From what Obaid said it doesn't dictate in the Qu'ran that you must hit them.

I don't like violence at all, i have a terrible temper and I try to avoid getting annoyed at all costs because I know that I have this problem.

My point is, how can you have a rule to do something that is morally wrong!!!. No matter how you beat your wife, your still beating her!!!. The guy actively encourages it!.

Well the verse clearly shows that violence IS the last resort. Second, if the woman is right, then he has absolutely no right to beat her. You may argue that he might do so nevertheless, well, then the same applies to the woman, it would be defying the religious text

Bro, it isn't even violence. The hadiths clearly say that this "beating" is only tapping; it CANNOT leave a mark, and it CANNOT bring about pain, or else you are sinning. So the term "beating" is used w/ qualification - it isn't the way we mean it in english (to inflict pain on someone else). A man is in sin if he doesn't make his wife happy. Besides, the sura talks about all of the rights the woman has before mentioning "beating." Salaam.

see, I was with you up to the point about wife beating. In the west, we find that sort of behaviour unacceptable. In fact, at our best we would deplore any and all violence, especially against someone that is weaker than you. you wanna get into a fight with someone that can defend them selves, that's your business, that's just a fight, I wouldn't wanna do that aether as I hate violence, but to hit someone that is weaker than you are is bullying.
