If you support the protestors so much, why not invite them to protest on YOUR personal private property? You can deal with all the lunitic behavior on your property. You have the right to assemble, you have a right for free speech. But these rights are NOT 100% absolute. If you want to assemble, if has to be lawful. There is laws what you can and can not do. Freedom of speech means that you have the right to speak without reprisal from the government. The University wanted this protest off of THEIR property, so the police was called. Police asked them to leave, they didnt. The protestors are in violation of the law at that point.
This is really scary. I know most people will see this as a horrible thing, but you have no idea until your friends and loved ones are out there getting beaten for just standing up for their beliefs. I hope everyone is safe and that nothing like this happens again.

I don't get it. The protest should not become about tents..everytime it is over the right to camp. Fuck the tents and just protest. I agree what the cops did is wrong..but stop fighting over the right to camp this serves no purpose and is a waste of energies. Get up each day and march. They did inform them of what would happen should they not comply, force was applied in accordance with the Supreme Court rulings on use of force cases. However, I do think you made valid and intelligent points on how these people should protest. Sadly, I think many involved with the movement have no real clue what they are protesting for and in turn the majority view them as uneducated idiots.

@aero2525 They already knew WAY beforehand during training that they couldn't make that many arrests. Apprehension is the first counter. Second offense (still causing a disturbance, and not complying) they're gonna spray people. They have no choice. Guns were never used, because thankfully, no one attacked them. They spray those who were arrested instead. They should be thankful. Not overreact to something they see skewed down to group interest on the internet.

Their policy clearly states that such rights as free speech and public assembly is not unlimited. Right of the University to establish rules and regulations governing the time, place and manner for the exercise of free speech and public assembly is governed by the courts and the university administration/officials. Enforced by the university police when that right is infringed.

Assembling on private property. Somebody has the right to call the police if they believe it to be getting out of line. First off, The officer announced that if they should continue their actions that they would be placed under arrest, not pepper spray them. Secondly, the students were not resisting arrest when the officers pepper sprayed them. This isn't something new for cops, they've always abused their authority, but this is going too far, they have their badge number hidden and they were the ones who started the physical contact. Shame on them. Seriously.

If you feel that your rights have been violated, then you go to the administration of the university and find out what it takes to hold a lawful assembly, You don't ignore the cops. If you do ignore the cops, then you get what you deserve. Would you just flip a cop off and not pull over if he got behind you and hit the flashers? Same thing.

However, despite any 'warnings', the students of UC Davis were singing their phrases, sitting down, and even socializing with other onlookers.
