  • I'm glad to see the smoking bans. I would also like to see smoking banned inside your home and your car if you have children. I think smoking around children is the same as child abuse. If you want to kill yourself with cancer go right on ahead but you don't have the right to kill me or defenseless children

  • watch those cigarettes ladies, people like spencj (my comments) want to have all smokers executed. than i guess ugly people after that. so she's next anyway. hypocrites.

  • It is a PUBLIC health problem when I walk down the street and inhale your cigarette smoke. It's a private decision to be a moron and light up, it's a PUBLIC problem when public places allow smokers to fill the area with their toxic, noxious fumes. obviously the people of Ireland do not think it is nonsense, otherwise people would no longer be living and moving there. 3 million people die a year from smoke-related diseases.. INCLUDING non-smokers. so yes, they do get cancer from your cigarette.

  • LOL ur a re-tard. Its one personal choice. If what you are saying then why dont we ban fast food, cell phone, alcoholic , etc...

  • Ireland has an "office of tobacco control"???? Are you fucking kidding me? Banning smoking is one thing, but having an entire agency in gov't dedicated to getting people to quit is ludicrous. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm of the notion that people should be responsible for their own lives, and if some guy gets cancer due to smoking, it's his own fault. It's not the responsibility of gov't to bail him out or tell him "don't smoke!" I HATE nanny states like this. The War on Drugs also sucks

  • Nice job, aljazeera. Way to be "unbiased" by having 2 pro-smoking ban people and one guy who sounds like a moron defending the anti-smoking ban position.

  • Am I supposed to believe that, despite having known in public that smoking causes cancer for over 40 years, scientists have just recently discovered secondhand smoke's "effects"? I highly doubt it. Politics is driving science here, not the other way around. They're using manipulation to get what they want. In the long run, secondhand smoke really isn't that big a deal. It's nowhere near as dangerous as actually smoking. If you breathe a little, it's not ever get you addicted.

  • It's not like public places are SOO close together that everyone breathes in the smoke of a few smokers. Everyone knows that! So what's the big deal? Are you afraid breathing in a little smoke from 10 feet away, if at all possible, is really gonna give you cancer in a minute? Secondhand smoke is a total fraud. It amounts to little more than politically-motivated "science" that is baseless and studies which are very flawed. Why are they just now talking about it if it was such a problem?

  • They talk about "other people's rights" but what about the rights of smokers?? Why should I, if I decide to smoke, have to bend over backwards just because you or someone else near me (although tables in restaurants are usually well-spread out, for example) doesn't like it? I mean, if I'm at a table, and someone's at a table on the other side of the restaurant, why the fuck should it matter if I smoke?? It's not like that person is gonna get cancer or even breath in the smoke from so far away.

  • In Ireland and Italy you can't smoke in public AT ALL?? So where the fuck are you supposed to smoke? It seems like the only places left are your house, your car, and neighbors' houses if they allow. What a bunch of nonsense. And now France is gonna follow suit (or has). Europe is becoming way too liberal for their own good, I swear. I'm left-wing, but this is insane. Where are their balls?? Pussification of the West, I swear. There are more important issues tahn smoking, for god sakes.

  • Once again, the tyranny of the majority wins (if non-smokers who want bans are even a majority of Americans), this time with outrageous smoking bans. I wonder how they'd react if it was weed. Would they be as adamant to ban smoking in public places if it was marijuana rather than cigarettes? And what of those people, rare as they may be, who actually smoke weed in private but support these stupid bans nonetheless? Can you say HYPOCRITE?? Gov't shouldn't be the health "police." fuck that.

  • far enough??? Smoking bans are already going too far! Liberals in the US today have become a bunch of pansies. If you don't like smoking in a bar or restaurant, find one that has a non-smoking section, or GTFO! It's so simple. Why do these people feel the need to whine to gov't? What's next, a ban on junk food to 'curb' the obesity "epidemic"?

And btw, smoking is NOT a "public" health problem. It's a PRIVATE health problem for some. Individuals make the decision on their own.
