@Microglia1 I recommend cheaper school bags if you're on a budget. My first bag was an $8 backpack from Target and it lasted years of about 20 pounds loaded in it, until the straps broke. If you have a little bit of money to spend, look at molle packs that fit you. You can find some at outdoor shops and military surpluses. Hope that helps.
why not use some velcro straps for the blanket/kitchen sink attachment you want. Just loop it in from the molle webbing from the exterior pocket above.
Question: Are you able to fit all of that gear in there with a full hydration bladder? I own the Monsoon Gearslinger and I carry a similar gear setup and even though the Monsoon is 1600cu'in, it's still a tight fit with a full 3L hydration bladder.
I own this bag, I'm ex military, and have used alot of equipment over the years. This bag is great, as long as you don't load it too heavy. It's designed for light loads. If loaded too heavy, the single shoulder strap will just kill your back after carrying it all day.
the V strap is made for carrying things like the fleece sleeping bag exactly like you demonstrated at 7:20, it personally does the job, your not going to be carrying a lot of weight in it, it's just not made for it .
you didn't think of the attachment ladder on the side of the pack for attaching the sleeping bag either, since it's made to hold upright items, just use small bungee cords to attach it to the pack.
@GBlues1 That Y strap is meant to haul the sleeping bag or bedroll but, as he demonstrates, it's not designed right. It is also so cut up with pouches and compartments that it has little usable capacity for its size. I wouldn't buy this thing. Looks like a poser wanna'be mall-soldier bag.
Buy some nylon webing and sew it on the bottom thats what I do. I will put a vid up about it. And if the blader pouch does not have a web hook sew one in so the blader is not moving.
hey kevin, i know you like military stuff like alice packs...if you search for a pack, with webbing at the bottom, molle etc....look for the BlackHawk "HydraStorm S.T.R.I.K.E. Cyclone 100oz Hydration Pack"...for 3years now, i go fishing, on camping trips etc with this pack and it was a pleasure...i hope it makes you happy too^^
if you want something better, and for probably half the price...get the camo RIBZ pack...fits in front of ya, instead of the back,....its cooler feeling in the summer heat we have here in SC, and it holds all I need for extended time in the woods, up to 5 days, with the exception of my water system..which I keep on my hip in a seperate carrier anyway.
Yes, it would be nice to have webbing all around - but Maxpedition doesnt make a secret of it. So, before you buy something, take a look at it and you wont be that surprised. You want something big with webbing on every side? try the Sabrecat Waistpack if you dont want a Backpack.
This was some nice close-up video of this pack... but you are complaining that a screwdriver can't be used as a hammer. The gear slinger is meant to be SLUNG... so the 3/4 access is intentional and that's why what you called the "bottom" can also be the side. Look at some other review of the Sikta and Kodiak on YouTube and you will see how this pack was meant to be used. You should review it from the designer's intention, not how you would use it not as meant... that's a more fair review.
I would agree with everything you stated about additional webbing had the pack been a double shoulder support type. I just don't personally think that a slinger needs the same depth of flexibility that a normal backpack needs. Regardless, this was a great video and thank you for taking the time to bring it to us.
Nice review...I always kinda thought the gearslinger collection was kinda cool (Sitka and Kodiac) for an edc bag. Not quite sure I would use it for and overnighter because I do not think it would have the volume to carry all my gear and the one strap carry option doesnt displace weight evenly across the back IMO. I enjoy carrying the Fatboy too for edc. If Im doin overnighters, I will usually stick with Condor or Vulture.
I think you're pushing the "gearslinger" into a role it wasn't really intended for. I don't think it was intended to be an overnight backpack. You may have been better with a Falcon II "backpack". Good review though and I could see myself using the Kodiak as a day pack.
I agree with you that a pack should always have webbing/straps on the top or bottom for the reasons you state. Lack of webbing really limits the packs use.
For part 2, I'm most curious about the comfort and endurance for have a one-strap pack, meaning, with this sling fully-loaded, wouldn't you be better off with a 2 shoulder strap traditional backpack? If it is comfortable enough, what is the benefit of a one-strap sling over a 2 strap pack?
Took this pack to Israel with me and it was awesome! It was my first Maxpedition pack but definitely not my last :)

@Jdog5785 It is a nice pack. I was curious what you could do with an Alice pack but, I typed too much with the last post so, I removed it.

Loosen the y strap and use it to carry your fleece bag on the top of the bag instead of the bottom. Problem solved bro! :)

always appreciate vids, do you have a recommendation for a pack similar to the kodiak gearslinger but at a less advanced price?
DavidML777 1 year ago
lol, that was the first think I thought off. It needs webbing on the bottom.

I do not like the black zipper on green material. Use green zippers people come on.

Really enjoyed the detail of the review. IMHO you would be better served with a traditional, two shoulder strap backpack.

maxpedition gear would be perfect for half the price
johannes208 1 year ago
Oh and I agree the ability to attach to the bottom would be great. Even if they just put the loops so you can add the straps would be great!

Why not run the straps of the sleeping bag through the PALS webbing on the large exterior compartment?
