoke Hebrew in Lehi's day, and that is the language they spoke the most throughout the Book of Mormon. The reformed Egyptian would have been a kind of shorthand that they developed themselves (no wonder Egyptologists don't know it) and used because writing space was limited. That's how it is explained by the Book of Mormon writers themselves. (see Mormon 9:32 for one example)
@supernovamike You do realize that this is no different than picking up "Lord of the Rings" and saying that it's a true account right?
There are entire civilizations with their own languages who no longer exist and mention of these people are only in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
If someone started a church that believed Tolkien was a prophet and tweaked his books into religious metaphors and symbolism, it would be the exact same thing as the Latter Day Saints, but cooler.
I liked how you wrote, "If someone started a church that believed Tolkien was a prophet and tweaked his books into religious metaphors and symbolism, it would be the exact same thing as the Latter Day Saints, but cooler."
I'll bet that you've never read the Book of Mormon, correct? If you did, you would know the difference between it and Lord of the Rings. But that's very witty; thank you for making me laugh.
For the sake of providing a rebuttal (though I know it's not worth the effort): Tolkien never claimed to be a prophet, nor does he have witnesses that testified to their death the truth of his work, and countless others who knew him personally that added their witness to his divine call.
@supernovamike Incorrect, I have read the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Principal Gospels.
According to the logic of witnessing and testifying to their deaths of the truth of his work. What of the millions of people who are Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, and Christians?
Being a zealot doesn't make you right, it makes you dedicated and loyal to a belief that you are.
@PashedMotatoes Yeah, except Tolkien was a renowned author, not a 14 year old uneducated boy. If you want to be informed, you shouldn't look at just the bigotrous spew like this.
@supernovamike I'd like to see what archaelogical evidence you've found that supports the BoM.
There is no mention of the Nephites or Lamanites by the Inca or Mayan civilizations, which existed since 15,000 BCE. There are no cities, temples, arms and armor, coins, and most importantly, no books. The Nephites and Lamanites were described as a literate people, they would have written a great number of stories and songs.
@PashedMotatoes "There is no mention of the Nephites or Lamanites by the Inca or Mayan civilizations"
Not by their English names, of course not. We can't expect to find a sign saying "Welcome to Zarahemla!" (but even that wouldn't convince most people.) There's not only a language barrier, but a massive time gap complicated by an extreme lack of records (thank the conquistadors). But I don't know how you can say there are no cities, temples, or weapons in ancient America. Are you serious?
@supernovamike You're taking what I said out of context. I was alluding to the lack of ***Israel inspired*** architecture, temples, weapons, coins, and scrolls.
*covers face with palm* The Spanish Conquistadors came to the Americas in 1519 and destroyed the Aztec empire. Yet we still know that the Aztecs existed. You cannot completely erase a massive civilization, remnants are always found.
It's misleading to think of the Nephites as a civilization that was completely annhilated in every way. Even the Book of Mormon records don't go into great detail about events for their final 400 years. The Nephites and Lamanites were largely a mixed/homogenous people during most of that time (unlike what this video portrays), and those that lived on further ("Lamanites") would likely have gone on to become part of other civilizations we know of, and been known by other names.
@supernovamike We're talking about an entire civilization that spanned from coast to coast with millions of people, boasted hundreds of cities of Israel inspiration, many of the population were described as literate and apparantly had their own "reformed egyptian" script while speaking hebrew.
Yet we have not discovered a single city with resemblence to Israel's architecture, nor have we found any ancient Synogogues, nor any Judaic scrolls in the Americas.
@supernovamike All of my information came from independent sources such as the Smithsonian Institute of Washington D.C. They begin and finish their research unbiased. Their goal is "lets find out as much as we can about history."
Your information seems to come from Brigham Young University, which does not research or work unbiased. Their conclusions are drawn before they even begin. Their goal is "the BoM is true, lets find everything that supports it."
@supernovamike In addition, whereas the Book of Mormon presents the picture of a relatively homogeneous people, with a single language and communication between distant parts of the Americas, the pre-columbian history of the Americas shows the opposite: widely disparate racial types (almost entirely east Asian - definitely not Semitic, as proven by recent DNA studies), and many unrelated native languages, none of which are even remotely related to Hebrew or Egyptian.
@kjvjay I can't understand how people confuse themselves to the point that they think this DNA argument is actually "proof." Anyone who's even dabbled in such research knows that it is not an exact science. DNA testing can't even prove that I'm related to my own ancestors just four generations back, and we're trying to say that it has "proven" an absence of any Israelite blood over a 2000-year gap? The margin of error is absolutely massive. Besides, even the argument of Asian descent has flaws.
@supernovamike The LDS church has spent millions of dollars over many years trying to prove through archaeological research that the Book of Mormon is an accurate historical record, but they have failed to produce any convincing pre-columbian archeological evidence supporting the Book of Mormon story
@endofus: Yep. Kinda reminds me of those idiots who claim that 'Aryan' white people arrived in America before any of the Natives did.....I wonder if they'll start a religion, too? LOL. =p
Who gives a fuck if their religion is weird? All religions are based on weird ideas. If it doesn't affect you personally in some monumental way, does it really matter? There's gotta be better ways to spend your time that don't involve hating on someone elses beliefs..
There is no archaelogical, genetic, or linguistic evidence to support the claims made by Joseph Smith or the Book of Mormon, furthermore there are no sources other than the Book of Mormon that contain references and records of the man named Nephi and his descendants.
"...but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed."
At least the uploader of this video is allowing comments from everyone, both those who believe Mormonism and those who don't. Unlike the crazy, trolling, semi-literate "ulisscarple" who posted a part of the cartoon from this video and deletes all comments he disagrees with while ranting like a deranged 3-year-old.
BTW, there are a lot better sources for criticism of the Mormon Church than "The God Makers". Just saying.
@knottooworry All of the other candidates believe in a talking snake, zombie Jesus, magic water, and the ability to speak directly to an invisible creature who some how created everything. But this is too far?
@FantomL0rd you make it sound like zombies, magic, and invisible creatures don't exist.... i get your sarcastic pun at Christianity, but zombies, magic, and invisible beings do in fact exist. Ever seen seriously drugged up people? or those whose eyes are completely blank? yeah zombies deff exist.
I am not a mormon and don't really care about religious affiliations. The Person is either Pro America First or they are not. If all the OWS protestors really want to make their point, they better line up and vote, period. If you don't vote, you will lose respect from those who have given you the benefit of the doubt, being this is America. There's only candidate that has take "zero money" from Wall Street, Goldman Sachs, any lobbyist, etc.. If you want to be taken seriously, then vote
This video is what Mormon leaders, Prophets/Presidents, Apostles and Members of the First Council of Seventy, sustained in General Conferences, have and do teach. It is easily found and documented in their publications. Mormons today want to be viewed as contemporary, probably for political reasons. The teachings and actions of Mormon leaders have become an embarrassment to them, so they now feel the need to deny these not so wonderful esoteric teachings.
funny/sad thing is: this is no more insane then any other religious doctrine (in fact you COULD make the argument the extra terrestrial life is more feasible!) its just that we're used to the others so they no longer shock.

Well, duh.

I only wish reason, humility, and love could be a greater part of human communication.
supernovamike 1 month ago
@supernovamike This is the age of information and technology. At one time, kings and scholars would tell their people that the earth was flat and that it was the center of the universe.
Nowadays, the poorest student in India is more educated than a country leader.
I have faith in God, but I also believe in reason and science. The Bible spoke of the Romans, Egyptians, and Solomon's Temple. I can look at sources other than the bible and find these people and buildings.
PashedMotatoes 1 month ago
@supernovamike When it comes to Nephi and his descendents, the only source that makes references and records of them is the Book of Mormon.
No **independent** sources have evidence supporting Archaelogical, Linguistic, or Genetic links between the claims made by Joseph Smith and the history of the Americas.
But I know your answer; you wish to stick your fingers in your ears and say, "those aren't independent sources, they're anti mormon!"
Do you "laughingly reject the truth?"
PashedMotatoes 1 month ago
@PashedMotatoes You say you believe in God, but also in science and reason. So do I. It's true that this is an age of information, but it's also an age where Satan has more control over the minds of humanity than ever before -- that's something you may want to consider in your calculations. Trusting too much in empirical evidence is dangerous, as such evidence is not basis for eternal truth.
Tell me one thing: Would you still believe in the Bible if it had absolutely zero evidence behind it?
supernovamike 4 weeks ago
@supernovamike No, I would not.
PashedMotatoes 4 weeks ago
@supernovamike Faith is not about blindly groping around in a dark room *thinking* that there is a light switch somewhere.
Faith is about boldly groping around in a dark room *knowing* that there is a light switch somewhere.
I don't know what you mean when you said that "this is also an age where Satan has more control over the minds of humanity than ever before." Satan has stalked mans shadow since he was expelled from the Garden of Eden. (The real one, not the one in Missouri)
PashedMotatoes 4 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes Thank you for completely avoiding my question.
For your analogy: when you enter a dark room, how would you know whether there is a light switch there or not? It seems to me that you would rather just not try until you have evidence beforehand. That directly contrasts with faith, which is not based on knowledge, but on trust. God won't turn on the lights until we've demonstrated faith. I've found that lightswitch, and am sorry that you don't have the faith to look for it.
supernovamike 4 weeks ago
@supernovamike Don't even talk about me avoiding your questions, you've completely avoided mine regarding the lack of physical evidence supporting the Book of Mormon. I did answer your question about the Bible, I said "No, I would not."
I can have all the faith in the world that I can step off of a cliff and not fall, but I **know** that I will fall because the laws of nature demand it. My falling wasn't due to my lack of faith nor because I failed to fully demonstrate it.
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes "I can have all the faith in the world that I can step off of a cliff and not fall, but I **know** that I will fall because the laws of nature demand it."
I don't know what it is that you call "faith," but your philosophy seem to be based primarily on secular reasoning, with only a little bit of faith on the side. I am glad that the Apostle Peter did not use such foolish reasoning as you, or he would have never been blessed to join Jesus in walking on water, would he? (Matt. 14)
supernovamike 3 weeks ago
@supernovamike How is my reasoning foolish compared to yours?
I believe in what I can see and what God offers.
You believe that a mere man walked into the woods, had a vision, found a book made of gold, claimed it to be a historical account and the "truest" of books. After which he was finished translating, the book was conveniently returned to the angel and no archaeological, genetic or linguistic evidence supports it.
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes
Remember that.
supernovamike 4 weeks ago
@supernovamike So your solution to help a sick man is to give him a prayer, whereas my solution to help a sick man is to give him some medicine?
And my solution is satanically driven because it's a display of my lack of faith?
The supposed existence of an entire civilization, that no one outside of the Latter Day Saints faith has ever even heard of is NOT a divine truth.
In the Bible that I read and the Jesus that I know, Thomas was not rebuked because he demanded evidence.
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes I like that you brought up the example of Thomas, although I find your interpretation of the story odd. Thomas said in no uncertain terms that if he did not *see* he would not believe. He needed evidence. Christ words to him after that evidence was given were indeed a rebuke, although a soft one. "Blessed are they who have not seen and yet have believed." Clearly He says that faith that does not require evidence is greater than "faith" that does. "Faith" like yours, for example.
supernovamike 3 weeks ago
@supernovamike Spare me your sanctimony and answer me a simple question.
If I did exactly as Joseph Smith did right this moment, would you convert to my church? I could argue that you should just have faith and leap into my fold because your demand for evidence would be "satanically driven."
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes You could do the same, but with the Lord of the Ring's Books by adding a fan-made movie or book you decide.
MrPancho2324 3 weeks ago
@supernovamike I believe that the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is nothing more than a gathering of confused people who have established a Theocracy in Utah and call themselves Christians.
Their beliefs regarding the "levels of heaven," Lucifer and Jesus being brothers, and qualifications for eternal life are borderline blasphemy that conflict with Biblical doctrine.
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes Furthermore, their claims of the Book of Mormon to be a historical account of the Americas have not been approved by any independent scholars or experts.
If you have to pray to know if what sits in front of you is a con, then you truly are lost.
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes You say there's no evidence for the Book of Mormon? I say there is. In the same way, an Atheist will say that there is no evidence for the Bible, but you'd say there is. Why is "evidence" so subjective? Nothing has been "proven," and no question is not debated. The world's secular method for establishing truth is pathetic in comparison to God's.
Evidence isn't given and the light isn't turned on until AFTER faith. Faith grows into knowledge if it is placed in something TRUE.
supernovamike 3 weeks ago
@supernovamike You are so retarded that it's unbelievable.
Are you really going to avoid the questions that I posed and turn the debate towards the definition of evidence?
Really?
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes I've shown you from the scriptures that your reasoning is flawed in God's sight, and you brushed it aside and continued on your self-destructive way. You, like all others I've talked with, have proven to me again that debating over evidence is fruitless, as a person will believe what they want to believe, no matter how much others try to make the decision for them. The door is open for you to increase your faith and receive greater blessings, but it's your choice to make.
supernovamike 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes Having faith does not exclude the aid that can be given through the secular world -- Christ taught that principle clearly also. You still give medicine to the sick, but that doesn't replace your trust in God's ability to heal the person. The man who thinks he can accomplish anything without God is the man who will spend eternity in shame, realizing that he hasn't accomplished anything at all. Secular efforts are always secondary to the ways of God. Do you believe that or not?
supernovamike 3 weeks ago
@supernovamike You should ask that question to the mirror; in my faith we are not equal with God, nor can we buy our way into his embrace with earthly deeds.
Of course I believe that secular efforts are secondary to the ways of God, thats part of what makes a Christian.
You're wandering very far from the original point of Joseph Smith's fantastic story and how there's no physical evidence supporting it.
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes I'll agree with you on one thing: Your definitions of LDS doctrine are not in harmony with the Bible. But your concept of our beliefs is misguided. Like everyone else, you're attacking your own little straw-man version of The Church of Jesus Christ, and you think you've defeated it. Hopefully some day you'll figure out what "Mormons" really believe.
It's not about blind faith, it's about prayerfully searching for the truth, and trusting God (not the world) to help you find it.
supernovamike 3 weeks ago
@supernovamike
Yeah, okay. Whatever.
PashedMotatoes 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes Just remember that faith yields evidence, not the other way around. That's what the scriptures say. So, in closing, if you have anything else to say, feel free, as I'm sure you'd like to have the last word. But if you have nothing more than the same points I've heard more times than I want to think about, I won't bother any more to explain. Know that I KNOW (not just "have faith") that the Book of Mormon is true, and hopefully someday you'll understand how. Have a nice day. :)
supernovamike 3 weeks ago
@PashedMotatoes
We all must choose a side, then think and live accordingly.
supernovamike 4 weeks ago
@supernovamike So everyone who's not a mormon and expresses suspicions about them are really being influenced by Satan rather than....an academic curiosity over the claims and lack of physical evidence?

e.g. the Native Americans had high-set noses, while the mongoloids that they're supposed to have come from have low-set noses. So how is it possible that this has been "proven"?
I like what they say: "History is but a lie agreed upon." There is constantly new discovery being done, and who knows how much has gone undiscovered. Our understanding of the past is far from certain. Lots of linguistic and archaelogic evidence supports the BoM, but that won't make anyone believe it.
supernovamike 1 month ago
@supernovamike
Surely you do not think the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price or the Doctrine and Convents are the inspiration of the most high God.
kjvjay 1 month ago
@supernovamike "Lots of linguistic and archaelogic evidence supports the BoM, but that won't make anyone believe it."
In 600 BCE the language used in the region Nephi and his family came from would have been Aramaic or Hebrew. Joseph Smith claimed that he translated "reformed Egyptian." Independent Egyptologists do not acknowledge the existence of this supposed script.
PashedMotatoes 1 month ago
@PashedMotatoes I don't know exactly what "reformed Egyptian" was, but as you said, they spoke Hebrew in Lehi's day, and that is the language they spoke the most throughout the Book of Mormon. The reformed Egyptian would have been a kind of shorthand that they developed themselves (no wonder Egyptologists don't know it) and used because writing space was limited. That's how it is explained by the Book of Mormon writers themselves. (see Mormon 9:32 for one example)
supernovamike 1 month ago
@supernovamike You do realize that this is no different than picking up "Lord of the Rings" and saying that it's a true account right?
There are entire civilizations with their own languages who no longer exist and mention of these people are only in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

For the sake of providing a rebuttal (though I know it's not worth the effort): Tolkien never claimed to be a prophet, nor does he have witnesses that testified to their death the truth of his work, and countless others who knew him personally that added their witness to his divine call.
supernovamike 1 month ago
@supernovamike Incorrect, I have read the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Principal Gospels.
According to the logic of witnessing and testifying to their deaths of the truth of his work. What of the millions of people who are Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, and Christians?

@supernovamike I'd like to see what archaelogical evidence you've found that supports the BoM.
There is no mention of the Nephites or Lamanites by the Inca or Mayan civilizations, which existed since 15,000 BCE. There are no cities, temples, arms and armor, coins, and most importantly, no books. The Nephites and Lamanites were described as a literate people, they would have written a great number of stories and songs.
PashedMotatoes 1 month ago
@PashedMotatoes "There is no mention of the Nephites or Lamanites by the Inca or Mayan civilizations"
Not by their English names, of course not. We can't expect to find a sign saying "Welcome to Zarahemla!" (but even that wouldn't convince most people.) There's not only a language barrier, but a massive time gap complicated by an extreme lack of records (thank the conquistadors). But I don't know how you can say there are no cities, temples, or weapons in ancient America. Are you serious?
supernovamike 1 month ago
@supernovamike You're taking what I said out of context. I was alluding to the lack of ***Israel inspired*** architecture, temples, weapons, coins, and scrolls.
*covers face with palm* The Spanish Conquistadors came to the Americas in 1519 and destroyed the Aztec empire. Yet we still know that the Aztecs existed. You cannot completely erase a massive civilization, remnants are always found.
PashedMotatoes 1 month ago
@PashedMotatoes
It's misleading to think of the Nephites as a civilization that was completely annhilated in every way. Even the Book of Mormon records don't go into great detail about events for their final 400 years. The Nephites and Lamanites were largely a mixed/homogenous people during most of that time (unlike what this video portrays), and those that lived on further ("Lamanites") would likely have gone on to become part of other civilizations we know of, and been known by other names.
supernovamike 1 month ago
@supernovamike We're talking about an entire civilization that spanned from coast to coast with millions of people, boasted hundreds of cities of Israel inspiration, many of the population were described as literate and apparantly had their own "reformed egyptian" script while speaking hebrew.
Yet we have not discovered a single city with resemblence to Israel's architecture, nor have we found any ancient Synogogues, nor any Judaic scrolls in the Americas.
PashedMotatoes 1 month ago
@supernovamike All of my information came from independent sources such as the Smithsonian Institute of Washington D.C. They begin and finish their research unbiased. Their goal is "lets find out as much as we can about history."
Your information seems to come from Brigham Young University, which does not research or work unbiased. Their conclusions are drawn before they even begin. Their goal is "the BoM is true, lets find everything that supports it."
PashedMotatoes 1 month ago
@supernovamike The Book of Mormon does not correspond to anything found by archaeologists anywhere in the Americas
endofus 1 month ago
@supernovamike In addition, whereas the Book of Mormon presents the picture of a relatively homogeneous people, with a single language and communication between distant parts of the Americas, the pre-columbian history of the Americas shows the opposite: widely disparate racial types (almost entirely east Asian - definitely not Semitic, as proven by recent DNA studies), and many unrelated native languages, none of which are even remotely related to Hebrew or Egyptian.
endofus 1 month ago
@kjvjay I can't understand how people confuse themselves to the point that they think this DNA argument is actually "proof." Anyone who's even dabbled in such research knows that it is not an exact science. DNA testing can't even prove that I'm related to my own ancestors just four generations back, and we're trying to say that it has "proven" an absence of any Israelite blood over a 2000-year gap? The margin of error is absolutely massive. Besides, even the argument of Asian descent has flaws.
supernovamike 1 month ago
@supernovamike The LDS church has spent millions of dollars over many years trying to prove through archaeological research that the Book of Mormon is an accurate historical record, but they have failed to produce any convincing pre-columbian archeological evidence supporting the Book of Mormon story

Maybe they are in the Smithsonian…No, no that’s not right.
Maybe they are in the temple in Salt Lake City…No, no that’s not right.
Maybe the Mormon exalted man god had them brought from earth and put in his study near his throne room which is nigh unto Kolob…Yea, that’s it.
