This is a great concept for a small business owner, but this particular company has terrible customer service. My father has been using them for 10 months now, and didn't have any problems until recently. He had a transaction that did not get deposited, even though it met all of the criteria to be deposited within the normal amount of time. The company has been giving him the "run-around" for a couple of weeks. You can get this same type of service through your own bank with better support.
This video is fine if all you care about are cool gadgets. Square is not a legitimate merchant service!!! We used them for about 6 months and it was LIVING HELL. There in NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!! NOT EVEN A PHONE NUMBER ON THEIR WEBSITE. Dozens of emails have been ignored and now they are attempting to debit our checking account for substantial monies based on a fraudulent chargeback from a customer that signed the iPad FIVE MONTHS PRIOR. SquareUP should be investigated by the attorney generals
@cousindupuis That's why you have the customer sign, take a picture of the customer and ask for a copy of their ID. You should file charges against the customer, also, you should file a claim with Square to proof the transaction happened.
@pxrking Right click on the "start" button, left click "properties", left click the "taskbar" tab, In the taskbar buttons pull down select "Combine whentaskbar is full" click "ok"
Great for very small business I think. My girl friend uses the square selling women's accessories.
I'd have to say I prefer my Verifone though since my ticket items are about $100+ and monthly volume is much higher and $10,000 which is still considered small but I get to use my own processor and it's way cheaper for slightly for slightly higher volume. Square reminds me of mobile paypal that's can be great for small ticket items and volume.
@Rolline4me all small businesses has to start from somewhere, some are lucky enough to get sales and some are just barely getting the hang of merchant. Good to hear about your experience with verifone, i might just move up to that once i make enough money on high ticket items etc...
2 notices = legit sale. If funds transferred do not jibe with one email, then the jokes on the other email/party (even if police have to go thru email servers to verify the dispute.)
This way, the customer gives up currency, and the store gets a sale and may get a name. Is that what the flow looks like to actual users?
@ACTSRevolution im confused with your post - can you expain what you mean? i may be interested in square and am researching the pros and cons of it. thanks in advance.
Now, the customer somehow gets your store info and selects the item they are buying, then swipes their card thru their square so a payment request goes to Square who knows the store's email and bank, so the card co. tells the customer's bank to xfer funds to the store's bank and after this arbitration is successful, then Square sends a receipt to the customer and a confirmation to the cashier so both can be assured of customer satisfaction. Zat right?
This may be GREAT for retailers, but I spent less than $40 today in ONE transaction with a merchant who uses this thing, and due to a system "glitch", my bank account has been reduced by TWO charges equal to nearly $300. How's THAT for good business? I'm thinking FEDERAL CHARGES may be in store for the glorious "square up" company.
Been using Square with iPad for a couple of months with one of our businesses. We also use First Data Merchant Services with another business. Square HOLDS your money for up to 30 days!!!! When they do transfer YOUR money they take their discount out of the deposit instead of hitting your bank for their charges at the end of the month like EVERY OTHER MERCHANT SERVICE. Can you imagine the bank they are making on YOUR money while you wait for it?? Also, no tech support and a cumbersome website.
@callmaniac2 im possibly going to get square but you said they hold the funds up to 30 days, but the video says they transfer funds to your bank acct within 2 days. can you clarify?
@multiz007 30 days if you do more than $1,000 a week, you can also get a credit limit increase if you want to, if your business or your individual sales is approved by square.
Firstly the Verifone accusations is pure FUD. Do some research on it. Secondly, this is the greatest device/idea since the paper clip. It's perfect for the small business, I've been using for close to a year and it's been great. If you need to up your limit you can contact them and they'll up it. Payment is fast and the records are easy to access. Best part is you can accept American Express for the same rate.
@stevescissors Then I'm going to guess you're not using a card anymore are you? Key is to keep a very close eye on your accounts because ANYONE can get your card info. Good luck.
@UpChuckLiberals I hardly use my card, i pay cash most of the time. Beware of Square, im reading a lot of negative comments lately. I've heard comments made about putting the number in manually if a strip on the card doesn't work. I've read Square charges more for that option. They don't do that in stores. I like the whole idea, but dont' want to get ripped off by Square.
Thanks for posting... the new fee is 2.75% only... no 15 cents per transaction charge... but can anybody explain their policy of holding over $1000 per month charges for 30 days... what's up with that?...
@dnafreq I have a regular Merchant Card Service and Square is holding the extra funds to prevent fraud. Say someone was depositing large amounts from stolen credit cards; they would potentially have tens of thousands in their account in no time. They could up and run with the money. By placing the 30 day hold, it gives the card holder time to report the misuse. Since the money's still in the Square account, it can be returned..
8 months? why not just get an android? Works better, and more choices & better hardware. They never had the issue with the metal band. Then again they never had the issue of dropping calls because of the way the phone is made like iphones either. I guess some people prefer looks over usability and usefulness
@be4u8me ... Swiping my clients card 20 times embarrassing myself, making them feel uneasy was not funny :P The new reader is soo nice! (Although my first slim reader did die, but Square got me a new one in the mail in 1 Buisness day!)
How fast does the money go into your bank account? i just read one guy's review and he said the money came a little at a time, ie if you rec'd $100 you'd get a few bucks one day, a few bucks later and the balance even later in the month. Is that true?
@timin770 I usually get my money within 48 hours. As long as its less than $1000. If its over $1000 they hold onto it for 30 days, but if you continually make more than $1000 in a month, they say they will raise that limit before they will hold the money.
Convenient.

You just gave these people 18 cents for free!
No wonder we have big corp taking advantage of people. Doing these kinds of irrational things.

@alexunlv
it's actually only 3 cents now from the 2.75%. they dropped the 15cents fee (which only applies to the card free method that charges 3.5%)
