I added sky portal and daylight everything fine. But when I add other lights like shot light omni, they just don't light up. Does the sky portal suck up all the light in the scene?
oh wow just get out of here were not talking about skyportal, all i said was a standard setup for Mental ray, nothing to do with skyportal YET. Its Useful, but its now what i was talking about.
hey im very new to this and i use 3ds max 2012, i couldn't find the scene you used in my scenes folder, is it because im using a trial version, do i need to download it or what? thanks :)
@fotonyka big windows? really, we are dam architects for all i care i could have no windows, dont criticize and listen up, we work to our wants and our client's expectations if they ask for a 20 foot window we make a 20 foot window, if they ask for a 80 inch fan we incorporate a stylish 80 inch fan. oh and for that matter to work better i use a daylight system with mr default sky env with GI set to on and at default 500, not to mension the EV set to 12 - 15 for day and 2-5 for night scenes.
I do not criticize the size of the windows.. is stupid to think this... i criticize your method .. i say ..if you have BIG WINDOWS why dont use skyportal. this is the point : use of skyportal to approach your big windows.. i dont say ohhh big windows.. bad design..
exist a lot of technics to generate II.. gi+fg is only one of this... and is not the best... try with importons and IP.. and then we can talk.... or maybe try with iray...
@zidaneshake at render setup you can press f10 for shortcut to it, then go the render tab amd where it says frame buffer type set floating point 32 bits per channel
@RaudelSolis thanks man.. i was in a impression that if we set it to floating point it creates jagged edges at brighter objects like lamps etc.. hope that is not true..
This is pretty nice. I can't wait to see how it will work for my scene. Thank you for doing this tutorial and sharing it with the rest of us. >^_____^<

your workflow is not photo realistic...
you have big windows
why not use system daylight with skyportal plus fg plus gi
this is the best workflow if you want an interior with physical illumination

@fotonyka get out of here, IRAY? really if you did not notice this is for 3ds max 2010. not 2012
RaudelSolis 9 months ago
@RaudelSolis
2010-2011-2012 if you use GI+FG.. with big windows.. you NEED TO USE SKYPORTAL..
is the most professional method to work with mentalray..
read a mentalray book ..exist a lot ... and then make a good videotutorial...
or visit jeff patton or zap andersson blogs... maybe you can learn something....

why does it read 16 bit/channel instead of 32 bit/channel on render frame
realsoccerdude123 1 year ago
@realsoccerdude123 You need to manually set it to 32, 32 is the only setup you should use if your going for realism

@RaudelSolis how to set 32,32
