I know this would be a lot to do considering a remake but... in Japan they don't have the same copyright rules as they do in America. You can legally remake it over there. I know a few people who produced a street fighter clone and also fatal fake. Traditionally, imitation is the greatest compliment right?
In addition, I'm not sure if you could get the rights to it to sell it. I think Akira Toriyama still retains the rights most of the key elements of the game and square-enix owns the rest.
I like, but did you guys really have to go with an art direction inspired by Akira Toriyama's PSX cutscene videos? Crono looks like a retard the way Toriyama drew him. I'd go with a more Nomura-inspired or even Ghibli look. But then I've never been able to stand anything that even slightly resembles DBZ...

This had so much potential. The animation looks better than half the games made now! and this was originaly done for the n64! This still makes fans of the game moist with anticipation. Sqaure needs to pull thier thumbs outta thier asses and get this thing going.

I think the main problem is that Square is focusing too much on the Final Fantasy series.
Square needs to start focusing more on the Chrono series. At least revive the Chrono series by putting Chrono Cross on PSN and make Chrono Crisis, Break, and Resurrection.
@wootsausemanman Ik. Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy have a huge fanbase, so does the Chrono Trigger series,but Square doesn't focus on that series that much anymore... Lavos is destroyed, so there's not much Square Enix can do after that...
So, for them making another RPG series or continuing the Chrono series will be tough since they haven't thought of the main plot yet...
@wootsausemanman I seen the squeal and the ending. If they plan to revive the series, then they have to make an antagonist of the game since Lavos (the main antagonist of the series) got destroyed. They can continue after Chrono Cross or start a new plot. :/
Honestly I dont thing CT needs a graphical update, it still looks great. The sprites and environments have held up surprisingly well. Of course I'm a bit biased, I'd take sprites over 3d models any day of the week.
That being said I would play this game and LOVE every second of it. How could you NOT enjoy CT?

I can sort of understand why Square decided to shut this down. While the team that worked on this did a great job, their vision isn't necessarily the same as the true makers' vision was. I mean, the visuals are nice but something about it seems stale compared to how I imagined the original. I want another Chrono Trigger as much as anyone else, but ya gotta trust Square's decision. More likely than not they saw elements that didn't fit CT in this, and didn't want the original idea changed.

copyright... that was the problem. they were making a remake of the game from Square Enix and that's against the law unless they buy the rights to do it. And the game wasn't supposed to be free. It was supposed to go to N64. So Square Enix had reasons to do this... althought I think it was just wrong, they could at least do some collab work, like with Disney in Kingdom Hearts. This could be a great remake :(

I've never seen a company, in this case Square, making so many wrong decisions in such a short period of time. They are managing to bury the name it has built over couple of decades, in no time. Destroyed Final Fantasy franchise to reach new fans, losing the old ones... didnt manage to get new ones with this maneuver... And small decisions like this of cancelling such a nice project, instead of hiring this team of developers. The time of good games with plot and "turns" is surelly over.
In fact I dont think this was the problem. Enix made quite a few wonderful games, such as the Dragon Quest series, Valkyrie Profile also. I just think Square has a very poor strategist team ahead of their business decisions. Why change something that was working perfectly? Also, why insist on something that doesnt work that well?
the fact that Square's catering to their "worst" fanbase is really depressing. And by the worst I'm referring to the rampant fans of Final Fantasy VII.
Than again they must be getting their shit together since they've released the remake of Final Fantasy IV, and the rereleases of Dragon Quest 4-6, and Chrono Trigger. They even have a new franchise coming soon, but who knows if it'll have any merit.
All we can hope for in the future is the possibility of a make-over of Final Fantasy 6
I believe that the decision to rerelease old games without improvements, and by this I mean, real improvements in graphics, sound, add-ons etc is only a proof of the discredit of the company. They notice they are sinking with new projects each time worse, but try to hold their grounds by trying to please old fans and squeeze some dimes from them with such releases but only showing where the real investment is destined to... yes, another "action" game passing for Final Fantasy.
I do like how they chose to use "what's his name"'s anime-stylings :P you know, the creator of the Dragonballz Anime-style, whom also created the image on the front of the CT box :P

Legally, they can't. That's why it was cancelled in the first place--Square-Enix threatened legal action against them if they didn't stop (despite the fact that there was never any intention to profit off this game, although since I don't know much about copyright law, I shouldn't say anything).
Square Enix technically had nothing to do with it, the company is just so huge that the little stuff goes unnoticed, I'm not sure the owners of Square even realize Chrono Ressurection even existed, they're too busy enjoying their fortune :P while an evil marketing department runs their company... it happens when a company becomes too big, take Blizzard for example, look at that god-awful MMORPG they made, it was so horrible, the original warcraft creators QUIT!
Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Star Ocean2, and Star Ocean1 (dejap patch w/ emu), are in my opinion the best RPGs ever made... although CC's combat system / lack of plot until the end was annoying. But theres about 30 FFs if not more, and 2 Chronos? 3 counting Radical Dreamers but that was like 10 hour game play doing all 7 senerios +2 bonus and it was Text Based. This is plain ridiculous, a Chrono Resurection would be awesome. It has so much potential and so many people around the world love it.
I mostly agree. Those 4 are my favorite games too. And it's true that CC's plot wasn't as good as CT's, that's why I prefer the latter. But I think CC battle system was a good attempt and an example from the time when Square-Enix (Squaresoft back then) still took some risks.
Anyway, FF is a mediocre concept when you compare it to that of Chrono Saga. Their endless expanding of FF would be totally uncalled for if they weren't craving for money and so many gamers weren't so easily deceived by fancy crap.
AGreed. SE needs to stop milking FF and DQ -- they are good RPGs, but they are overpopularized. Chrono and Star Ocean need more love, as they are what, 2-, 3-hit wonders? (A 4th SO is in the works) Right now SO is getting a deserved spotlight. I just wait for Chrono's turn.

@wootsausemanman I seen the squeal and the ending. If they plan to revive the series, then they have to make an antagonist of the game since Lavos (the main antagonist of the series) got destroyed. They can continue after Chrono Cross or start a new plot. :/

Honestly I dont thing CT needs a graphical update, it still looks great. The sprites and environments have held up surprisingly well. Of course I'm a bit biased, I'd take sprites over 3d models any day of the week.
That being said I would play this game and LOVE every second of it. How could you NOT enjoy CT?

The present SE will never be as detailed as this, why? Because they only care about the money. They don't "care" about the "soul", only the fans respect the game. I can sort of understand why Square decided to shut this down. While the team that worked on this did a great job, their vision isn't necessarily the same as the true makers' vision was. I mean, the visuals are nice but something about it seems stale compared to how I imagined the original. I want another Chrono Trigger as much as anyone else, but ya gotta trust Square's decision. More likely than not they saw elements that didn't fit CT in this, and didn't want the original idea changed.

they produce wack ass games since the fusion with enix. squaresoft were THE rpg masters for consolegames and produced one mature masterpiece after another. now they make silly as conversions of great games in a very childish way. they arent capabale anymore to produce classic rpgs and they neither remake old classic games into recent platforms in a MATURE way not with silly ass child graphics but for ps3 or xbox360 with great graphics

I was really upset when I heard that they were going to scrap this. But at the same time, when you really consider it, it might have been for thebest. Some things are best just left classics. I just find it a shame that there aren't any good RPG's like Chrono Trigger being made anymore.

wow, what a stunning looking game. I love how the graphics are bright and colorful as opposed to the dark, brown ones that are so common in modern games. I don't think I've seen anything quite like this--so according to everyone this game is officially canceled then?

copyright... that was the problem. they were making a remake of the game from Square Enix and that's against the law unless they buy the rights to do it. And the game wasn't supposed to be free. It was supposed to go to N64. So Square Enix had reasons to do this... althought I think it was just wrong, they could at least do some collab work, like with Disney in Kingdom Hearts. This could be a great remake :(

This deserves to be done by square, as they were the ones who send the cease and desist letters to these guys.If they dont want fans working in remakes, then they must make one decent themselves.Also, now its easier to find half of the dream team, as toriyama usually works in dragonquest, and horii is at hand, and as most of the music was done by Yasunori Mitsuda, and in part by uetmasu, i think they arent that hard to contact. jazz+metal+orchestra versions by the black mages would be awesome...

Actually it's not the whole game, just a remake of some parts (Like the beginning, the Zenan Bridge, the final battle, etc.)
...And that's why they shouldn't have cancelled it. Chances are Square didn't even know it wasn't a full remake... *Sigh*

I've never seen a company, in this case Square, making so many wrong decisions in such a short period of time. They are managing to bury the name it has built over couple of decades, in no time. Destroyed Final Fantasy franchise to reach new fans, losing the old ones... didnt manage to get new ones with this maneuver... And small decisions like this of cancelling such a nice project, instead of hiring this team of developers. The time of good games with plot and "turns" is surelly over.

In fact I dont think this was the problem. Enix made quite a few wonderful games, such as the Dragon Quest series, Valkyrie Profile also. I just think Square has a very poor strategist team ahead of their business decisions. Why change something that was working perfectly? Also, why insist on something that doesnt work that well?

the fact that Square's catering to their "worst" fanbase is really depressing. And by the worst I'm referring to the rampant fans of Final Fantasy VII.
Than again they must be getting their shit together since they've released the remake of Final Fantasy IV, and the rereleases of Dragon Quest 4-6, and Chrono Trigger. They even have a new franchise coming soon, but who knows if it'll have any merit.
All we can hope for in the future is the possibility of a make-over of Final Fantasy 6

I believe that the decision to rerelease old games without improvements, and by this I mean, real improvements in graphics, sound, add-ons etc is only a proof of the discredit of the company. They notice they are sinking with new projects each time worse, but try to hold their grounds by trying to please old fans and squeeze some dimes from them with such releases but only showing where the real investment is destined to... yes, another "action" game passing for Final Fantasy.

Legally, they can't. That's why it was cancelled in the first place--Square-Enix threatened legal action against them if they didn't stop (despite the fact that there was never any intention to profit off this game, although since I don't know much about copyright law, I shouldn't say anything).

Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Star Ocean2, and Star Ocean1 (dejap patch w/ emu), are in my opinion the best RPGs ever made... although CC's combat system / lack of plot until the end was annoying. But theres about 30 FFs if not more, and 2 Chronos? 3 counting Radical Dreamers but that was like 10 hour game play doing all 7 senerios +2 bonus and it was Text Based. This is plain ridiculous, a Chrono Resurection would be awesome. It has so much potential and so many people around the world love it.

I mostly agree. Those 4 are my favorite games too. And it's true that CC's plot wasn't as good as CT's, that's why I prefer the latter. But I think CC battle system was a good attempt and an example from the time when Square-Enix (Squaresoft back then) still took some risks.
