In Georga at Ft Gordon we burned coal 40 years ago we could never clean the baracks where you could not wipe down top of door or heater vents and get black. I had the duty of keepint the furnices lit. The day was fine just load with coal and close the vents night when it was cold had to fill the furnice 4 or 5 tomes shut the vents about 10 ang went to bed load up first thing in morning. A long time ago I live in natural gas country now.

Please no more coal. The world needs less carbon to stay livable. Trees at least absorb as much carbon as they put out when burned, plus they're local and renewable. Pellets are clean, but wood gasification boilers are even better.
Why does everyone have the stoves installed with such a short length of the smoke stack inside their home? One would think that much more heat could be extracted from this alternative heat source,(stove), from the radiant heat of the smoke stack as well. Only major concern would be the inadvertant emission of Carbon Monoxide within the house or soot build-up inside the stack. Other minor concern would be how to regulate that added radiant heat.
well just now got to the comp. i agree with you but for a wood stove, the coal stove pipe is warm to the touch you can almost hold your hand on it for 20 seconds but buy no means are you woung
Just now got to the comp. its not that messy aslong as you buy pre washed coal, but even that it is a little dusty when you pore it in. ive fond the room that the stove is in gets alitle dusty like above door and window sill but thats it. I burn buckwheat coal costed 800.00 this year four 4 ton and delivery versus burning wood and spending all the time cuting and spliting, i now just work some overtime and still dont no what to do with my spare time lol
