  • Sandy Denny and the Fairport Covention also planted their roots in FM Rock, vinyl world with milk crates to house your collection. Sandy Denny was an exceptional vocalist with a touch of Judy Collins and really inventive.Who knows where the time goes is a cover of a Judy Collins song although I am not sure whether the group or Judy penned it.

  • Just beautiful....

  • Unique talent and voice!

  • the Platonic Form of Sublimity

  • Simply breathtaking!

  • Immortelle chanson.

  • Can't say what's more powerful, Sandy Denny's vocal or Richard Thompson's incomparable guitar work.

  • Oh the voice, the memories God be good to her. First heard her this song on the radio in the late 60's and you know it sounds just as as stunning today over 40 years later.

  • FC was quite a corporate phenomenon.

  • @jkovert

So you're a corporate shill, than?

  • Pure Class -That says it all.

  • This is not "a song", this is "The Song"

  • @Rododactylos

    O RLY??

  • My life song, this is how it is....

  • Just absolute top song. What a voice.

  • I've been listening to music for over 30 years now but this song ( and this version in particular ) is as close to perfection as any song can get !!!!!

  • I grew up listening to fairport convention..sandy denny had the most amazing voice..I always wanted to sing like her as a little girl..

  • @18DreamDiva Me too, and when I couldn't I stopped singing! But what a sublime voice, thank God we have these recordings to remind us.

  • What a sad bland and boring planet this would be without the poetry of the Irish. God bless her.

  • @aglindh

    m8 she was english ?? and dis song int irish m8 stupid . . .. idiot . . . .

  • Hypnotically transports me back to such sweet memories, thanks.

  • Beautiful voice.

  • A blessed soul, though I believe I have to say Judy Collins voice is equal if not surpassing (as well as Joan Baez, all politics aside).

  • Nice singing!

  • .....

una delle più belle voci del folk

  • i hope people who have seen jerusalem, listen to more of their songs, this brilliant

  • brilliant

  • Beautifuf voice, undrestated renditin... Wonderful.

  • I truly believe that Sandy Denny was touched by the hand of god. Such talent, wisdom and humility. I listen to her wonderful voice and lyrics, she paints pictures in my mind and touches my soul, I weep. I do hope that this dear, dear lady has now returned to the place and time whence she came and is at peace with the universe. She is deeply revered and missed.

  • @Baigentification

    STOP . . . . . .

    NOW GO.

  • this is in jerusalem, and its used very well

  • An incredible tune...never get tired of this...touches me deeply

  • cerebral haemorrhage = pissed. Do her a service and don't disguise it

  • There is a moment in the play "Jerusalem," where the main character puts on a vinyl copy of this song on the record player, and all else is quiet and Sandy Denny's voice fills the theater. I lost it -- at that moment. It was all I could do to keep from sobbing out loud. A perfect amalgam of a poignant brilliant play, a great performance by the lead actor, Mark Rylance...and then wham -- there is Sandy singing this song.

  • ............it's not just that melancholy voice but also that understated accompiment...beautiful

  • one of the best guitar performces i will ever hear. inever tire of it

  • I like what andreaneilcmc said! our so right!

  • SIMPLY ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS OF ALL TIME...R.I.P. SANDY WE LOVE YA...........

  • after a long night of beer aggresion debate and violence both god allah the demonds and angels became silent and listened to this song, many times.

    great tune. xxxxx

  • WOW!!!!

  • So very glad I heard Sandy on BBC the other night. No comment required, just

    listen.

  • Amidst Led Zeppelin and all the great rock bands emerging in that time, there was also Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention. Wonderful memories back then of my highschool days 1970 :D

  • Sandy, I wish I could save you.

    Now you're an angel.

  • This is stunning.

  • cant get close

  • beautiful, timeless..such a classic....

  • Reminds me of everyone that's now gone. Beautiful Song Beautiful Voice

  • I just want to know where the time went?

  • takes me back .

  • I love this, such a lovely voice, she adds such atmosphere. I also like "Ill keep it with mine" very similar to this

  • 18 dislikes...Are they ill!!!..Sacriledge...PPL are entitled to their opinion . but well...

not liking this is almost a criminal offencs

  • Does it get better than this?

  • I heard both Judy Collins and Sandy Denny's version of "Do You Know Where The Time Goes" in Starbuck Coffee (Southern California) the other day, they even played "First Girl I Loved" by Incredible String Band, great taste, I think I have to buy back some Starbuck stocks...

  • @Gerryofcalifornia Dude get over Starbucks they just play that beautiful music to try and say hey were hip we are one of you folk/rock loving hippies. Bullshit they're are Greedy Corporate America and will try to capitilize on anything. Your intellilect, your emotions, your associations...remember they're the 1%.

  • There is a version where Sandy is (I think) accompanying herself on 12-string guitar, and it's much better than this.

  • @alphasun1 There is a version when Sandy was with the Strawbs...which is beautiful too

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful english folk music which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • This shit takes me back to a time in my youth that will never again be duplicated!!!

  • La +bella voce inglese

  • SANDY FOR EVER

  • brilliant singer, but in my opinion Ralph McTell is allways going to be the best

  • blows my mind..what a voice..what a loss..

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs to ever to be put to pad and pencil.

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written, Sandy or Judy's version which is better doesn't matter, they're both great, the only difference I think is British folk is usually more melancholic, sometimes I don't even have the courage to listen to Sandy's version or songs like "First Girl I loved" by Incrediabele String Band ( Judy's version is "First Boy I Loved")...

The saddest thing in life is the passing of time and the losing of lovers and friends, don't you agree?

  • Couldnt agree more with the description

  • Questa donna e questa canzone mi sono entrate nel cuore...da anni...

  • judy collins did this.....well. she had a lot to live up too.... beautiful.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summers end. they write beautiful folk which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • Sandy Denny wrote this magnificent song at age 18; it has been recorded by so many artists...very evocative..What a legacy of beautiful songs she left us...

  • Who Knows Where The Time Goes - Fairport Convention [England] - 1969 - "AMG Pick. Melodically, the song matches the subtlety of the lyrics perfectly, with a vaguely country-infused electric guitar from Richard Thompson, which echoes the twilight agenda that is the basis for Sandy Denny's poetry." - No More Sad Refrains [import] [Original Recordings Remastered] (Universial Japan) [Disc 1]-2008.

NOTE: Her haunting vocals are some of the BEST you'll ever hear, And This Japanese Import is the BEST.

  • unspeakable beautiful

  • I'm not sure what a "Sod" is and I'm not sure what "shite" is, but I know...

that that this Red-Neck Texan, Nam Vet, of the same generation, is moved to tears every time I hear this wonderful ballad by this Lovely Lady. I never knew Sandy Denny, but I miss her severely! What a magnificent talent!!!

    May God Bess Sandy Denny.

  • @jjacktex

good post jtex - Sandy Denny has one of those rare voices that grabs your soul. Karen Carpenter had it as did Kate Bush if you have ever heard "the Man with the Child in eyes." Beautiful haunting and sad. RIP Sandy and Karen

  • @jjacktex: Hats off to you!...well said!

  • @jjacktex I was SO-OOOO lucky to have actually seen her myself with Fairport Convention performing at Philadelphia's Academic Of Music in 1976, when I hear people write things like this. (Tom Waits opened for them)

  • @jjacktex

sod = sodomite. shite = shit.

  • @jjacktex just could not add to that - just beautiful

  • 709,783 people liked this in 2011 Wow! there are so many poor sods out there yet to appreciate such great music. I love this song.

  • 709,783 people liked this in 2011 Wow! there are so many poor sods out there!

  • One of my favourite songs of all time, love lying back relaxing and listening to this ..... heaven :-]

  • What an amazing singer. This is REAL MUSIC , kids. Stick your Rap and Hip-Hop shite , LISTEN AND LEARN HOW REAL MUSIC IS MADE BY REAL MUSICIANS. Not some untalented twat with a keyboard , samples or a drum machine.

  • It always depends on Sandy's superb voice...yes, one can't negate the influence of the band as a whole..but...what a voice!!

  • Why all this dissecting? This is simply a beautiful song sung by a magnificent singer.

    Q.E.D

  • Goddess!

  • I just love Sandy Denny!

  • And fuck everyone who thinks this wasn't the greatest band that ever played British folk musik! I love Sandy Denny.

  • Jesus. What a voice. What a band. . . What a song. Too bad brilliance like this is just not around. And even if it were, most of todays music listening audience is absolutely clueless.

  • @M3CoupeC50 Nope. No. No. Wrong.

  • also

    lovely slideshow here

    thanks so much

  • that Thompson guitar always sounds so wonderfully CLOSE on this, doesn't it

    a sheer gem

and so sorry I won't be at Cropredy tomorrow night

because there is still some real magic down there

  • "Niet leuk" bestaat niet. Iets is goed of niet goed. Dit lied en de visualisatie ervan is prachtig.

  • I wish Sandy had stayed longer at the "Fairport Fair." Together they made folk history and they gave one another support. In breaking away Sandy tested her independence and in later years had her life fall apart. We miss her so and wish things had been different. Early spirit and trying others' songs, old and new, made the group a success.

  • What makes this really special is the understated instrumentation from Richard Thompson et al. It gives Denny the perfect platform. If the musicians had been more selfish, it wouldn't convey the same power.

  • @andreaneilcmc - couldn't agree more, Richard Thompson's guitar is a vital part of this, as it is in Nick Drake's "Time has told me"

  • @andreaneilcmc I almost agree - but think Richard Thompson actually plays too much in this version. I am a fan of his but I could do with about half as much lead playing in here. One of the loveliest "folk/rock" songs ever, even so!

  • @andreaneilcmc your so right about that!

  • @andreaneilcmc I so agree. The subtle, but powerful, instrumentals elevate this version to level above the beauty of the lyrics and Sandy Denny's soulful vocals. DJB.

  • I discoverd Fairport early on when I was given a copy of Leige and Lief to listen to and privileged to hear Sandy live in a park in Harlow way back in 1974. There will never be another Sandy. Just awesome may she rest in peace.

  • i can see where the Allman Brothers Band got some of their idea's from!

  • A true woman and an angel sent to caress our ears.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful folk music which has echoes of denny.

  • PURE.

  • En dan te bedenken dat ik een album kocht van Fairport Convention omdat 'wij' hippe oudere jaars erover hoorden praten..... zo in de blind. Met succes Duzzz. Back in 1973

  • Beautiful Sandy

  • First hearing of her in the late 6o's, I once had every abum of Sandy Denny's .. including even one she made with a very early group called "The Bunch". I saw Fairport Convention (and Sandy Denny) in Convocation Hall at the University of Toronto in '74 (I think). It was totally sold out, and this was amazing, for, in spite of their excellence, they were not well known!

  • just love this band. and what a voice. another top British band.

  • One of the GREATEST songs ever by the GREATEST female folk singer....but she was much more...only a matter of time before they make a movie of her troubled life

  • Time isn't real, but it happens at 18.5 MPS here on Earth... I can not only show you where it goes, but more importantly, where it comes from. Google Michael Galileo, or friend me on FB.

  • My friend played this touching song for me a few weeks ago - so moving - he said she and Eva Cassidy were gone too young - way too soon" and we wrote a song for them and all who die "Way too Soon"

  • wonderful, thanks.

  • stunning

  • At the time I posted this comment this video had 666,411 views and 1,666 likes... COINCIDENCE? I think... so...

  • this is not joni mitchell it is sandy denny - wrong country different drugs. this was played at a funeral of a dear friend last year too - funny that... ha ha ha. one of the most wonderful songs ever written or recorded and richard t is just incredible on it. a tearjerker every time, literally every time. brilliant.

  • Who knows where the time goes???????????????????

  • @MsPattercake I can show you.. Google Michael Galileo, or find me on FB. And it goes at 18.5 miles per second...

  • @MITCHWILD Wow Mitch - this seems so sad and knowing that she died at such a young age it makes it even sadder. I get why you like this so much. It's really touching. ♥

  • led zeppelin know why they choose sandy denny to be guest vocal for on of their song

  • God that is beautiful.

  • @modelleg Oh yes.

  • No one comes close to Sandy singing this.

  • @homerjsinnott I don't think I've ever heard Joni sing this, but I bet you she'd knock it out of the park. Especially the very young Joni Mitchell voice. Sandy really is beautiful, though. Peace, from Michigan.

  • I agree this is one of the most stunning vocal performances I have ever heard, also backing is beautifully understated.

  • she died of alcoholism, the reason and cause of the fall

  • this song has everything, I am glad I am now old enough to not let my taste be influenced by peer pressure and can now enjoy this. Not that I was ever into pop music, but I missed out on the like of the teadrop explodes and the bunnymen cuz they where look on as a bit studenty. Saying that in the 80's while eveyone else in the country was listening to mat bianco, we were on the Genesis floyd axis, like all the other scallies in l'pool we thru in John Martyn and Gil scott Herron (RIP) santana Etc

  • @yakacm ..and good on yer for yer tastes....

  • vocal at 2: 25 to 2:30

  • vocal at 2:30

  • Stunning, sensitive and sensational guitar playing from Richard Thompson on this classic track. Someone commented at the time that the finest session musicians in the world couldn't have backed up Ms Denny any better than the Fairport guys did on that occasion.

  • I love this song -ITS GREAT!!!

  • Love Sandy & the Fairports! In fact my parents met SANDY in 1975 in EDINBURGH when she was touring with the band! They got SANDY to sign my Medical card (I was only a couple of months old) Of course i still have it today & will always Treasure it!! She Signed it WHISPERED WITH LOVE......(my name) In fact my Dad says he fell in love with my Mum because she looked like Sandy in early 1970's! LOL!! SHE DID!!

  • @67psych That is a sweet story about your parents. :)

  • this is unequivocally the most beautiful song of all time....

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful folk music which has echoes of denny and drake

  • 18 people have NO taste -or ears I guess

  • 18 people have NO taste -or ears apparantely

  • 26 Sandy Denny The young classically trained pianist Denny threw herself into the London folk scene while working as a nurse at Brompton Hospital. She went on to write songs immersed in imagery that would have graced a Pre-Raphaelite painting, delivered in a voice as clear as a mountain lake.

  • It may just be me but this is not totally like the vibe on some of the tracks on the Beatles Abbey Road and this was released before that album. Who were the real innovators?

  • @tonbridgeman Just to clarify I should have said " ...totally unlike the vibe..."

  • and what did the beatles listen to know all ? .. Lennon was into Beefheart and stuff like this and Zappa,, The Beatles were human , they used the toilet and so on,,, twat !!

  • I - SO - LOVED this song by Judy Collins- I had NO idea this was originally by Sandy Denny - thank you for educating me. God Bless Sandy DeNny - what a WONDERFUL, PURE VOICE... a true "GENERATION LOST" BUT GLAD I WAS (SORTA) THERE!!!!

  • @kathyblood judy Sings this beautifully too -))

  • I've lisented to about 5 tracks of Sandy from my play list so far

  • Got the v.late 1960s & early 1970s albums... but vinyl LPs are mainly consigned to the loft here! I respect your "top comments". By 100yds, I also dwell in Sutton, not Croydon.... but seek no crematorium placement? I now learn that Sandy Denny has "passed on". It was a struggle to get my own wife out of The Royal Marsden Hospital... but I did laugh to discover her ward doctor to be one taught Biology by me @ school. Maybe we all do some good things?

The validity of the track is unquestionable!

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful contemporary classical and folk music which has echoes of denny

  • Sandy was a truly extraordinary singer. Still feeling the loss of her passing...

  • the god damn truth this song is.

  • Anyone know the source of this version? 7digital and emusic have another and I don't want it: it's not as good.

  • @lorrimang

This version is from the Fairport Convention album "Unhalfbricking".

  • @Elfman101 wonderful. Thanks for that.

  • @lorrimang Sandy Denny wrote this when she was with Fairport Convention. Great sixties band. She died as the result of a fall in 1978 As far who posted this song; I wouldn't know. Enjoy. Beth

  • this is a cracking song i am very fond of this

  • Sandy is singing via You Tube archive today. This lovely woman is being

blessed by the angels. Her voice is still very much up there in the sky somewhere. She possessed no ego, sang at a time when society was becoming materialistic and cynical. She was so genuine, that it almost even today (as I post this comment), makes me cry. I feel sorry for all music lovers who missed out on such a lovely spirit as Sandy Denny. She is a the sparkling jewel in a wondrous sky.

  • maybe my all time fave song

  • One of the wonderful qualities that our lovely Sandy possessed is that despite her

amazing talent, she appeared to be devoid of an ego. When singing, she was in fact giving up her songs...it is that lilting feel to her wonderful voice that at once captured the listeners, but no ego.......she shares the stars with us still. Beautiful woman. We shall be listening to you for many years my love how could we ever

    forget you.

  • this is music i would like to hug .

  • What I love so much about this album version is how Richard's guitar fills just perfectly interplay with Sandy's heartbreakingly beautiful vocals.

  • A timeless song from somebody who didn't have nearly enough. Curse the loss of the many in our lives who pass too soon. We do miss you!

  • timeless rhapsody!

  • The sweetest song there has ever been,.......IMO.

  • wonderful voice...

  • Nostalgia! Simplesmente mágico.

  • Judy has a very good version of this song, in her album Colors of the Day

  • eddiethebadger.... you just made a grown man cry. good luck to you!

  • LIVE & LET LIVE

  • live & let live

  • Thanks for this classic song

  • Best british singer ever!

  • its a pretty special song alright! sandy was just amazing!!!!

  • A monumnetal performance by Sandy Denny, also I love the endlessly inventive guitar work as well. I have tried to play like this and it ain't easy.

  • My eternal heroine, My lady,

  • she died in 1978 what a loss to us all.

  • If Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson never done anything but this they would have been justified.

  • great music, great voice great song.

  • Imagine if you can, Maddy Prior, June Tabor and Good Old Sandy singing together, that would be heaven. RIP Sandy, you are very much missed

  • Why is it you never hear folk music on the radio, ever..!? is it because it dosen't fit with somebody's idea of what people (should) listen to? or it isn't commercial enough, or what. It beats the shit out of Simon Cowells' crap anyday!

  • @occipitalobe666 Cowell = 666

  • I was going through my old guitar magazines and this song/album was recommended. I'm glad I check this out. I love this kind of music.

  • This song was played at my brother's funeral when me and his three sons carried his coffin into sutton crematorium. Where does the time go indeed......

  • @BillMinworth - have just made contact of late of some very good friends, and I was moved to listen to this, then I read your words. I hope your brother is listening, with a big smile on his face, and feels like a few jigs, as this music should put him in the mood for a good music Sunday. Both you and he are in my thoughts today, and I shall raise my Sunday pint in yours and his name. Who knows where the time goes.......................
