Lots of butter and then thin vegemite but in chunks in some areas and you have to put on literally straight away after toast pops up - I even put my second piece back down while I make my first piece - it's gotta be all melted and soggy!! Yum yum yum!!!
I love Vegemite- My friend came over to the states on Holiday, and taught me to eat it just like you prepared it.... I loved it. I like to spread it a bit thicker now... but it is great stuff!
personally i like it smothered on real heavy (around 1.5 Tablespoons), but for a first time eater, especially if your not from Australia, lots of butter and dab the Vegemite on.
What is vegemite anyway? Is it veggies? Is it mites? As an american, I will probably never get to find out. i go to the store,fINALLY I FOUND VEGEMITE, , somebody comes up and says, AUSSIES HAVE HORRIBLE TASTE, DONT GET IT!
the real way to have vegemite, as I was shown by two queenslanders, toast 1 bit of bread, use vegemite instead of margarine, then place cheese over the top, and put one piece of untoasted bread on top of that. its unbeatable.
It's true that vegemite on its own isn't that tasty. But it isn't "vegemite" that people like, it's "vegemite mixed with butter or margarine" that people like. You need to apply vegemite in "dabs" on top of a generous spread of butter or margarine in order to appreciate what a taste sensation this humble, American-owned Aussie invention is all about. Both the butter and vegemite must cover the entire piece of bread or toast right up to the edges. Enjoy.
The problem with Americans is they are so used to having their food filled with high fructose corn syrup that they can't take the bitter taste or marmite, probably why bud light is so popular the wimpy version or a wimpy beer.
As an american who has lived in new zealand for the better part of 15 years Vegemite has really grown on me and I spread it properly as well.
i just but some butter onto the sandwich without spreading it, then i add the vegemite to it, spreading them together. saves time and it tastes better
Butter is a *must*, Vegemite doesn't taste all too good if it's by itself on toast IMO. x) I was able to get a nice little jar of Vegemite here in the States, in a "world market" where they sell foods, furniture, and novelty items imported from different countries. I think I'll try this with some cheese next...
@TheSilverTails Try Meijers. They sell just about EVERYTHING. :P A few years ago, I was buying biscotti at Krogers. They don't sell it any more. I don't know what grocers do besides Meijers. They have just about every food imaginable in their international aisle. It really is amazing. I just bought marmite for the first time tonight. I'm still putting off trying it (for the first time). LOL
I tried vegemite today for the first time and I must say, I like it! Just wondering do you Aussies only eat it with butter, because I think it mite be good with some cheese too
well, that is better than what some people have done. yes i am talking to you shane dawson! basically, to all you non-aussies out there that think they know everything about vegemite, just letting you know it's all about getting your ratios right. if it tastes too strong then you've got too much. just be thankful that it's not as salty as it apparently used to be before they "dumbed it down" if you don't mind me quoting my mother.
Less is more. Remember that Vegemite is only marginally less strong than Thermite. Oh and when trying for the first time use a hot toasted crumpet, spread some butter (not margerine) on the crumpet and then add about the equivalent of a 20 cent piece's worth of Vegemite. if you are American and use more than this make sure your health insurance is up to date. Only real Australians are sufficiently conditioned to handle that degree of Vegemite.
@PWBERRETT Had Vegemite grilled cheese sandwiches when I was a kid and I'm from Canada... Can't find the stuff anywhere these days, I'd love to get my kids to taste it!
americans and vegemite. it's always a facepalm situation. don't eat it with a spoon. it's like salt, a little bit goes a long way. would you eat a teaspoon of salt? yeah same thing. ofcourse it taste shit straight lol. people might like it if they knew how to use it correctly lol. spread it like this guy..or thinner.. keep thinning it out until it taste good.. choose your own butter to vegemite ratio and you'll find the magic spot lol.
you have to use butter not margarine cause that stuff is gross and it must be as soon as u get the toast out of the toaster so it is all melted and gooey then u put the thin layer of veg on right away and enjoy it is an aquired taste yes you need to just keep trying it and dont expect it to taste like chocolate either like a lot of people do cause it is nothing like chocolate
best way to have vegemite is put the marg on straight after its toasted so it melts into the bread (spread it all the way to the sides... none of this in the middle crap, nice and thick too) then dollop on a large amount (i go about a tablespoon) of vegemite right in the middle and squash it out but dont spread it evenly cause the bursts of the mite when your eating it is the best part :D or just eat it off the spoon and stop being fancy lolol
Thanks man. I bought some vegemite the other day and it was incredibly expensive. I'd never had it so I decided to try it on bread. Needless to say...It tasted like spreadable soy sauce. I was going to try a grilled cheese with some vegemite but I think I'll just try this.
Vegimite rules! I absolutely love it! Great breakfast, makes you feel great too. I like it on a rye cracker (or crisp, depending on your nationality) with some margerine. Actually better than bacon, seriously! Don't understand how anyone can talk about it like it's some leper's three day old moldy diarrhea. Just do what this guy says and you'll love it. Well done Australia, nice to see something without corn syrup, yellow #5, red lake, trans fat, pharmacuticals, David Bowies duck butter..
I just bought some. Couldn't really afford the $6 but I was so surprised to see it and I felt I owed Australia an apology on behalf of all sane men (It IS an Aussie icon...). I myself am a product of the fine English Savannah Georgia penal colony USA, and Vegimite can't be as bad as Beefarino in a can...So maybe, just maybe, I can 'send it down' without any 'Return Postage'. So.... 'Br'upp!!!', and again, sorry about that legal jack hole stuff about folates. Cheers.
They actually outlawed...that's right-Outlawed.....(I'll pause here for you to think that one through because they didn't) Vegimite here in the states for a short while!!! Why? Because it contains Folate (A form of Vitamin B), and there is some obscure (i.e. 'Mental') law that forbids it in any food other than cereals... Obviously they repealed that law (It is something of an Aussie icon...) after all the outrage from Aussies and Yanks alike ( see 2)

You can't learn to like vegemite. It's something that is harcoded into the genes of all Australians, and henceforth nobody, sadly, can ever like it if they weren't born here.
I like to spread it all over me fingers on one hand, sometimes with a little nuts. Then I reach underneath the stall at a public bathroom and say "excuse me, may i hav some paper?"
serously tho, my friend just returned from aus and brought me back some vegemite. I'm so happy!
though i prefer it with butter.. and i spread it thinly... in my opinion, if it starts burning your throat and makes you want to gag, its too thick. It should by salty. but not all happy and light.. its like its evil and deadly and dark... and just so damn delicious
i tried it in barcelona, there were some aussies in our hostel and i must say you can't possibly like it the first time you try it :D it tastes like.. god theres no way to explain haha!
The BEST way to eat vegemite (and Im aussie,so my recommendation is official)Follow these instructions:
1.Butter some sliced white bread
2.Spread very thin layer of Vegemite
3.Top with a slice of cheddar cheese(or cheese of ur choice)
4.Throw under th grill til cheese melts
5.Enjoy the hell out of it..YUM!
like this guy sed, thin spread of vegemite is essential.Too much can b overbearing 4 those not used to the taste.and please buy the Kraft one,not the imitations(like mitey mite or sum crap)
With regards to imitations... ESPECIALLY do not buy Marmite. No matter what the English and Kiwis may say, Marmite pales in comparison with Vegemite...
the only similar product i've tried that i like is Bovril.. it's still not the same though.. as it's made from beef I guess.. and more syrupy.. still quite nice though
I sure would like a jar of Vegemite. I don't know of anywhere to get it here in the states. Never had it myself, but I'm almost positive I would find it quite superb.
I'd completely understand if thats the way they found out. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and the first thing I wanna do is shag my jar of vegemite...
I'm from Ukraine and my science teacher from australia gave me to try vegemite and put 0.4 cm thick layer on my bread. I bit off half of it and it was horrible only because it felt too salty.
I had a stomach ache after that. Now I will know how much of it should I use ^.^
Mine came today, ordered it from ebay. Not easy for us Americans to find. Taking the horror stories into account, I was careful with the amount and expected something close to what I tasted, so it worked out pretty good for me. Tastes like ramen noodle seasoning, a bit cheesy and of vitamins. Pretty good already, though.
I liked it just fine even without butter on crackers.
Thank you for enlightening me. I just purchased some Vegemite and lathered in on peanut butter style. I promptly gagged into the sink. I'll have to give this another go with far less Vegemite.
Halleleuiah! The right way =] I go to the edges but it's all about personal preference. Thanks for the making the video I never got around to making: How to eat it the RIGHT way =] 5 Stars

the only similar product i've tried that i like is Bovril.. it's still not the same though.. as it's made from beef I guess.. and more syrupy.. still quite nice though

I sure would like a jar of Vegemite. I don't know of anywhere to get it here in the states. Never had it myself, but I'm almost positive I would find it quite superb.

Vegemite causes yeast infections of the intestines and vagina. LOL.

I'd completely understand if thats the way they found out. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and the first thing I wanna do is shag my jar of vegemite...

Ohhhh!!! It must taste good like this.
I'm from Ukraine and my science teacher from australia gave me to try vegemite and put 0.4 cm thick layer on my bread. I bit off half of it and it was horrible only because it felt too salty.
I had a stomach ache after that. Now I will know how much of it should I use ^.^
Thanks for this video.
P.S. Is this paste quite healthy or something?

Mine came today, ordered it from ebay. Not easy for us Americans to find. Taking the horror stories into account, I was careful with the amount and expected something close to what I tasted, so it worked out pretty good for me. Tastes like ramen noodle seasoning, a bit cheesy and of vitamins. Pretty good already, though.
I liked it just fine even without butter on crackers.

Ramen, nor vegemite contain any valuable amount of any kind of nutrient. They're pure table salt.
ByeByeBelly 3 years ago
Vegemite has a substantial amount of B vitamins, but much like ramen I think the reason behind eating it isn't health.
frigginjoe 3 years ago 2
Vegemite is full of vitamin B not just salt and it is made from yeast extract as for Ramen i never heard of it

I live in California, and I buy my vegemite from Cost Plus World Market... =)

Thank you for enlightening me. I just purchased some Vegemite and lathered in on peanut butter style. I promptly gagged into the sink. I'll have to give this another go with far less Vegemite.

i wanna try it so bad. Is there anyway i can order it to the US?
schony66 3 years ago
There are a lot of sites on the web that sell Vegemite; e-bay is another place you can get it. I love it!
And he is so right! You must spread it very thinly or otherwise it'll be way too strong and salty.

awesome, thank you =]

He still puts on more than I would. I like that 2.5 to 1 ratio Ryelle suggests.

ummm...whats vegemite?
boredhero2 3 years ago
Nah too much for Americans. They are still adverse to this much. A ratio that I have found works well is 2.5 marg to 1 vegemite.
